Boston Celtics President Brad Stevens on Beth Goetz: "They better name her the Full Time AD. She's as good as it gets."

She made one obvious decision. Good for her, but one decision does not make an AD.

I want an AD with a great track record and lots of experience.

Simple choice, hire Gene Taylor from K-State. The guy understands championship level football from his NDSU days. Iowa ties. AD of the year last year.

First order of business is hiring Chris Klieman. That guy can coach. Ran a dynasty at NDSU, beat a top 15 Iowa team. Has K-State in the top 25. Plays a physical style of football, believes in defense, and is a winner. Iowa guy to boot.

It's so obvious at this point that's the right move.
Whoa. BG did not just fire a janitor. She went head-on against the biggest, most powerful, best known coach in her department and the longest-tenured one in the nation and won, or at least it seems now.

I would be very surprised if she turns out to be better than Gary Barta.
My cat would be better than Barta because he would not have given Kirk or Fran insane extensions when nobody was going to hire them away at their age.

Barta sucked as a AD. Those lawsuits crippled the university.

I don't know if the decision she made today is a good one... its about the same as the 25 pts per game decision.

I'm not a fan of firing people and replacing them with somebody else for the sake of firing people and replacing them with somebody else.
I prefer patience and faith over condemnation and over-reaction.

remember this...
whoever the next OC is... the same people will hate him the same as the one they hate now.. and the one they hated before him... and the one before him.

guarantee it
Wrong x 1000. The next OC will have better offensive stats in year 1 than Bumbling Brian has had the last 2 seasons.......guarantee it. Doesn't even matter who it is, since it's impossible to be any worse!

I'd rather the University did an open and complete search and identify the best candidate rather than hire the one in-house because she made an obvious and popular decision.
BG is in line for the job not because of her recent move. But the recent move is indicative of why she's in line for the job.

Nearly all Hawk fans applaud Beth's actions today.

But I've read on here that Goetz's wife does not like living in Iowa City.

No idea if this is true or not, but if it is... that's a problem. No?
Probably true and it’s a problem at least a couple years out. She’s gonna have to put in at least two years of good work as AD to become desirable enough to get stolen away. I’ll take that deal all day long.

I'd rather the University did an open and complete search and identify the best candidate rather than hire the one in-house because she made an obvious and popular decision.
Lol, your bad takes always entertain.

Here is everything Goetz told the local media on Tuesday.

ON THE OPENING STATEMENT

“I think the statement speaks for itself. I’ve had conversations with President Wilson, but we thought it was important to provide clarity and that’s what was in the statement yesterday.”

WHAT WAS THE TIMELINE OF THE DECISION

“I really appreciate the question and the desire to know more details, but as you heard Coach Ferentz say, the content, specifics, are private conversations and we’re going to keep it that way. What I will say is that everyone joins me, all Hawkeyes, and in showing their appreciation to Brian [Ferentz] with his commitment and passion, and what he has done as a student-athlete and coach of this program. We’ve got a head coach who is incredibly successful, a hall-of-fame head coach, with a steady hand who is going to be focused on leading this program just like Brian is and the rest of the staff toward a successful end of the season. I know our fans are going to continue to support them in a positive way.”

CAN YOU COMMENT ON WHETHER THERE WAS OUTSIDE PRESSURE?

“I think anytime that you’re in these situations, you tune out what is around. It’s out job to evaluate all the information you have to make the best decision you can at the time for both the short and long term of the program and of the institution, and then asses what you go with.”

DO YOU FEEL LIKE THE TIMING SETS YOU UP TO MAKE A MORE PRODUCTIVE HIRE IN THE COMING MONTHS AS OPPOSED TO LATER?

“The only consideration is what we think is in the best interest short term. As you heard coach mention, those decisions are to be made at the appropriate times, and he’ll go forward with what he thinks best.”

HOW MUCH SAY WILL YOU HAVE IN THE NEXT DECISION?

“As is the case in all of our sports and any of our coaches, we empower our head coaches to make decisions that they believe are best, and of course, our administrators are involved with how we engage with them and exchange ideas, but those are decisions we will lead to the head coach.”

DID YOU TALK TO ANY OF THE FOOTBALL PLAYERS ABOUT THE DECISION OR LET THE COACHING STAFF HANDLE THAT?

“My door is always open for any student-athlete, but coach knows best about how to handle the team, and those conversations will be held with the players.”

HOW DIFFICULT WAS THIS DECISION, KNOWING THAT THIS IS KIRK FERENTZ’S SON WHO IS BEING LET GO?

“I think anytime anybody is involved in any decision, it’s difficult. Especially those who mean a lot to our university and institution, and that’s always a piece of the puzzle. At the end of the day, you make the best decision and what you think the best interest is to the program.”

IS THERE ANY CONCERN AFTER 2023 THAT YOU WILL LOSE KIRK FERENTZ?

“The concern anytime you have to replace a hall of fame coach in any sport is real. We have more than our fair share at Iowa and you want to keep them here as long as you can so they can continue to lead our great programs here at Iowa.”

HOW BIG OF A DISTRACTION WERE THE CONTRACT AMENDMENTS?

“Looking back at what contributed to this point is not something I really want to get into it. What you do is look at what’s right in front of you and you take that information, what you can navigate, and you make the best decision that you can.”

DID THE DECISION COME DOWN TO THE RESULTS AGAINST MINNESOTA? COULD IT HAVE CHANGED IF IT WAS A WIN AGAINST MINNESOTA OR A LOSS AT WISCONSIN?

“Once again, I appreciate the question, the statement speaks for itself and that’s all we’re going to share about how we landed where we did.”

SHOULD WE LOOK INTO THE FACT THERE WAS NOT A STATEMENT FROM KIRK OR BRIAN ATTACHED TO THE RELEASE ON MONDAY?

“I wouldn’t. It’s a statement from me, and we heard Coach Ferentz speak today. At the end of the day, both Kirk Ferentz and Brian Ferentz, I am 100 percent confident just like they always have, but their focus is on the 120 guys in the locker room. That’s been unwavering over time and that’s been unwavering from when I’ve watched week in and week out. That’s what they’re thinking about right now.”

HAVE YOU BEEN GIVING ANY ASSURANCES THAT THIS IS THE TYPE OF RESPONSIBILITY YOU WILL HAVE BEYOND THE INTERIM LABEL?

“I’m sure there is a lot about the circumstance that is unique, and I’m doing only the job that she has asked me to do in serving this interim role.”

GIVEN THE INTERIM TAG, DID THAT MAKE THE DECISION HARDER FOR YOU TO PULL THE TRIGGER WITH THE FIRING?

“At the end of the day, in any role in which we have a chance to serve any of these young men and any of these coaches in any institutions we have an opportunity to work at, you do the best the can with where you are, and you do that in the role that has been provided to you.”
