***Breaking News; Senator Bob Menendez accused of taking bribes to help Qatari royalty family.***

Dems love to brag about how they always do the right thing when necessary and were especially critical of Republicans when George Santos was indicted.

But here we are now - Santos has been removed from the House while Chuck Schumer continues to shield the most corrupt member of the Senate from any sort of consequence. So far the only penalty Menendez has suffered is losing his position as Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. He wasn’t even removed from the committee, he just isn’t the chairman anymore.

The real indictment is the guy was censured by the ethics committee for basically the same type stuff in 2018. Got off on a mistrial in his court case....

Schumer still gave him the chairmanship of the Foreign Relations committee in 2021.

Menendez had a lot more pull as a Senator and Chairman of the committee then Santos ever did....

Time to put up or shut up with this clown.

That said, I think Schumer waits till the lame duck session after November...can't lose that vote.

Is the ethics committee investigating?

If not than that is a problem. If so than we have to allow them to finish the investigation.

But this trash should be removed from the senate once he gets his due process.
Some senators, such as Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), say there would need to be “due process,” like a criminal trial or Senate Ethics Committee investigation, before an expulsion vote. And the Ethics Committee has traditionally not conducted investigations of a senator during an ongoing criminal prosecution.

Didn't prevent the house from investigating Santos....

menendez should have been gone when his dealings with egypt came out.

And he should be executed for treason if he is convicted of working against US interests with the egyptians.

Sigh. One difference is that liberals are calling for him to be ousted. We want the scumbag gone. There weren't a lot of Republicans saying the same about Santos. He'll be gone soon enough.

That is a dumb ass rule or tradition.

This guy needs to be thrown out on his ass.

Santos was ousted. Before he went to trial.

Menendez was censured by the ethics committee back in 2018 and Schumer still gave him the Foreign Relations Committee chairmanship in 2021.

What do you consider "soon" Tom.

To be fair it sounds like only one Dem in the senate has called for his ouster. That would be fetterman. The rest have mostly just gone with talks about it being very serious and due process.

I can back the idea of due process but the senate needs to do it's own investigation and recommend his removal. Don't hide behind the courts and wait for them to convict him.

I know you're loving this both sides topic almost as Pine loves the school voucher threads, but I agree he shouldn't be on any committee. As soon as due process is done he will be out. Don't pretend that Republicans moved fast on Santos.

I'm mostly talking about board lefties. Politicians are going to politician until they can launch him.

Yeah but if they don't act it really does hurt in my mind the idea that the D's are any better than the R's in this respect.

I mean Trump is trying to become a dictator and the R's didn't act to stop him. Selling out our country like Menendez has done is just one step below that.

If they can't act then I have no reason to believe they would be any less complicit if some left wing wanna be dictator came to power.

If he were to resign or get expelled, the NJ Gov Phil Murphy would get to replace him. Interestingly, Tammy Murphy, his wife, is already running for the Senate seat. Would Murphy appoint his wife? Can’t see him appointing someone else. Interesting times.

I think there’s a chance the Senate Rs would not vote to expel Menendez. Just keep him there to mess things up.

Santos was removed less than a year into his term Tom. Before any trial.

If you can't see the hypocrisy here I don't know what to tell you.

When R's talked about "due process" in regards to Santos you were far less forgiving, to put it mildly.

No they would have to vote to expel him. Who voted for what is public record, they would have a hard time explaining that vote to anyone on either side.

As for the NJ governor I wasn't aware of that but forcing him to name a replacement does put him in a predicament. Naming his wife to the job looks corrupt AF. But anyone else he names would have a leg up on his wife in the primary.

I think you should measure from the time of criminal charges to removal for a rough comparison. I forgot how long it was for Santos but that time is closing in on Menendez.

Phil Murphy might be telling Schumer, “Please, don’t force me to name Menendez’s replacement.”

This is hardly "Breaking News"

Correct.

Why isn't the D controlled ethics committee investigating?

Why isn't Mitch McConnell demanding action? Chuck Grassley's aides haven't pointed him towards a camera so he can mumble out words expressing outrage and how the Senate he so dearly loves has been tainted. Ted Cruz hasn't made a trip to DC to express his indignation.

BoTH sIDES!!!!!

I guess it's up to Mitch to hold Menendez accountable....Chuck won't.

I think there is a bit of a predicament here, and I pointed it out when Tammy Murphy announced she was running for the seat. She was setting the stage for this very scenario.
There are plenty of retired Dems he could appoint to finish out the term. Pick someone like John Corzine who wouldn't need training, and has no interest in running for the seat.

Good idea. A placeholder would probably be the best bet.

Good on you for wanting Menendez gone. My point is that the leaders whom you have proudly declared will always do the right thing are not doing the right thing.

And yes, a lot of Republicans wanted Santos gone. That's why he's gone.

I've never said they always do the right thing - but they certainly are FAR better than Republicans - proven over the last 5 years, bigly.
