Border crossing @ International Falls....

Any recommendations on best time of day to hit the crossing in June? I hear it can back up a couple hours during the heavy times of tourist season. I'd like to avoid a long delay if possible, but have never driven across the border before.

Avoid weekends if you can, and avoid the lunch hour if at all possible. Most arrive around the lunch hour, meaning they left their original destination early that morning. So, avoid noon on Saturday :).

Check wait times too. If you are running in to a massive wait at international falls, Baudette is a little over an hour away.

Between 9 & 11 AM or 6 & 8 PM on weekdays.

We usually hit early evening so we had daylight to get to Dryden or Sioux Lookout.

Don't want to be driving in that wilderness at night, I saw what a moose did to a semi once when we were up there, it wasn't pretty.

I've crossed that part about 12 times in my life in June.

Get there around 4 in the morning. Depending on how far north you are going (we go north of Red Lake) you want to hit I believe it's 502 south into Dryden, during the light. We hit it at night once and we saw about 45 moose. It's 2 hours of driving around curves, right in the middle of the woods. No places to stop, only pulp check stops, and adding in the moose makes it about the most stressful 2 hour drive you'll ever make. If you're driving through that, the border will be the least of your problems.

This is very true about the most stress filled two hours of driving. We don't/won't drive this in the dark again in June. Baudette isn't bad, we go through north on Sunday early afternoons. Really no traffic, but getting behind those pulling fishing boats, you might as well plan on an hour to wait.

We are traveling from Duluth to Sioux Narrows (just south of Kenora) via I. Falls. We will be leaving Duluth pretty early in the morning, try to hit the border before 8 a.m. Thanks for the tips!

Sioux Narrows is a cool little spot torbee. We always load up with beer there before heading further north to Wabaskang. We cross early in the morning and typically there is not a terrible line. If you haven't been before, know the restrictions as well as possible. A 30 box is not a case of beer. Do you have your passports? If you are bringing a minor without both parents do you have a letter stamped by a notery? What fruit/vegetables are on the banned list? I had really long hair and a long beard way back when...they had a good time searching our boat and truck with a fine toothed comb. Good luck.

The Moose populations in NW Ontario south of Red Lake have dramatically decreased over the last 10-15 years. Deer carry a parasite that is harmless to them but fatal to moose. There has been less snow over the years and this has allowed the deer to move north into traditional moose territory. So the night driving isn't nearly as dangerous as it used to be. We usually cross the border around midnight and drive though the night to get to Red Lake in time to get picked up in the morning.
