Before last year, I thought he would be one of the few OCs to coach from the sideline. His personality doesn't seem to fit being away from the action. I was wrong, or maybe I was right?

Ferentz plans to call plays from the sideline in 2018, a departure from how he spent most of his 2017 season in Year One as the offensive coordinator under his father, head coach Kirk Ferentz. He feels more comfortable closer to the action on game days.

“I’ve thought a lot about it,” Brian Ferentz told the Des Moines Register on Wednesday night’s Hawk Central radio show. “That’s why I went downstairs for the bowl game.”

Indeed, after 12 games calling plays from upstairs in the regular season, Ferentz went down to the frozen Yankee Stadium grass during Iowa’s 27-20 victory in the Dec. 27 Pinstripe Bowl against Boston College. It was an experiment he was happy he tried.

“What I’ve learned is I’m a better coach on the field,” Ferentz said. “I do better down there. I can have more of an impact down there.”

I like the move and agree that he brings more to the field when he is on it. I think he will be able to positively effect games more regularly this way. Polasek would be good up top, but I also think he should be on the field. Unless BF can juggle the play calling duties and coaching up the O line in particular where necessary. Could give the Hawks a 2 headed monster at OC, if you will.

I like listening to Brian a lot in interviews and on Podcasts. He really is the opposite of his dad that instead of giving blah answers he really breaks things down and and isn't afraid to lay it all out there. It was really interesting listening to him break down in game play checks at the line.

O'Keefe seems like a good fit for being upstairs, but he probably also wants to remain hands-on with his QBs.
I'd agree on KOK going upstairs. Last season I think it was important for him to be on the field, as he gave immediate feedback to Stanley every time he came off the field. I think he can communicate with him on the headphones this year when needed, but give Nate a little more rope this year.

I don’t think KOK goes in the booth, even when he was OC here he was always on the field.

Woods or polasek can head up and watch.. being a former oc polasek might be a good option, and it’s not like Iowa lacks coaches who know how to communicate and talk to the o-line on the sidelines

Whatever works for BF works for me. I personally think up in the box is better for getting a view of the field and seeing who is doing what, but I've also never tried being an OC from any location.

yep, he will stay on sideline to communicate with Stanley. They have GAs they can use up in the box. Times when you need to be talking to players face to face.
