Boston Celtics President Brad Stevens was 100% correct on Beth Goetz. "They better name her the Full Time AD. She's as good as it gets."

Beth was decisive and made the right decision when she got rid of Brian Ferentz.

She was decisive and made the right decision today to end the Fran McCaffery era.

She had NIL up and running on Day 1 when she was the Athletic Director at Ball State. Unlike Gara Barta, she's working with the SWARM CEO to make Iowa competitive in the NIL era.

This was the June 2023 story from the Gazette, where Beth got Brad Stevens' endorsement:

If she pulls this off, she should have a statue outside Carver, next to mine! ;)

FTR i have little confidence in her making the right hire here.
Once announced i will go on record as thumbs up or down.

I like the connection Goetz and Stephens.

She probably asked Stephens after she got the job about what he though of Fran's system and that is when the No Contract extension hardball started.

Now she can get honest evaluation of coaching prospects.

Since money is part of the issue, I don't see how paying a $6 million buyout to WVU makes sense when Iowa is struggling to come up with NIL.

I hope she makes the right choice because like you said it's gonna cost almost $10M to buy out Fran and Devries (if he's the choice).

And the new coach will demand $3M (or more) per year, 5-7 years and a LARGE BUYOUT.

Lots to like with both DeVries and McCollum.

One of the things I like about DeVries would be the optics of poaching a head coach from another P4 school. Makes Iowa seem like the desirable job that it can be. (Not that I’d base the decision on this, but it is a positive aspect.)

Also, NIL comes from fans; the buyout would be paid by the university. So not necessarily a direct impact on NIL if Iowa pays the buyout for DeVries (unless boosters are chipping in to pay those costs).

Thanks for posting - that is definitely very high praise…maybe she could sway Brad back to college coaching (his first love)….in Iowa City. 😉

Beth’s first call was to Stevens to see if he was interested in coming back to coach the college game. He wasn’t. But I liked that she was thinking big and contacted him.

They say that every good AD has a list of replacement coaches "in their back pocket." Beth has been preparing for this for a while. Makes you wonder what Kirk Ferentz & Tom Brands are thinking....

As long as they keep butts in the seats, keep winning, and keep the $ coming in, they will be fine.

IF Beth gets her man, that should create some momentum for ticket sales, NIL donations, and Carver renovation donations.

Key word: should.
This is the key point. If we make the right hire, and get a guy who can win games and excite the fan base, we should have more than enough money to compete. Paying what it takes to get that guy will absolutely be worth it.

In other words, hire the guy you want. Don’t get distracted by the price tag. Think long-term.

I have a tough time hearing folks say Iowa is not a top ten destination in just the Big Ten for coaches.

Look at the women side. Proof that with the right combination, that arena could be filled to the gills again with fans & donors who would love to pour in money for a winning cause.

I believe Beth will make the correct decisions in this search & Iowa will be competing soon for Big Ten titles in basketball.

Is Devries' resume any better than McCollum's?

McCollum has won wherever he's been.

Even given this, I am guessing Devries is Beth's #1 choice.

I think DeVries is more proven. A safer choice.

McCollum might have more upside. But he’s a risk.

Perhaps the key is which has a greater ability to build relationships with donors and engage the fan base.

What are the prices of tickets for men’s and women’s games?

Iowa needs to be proactive in finding ways to get the local community going to games again. Let’s get Carver rocking again. When I went to games back in the late eighties and early nineties, Carver was loud, really loud.
