I will apologize in advance if this has been discussed and I missed it, but what is Brandon Hutton's status? Is he injured? I know at one time there was discussion that he might redshirt, but I thought Fran indicated that there were no plans to redshirt anyone else but Moss.

barring injuries, Fran is now going to redshirt Hutton too. Makes sense considering the depth we have at the wing this year. I think Hutton is a great candidate as he will need to improve his perimeter skills to see meaningful minutes at Iowa and seems like a classic case of a guy that will mean a lot more to us down the road than he will right now. I believe he played a lot in the post in HS, he is likely a 3 for us and with Uthoff leaving and Jok a senior next year, he will have the opportunity to earn meaningful minutes beginning next year.

Not to dog on Hutton, but our biggest concern would be if we can keep Moss from transferring.

I am worried about Moss sticking around. He has lot of talent, just got here late.

Why, the coach is doing the right thing with him. He is making an investment this year that will pay dividends down the road.
Really
Hope both these guys can build great chemistry with the team and embrace the opportunity red shirting give them to hit the floor running next year. Really like the athleticism both bring to the table and think they could be great Hawkeyes. I think adding those two to the mix next season with the guys we will have coming back and the recruiting class we have would make for a very good run yet again.

We will miss our experience at point but I like what's coming next year too. I do want to add what Uthoff brings can't be measured in just statistics. He played one of the best all around games yesterday. I knew he was good but wow

Why would Hutton and Moss leave? They need to buy into the process. These coaches have proven they can develop these players to be the best they can be by the time they enter the final year of college ball. If your ceiling is high, these coaches can take you there. Our last two draft pics, Marble and White, show that. Could you have imagined Olaseni on this year's team? It would have been amazing. Now multiply that by two if Moss and Hutton stick around and develop. We have some highly regarded recruits coming in a couple years.

I agree I'm super excited about both of these guys but red shirting them is the thing to do even if you risk pissing them off and having them transfer. i hope this doesn't happen bc they both seem like they could be good players and they can look at Ellingson to show that you can redshirt and still succeed. In addition, often times during breaks in play Hutton is the first guy out there fist bumping guys or whatever. His personality also kind of strikes me as someone who would work his butt off in a redshirt season to prove he was overlooked. Hopefully it works out and both guys stay.

Yep, not worried either will leave, why would they? They see along with us the future of iowa bb is very bright.

I'm guessing the redshirt discussion with both Moss and Hutton had been ongoing.

I've never played big-time college basketball, but I'm going to assume that if the team is doing well and winning redshirting for these kids is more palatable. If the team sucks and is losing, naturally the thought process of "we might be winning if I was given a chance" comes into play, creating a natural unrest and angst that might indeed compel a kid to transfer to somewhere they will feel "appreciated."

While I don't expect Iowa basketball to set the world on fire this season, I think they have a shot to be pretty competitive. Regardless, if Moss and/or Hutton choose to leave, it will probably be due to a perceived lack of playing time in their future at Iowa, and not because they were asked to redshirt this year. When Trey Dickerson was riding the pine before he peaced out, I'll assume that if he had any hope of significant playing time down the road, he probably would have stayed. Who knows.

I really think Hutton has a chance to be a real stud provided he sticks around. Great athleticism and that junk yard dog attitude. I think he if embraces this time to improve his offensive game and learn the system he could be special. Really hope both these guys do stick it out and no reason to believe they won't other than the national trend of kids jumping ship when they don't get the minutes they want.

Isaiah Moss will not transfer. The coaches have done a wonderful job of discussing the redshirt with him and his family and everyone understands that the redshirt is in the best long-term interest of Isaiah.

No offense, but I'm just curious how you're so certain. Are you a family friend? I apologize if you're already an established "insider" on these boards.

We are so very lucky to have the depth to redshirt these guys! The future of Iowa basketball looks fantastic.

Now, if either does decide to transfer that's up to them. But they are getting the best possible opportunity to learn a year and come in stronger than ever in 2016/17.

Colorado Red-Shirted George King by mutual agreement last year. He sat out what would be his Sophmore year.

