I see Brian Ferentz is back

So how many first downs did they gain on 1st & 2nd downs? You really should consider all 1st down conversions, not just 3rd down conversions.
I dunno, keep in mind my crazy obsession with third downs, and also never forget 4th downs, however kirk {probably wisely} kicks or punts a lot, cause he has great kickers usually

I watch the games for one stat and one stat only and that's third down conversions. { this year KJ had me watching his yards too}
i am kind of ADD that way or obsessive compulsive. the first game iowa went 46% against illinois st which is kind of low for a 40 point blow out.

I recall a mich st game for the big ten champ game, iowa went like 3-12 third down conversions. I am kind of quirky that way. don't get me wrong,
I love the good iowa defense, but I like to see great production on offense. is lester better than BF? I'd say a little bit so far. too early to tell.

so do i enjoy games and wins? yes. I just do it differently than most people. they say reggae is a down beat on every third beat - I watch really closely -every third down. heavy down on third beat. I probably miss a lot of nice first down action because I am so concentarating on the third down.
Are there wins and losses in reggae?

3rd down conversion percentage is more important to you than wins and losses?

Haven't heard that one before

Not anywhere near enough. 3 and punt ruled the day. Iowa only won because Nebby self imploded. 5 first downs to 20.

Why was it not anywhere near enough first downs? Iowa won the game.

Self-imploded, huh? So Iowa deserves no credit for the win?

I was under the impression that with all the injuries and off the field drama, he was just trying to eek out a win by the skin of his teeth. like usual
This isn’t probably the most inciteful post OiT has ever posted here on HROT…..if talking about the UCLA game….Iowa was pretty beat up going in to that game…and came out beat to shit at QB in particular…..I think Kirk fully understood this and designed a game plan around this knowledge….it bit him in the but…….but in typical Kirk fashion, his TEAM rallied around the facts and won their last two games of the season…..

Iowa won because our coaches were smart enough to see that with a 4th string QB due to injuries our best chance was to play it conservatively and they new from history that Kaleb was likely to make a big play . They also knew from experience that Nebraska would likely make errors that would give us a chance to win. The players bought in and played hard to the final horn. It was the right call and worked out beautifully !

It was extremely lucky to beat Nebraska. There wasn’t much of an offensive gameplan. It was Kaleb Johnson and pray.

Watching Iowa play most of the game was very depressing.
It’s been painful for a number of years.

And yet, they are the swinging watch putting the opponents to sleep and when they wake up………………….. W. Not everyone can do it.

No turnovers….played the “field position game” expertly and used SPECIAL TEAMS to effectively maximum….enough to counter its offensive deficiencies….Does this coach/staff get NO CREDIT at all for great coaching of the entire TEAM….all 120 players? Lucky….perhaps…but what coach has won more games in this very manner than Kirk over the past 10 years or so? Maybe……just maybe, it ain’t “luck” as much as planning and preperation?

Why is this so hard for people to understand? The coaches should get praised effusively for building an excellent defense and special teams. They are always among the best in the country. Anybody who says otherwise has their heads up their ass.

The coaches (primarily Kirk because he has been as ineffective in building an offensive staff as he has been excellent in building the others) should be criticized just as sharply for the shitty offense. You can't blame Lester for having the worst passing game in all of college football because it's taken years to build that level of incompetence and he only just arrived.

It does take some luck to win very close games. When a game comes down to a strip sack in the final seconds to kick a 53 yard field goal in frigid conditions, you have to tip your hat again to the defense and special teams. At the same time, it took a good bit of luck for that sequence to play out the way it did to win the game. Unfortunately, as we have seen over the last several years, there ain't enough luck in the world to beat really good teams without a legitimate offense, regardless of how good your defense and special teams are.

Iowa got run off the field last Friday, offensively and to a lesser extent defensively. We just had Kaleb Johnson. What about the coaching staff when we lost to bottom feeder of the Big Ten teams in MSU and UCLA?!?

Good God man. Run off the field??? Get a grip. They gave up 10 ****ing points. There were 134 teams playing this past week. How many other team were held to 10 or fewer points? Nine.

The football coaches number 1 responsibility to himself, his employer and his team and its fans is to WIN football games. It makes no matter how, “just win, baby”…..
I had an old friend and FB coach once tell me that if the Devil made an offer to FB coaches that they would win every game they played “2-0” if they agreed to 1) never throw a forward pass and 2) to never run outside the tackles every play, that every FB coach this guy knew (and he coached FB for dam,n near 50 years) would agree to that deal. Every coach!

Incredible that anyone would think any differently

See Brian Ferentz and Kirk Ferentz to absolutely shatter whatever you wrote about above! It was not about winning with them or doing what’s best for the program either. If the number one thing was winning football games then Brian wouldn’t have been employed as offensive coordinator after 2021, and the very latest the Illinois game in 2022.