This year he has scored more points in his first 2 games than he did all of his first year.

He looks like a completely different player. Stronger, quicker, and probably averaging @17 points per game.

He has 2 years left after this year now. And could be a future star.

He was just one of several similar players before the Red-Shirt.

Moss could use a redshirt year regardless of where he's at developmentally to get accustomed to the academic side of things. He had trouble being eligible at Lincoln way, and transferring to a Chicago public school wasn't really an educational test

Doesn't make any sense to leave really. Both will play next year for sure. Transfer and you are sitting another year.

OK, one last time, Fran has stated, numerous times, that he doesn't redshirt a player unless the player is fully on board with it. Basically, he lays it out for the player and the player agrees and redshirts, or doesn't agree and doesn't redshirt.

If either are redshirting, it's because they agreed to do so.

This. Hutton will burst on the scene next year, same with Moss. Spend the entire year focusing on specific parts of their games. Rather than a few garbage minutes in a few games this year. That will do wonders for their games.

Hutton sounds like he has the defensive side down. Refine that this season, and develop a better shot, and we will have a player. A solid year to learn at the BCS level, develop under our coaches &systems, and strength & conditioning programs. Add significant minutes to earn playing time in games and we will be quite happy as Hawkeye fans when these 2 hit the floor...and we get them for 4 valuable years, instead of 3!

Could they add something this season?? Possibly. But nothing too significant, and it would only thin playing time all around. That wouldn't do anyone any good, nor make anyone happy.

I am actually more excited now about these 2, than I was at the beginning of the season. Coach must believe in these two, otherwise he wouldn't bother redshirting them. He wouldn't even think about it... Another year of maturity, building knowledge of the game and development like they have Never experienced will build two solid players. I like it.

And Fran has plenty of evidence to show these kids he can and will develop them. You're right, they will be fun to watch hit the floor for four years next season.

Other then Wagner, I think these may be the two guys with the biggest upsides. I thought Moss had the best offensive game on film of any of the guys coming in new. Hutton is said to be the most ready defensively.

When JU leaves there will be a lot of minutes at the 3 especially if Uhl proves he can defend the 5 this year. Moss getting to focus on grades and catching up on learning the system should allow him to be ready to contribute significantly for 4 years. Hutton seems to bring toughness and while he may not be as big a cog his r/s freshman year if he has another season to polish his O he's going to be key as an upperclassman. I see a bigger version of Sapp at the two.

If he leaves after being redshirted, he probably doesn't belong here anyway. Gotta have some maturity, perseverance & willingness to buy into the system. If he does, he'll be rewarded & could become one of Iowa's best players down the road.

I'm not really sure why some think they may leave, what would they gain by it? I'm sure they'll stay and be a big part of the future of hawk bb.

No on has mentioned that with these redshirts, we will have 6 players leaving after their senior year in 2020. That messes up the recruiting classes.

If Fran and Co. can sell a kid on a redshirt then its a great thing. If this years team ends up being successful then having 4 seniors who play significant minutes will likely be a reason. Against Marquette there was sort of an extreme example of good experienced players dominating high ranking 4*/5* inexperienced players. Isiah Moss and Brandon Hutton as 22/23 year old full grown men will have a great chance at being dominate Big 10 players as opposed to 18/19 year old freshman who may have contributed in a very limited role.. I am not concerned about players transferring. Many posters seem to fret about this, but there is no way to play every guy or make them all happy. If they transfer, so be it. I would guess the odds are one or two from this class might transfer eventually, but maybe not. If we have 6 seniors graduate in 2020 that would be a great thing with that much experience on the 2019-20 team. I bet things shake out a lot different - with future players redshirting, transfers, and or injuries. Redshirting 2 this year is probably an ideal scenario chemisty wise because most eligible players will get a shot a playing time this season and there will almost always be a a couple of seniors on the court at the same time to lead.

Without the redshirts there would be 5 players leaving in 2019. Unless you go with classes as 3, 3, 3, 4 you're always going to have unbalanced classes. Given the number of transfers these days, I'm not sure it's much to worry about. Bring in the best talent you can and hope most stick it out.
