We just get more and more divided by the day and it's only going to get worse. What would it take to bring us back together?

Things that I don't think would move the needle:
  • Assassination of our politicians up to and including the president. Whether it was Brandon or Drumpf, a large portion of the population would celebrate it. Long gone are the days of national unity after a JFK scenario.
  • Assassination of private individuals. Average joes, poor, rich, private sector, public sector, you name it. No single individual, profession, or class would make a difference.
  • Successful terrorist plot 9/11 style. Blame game would run rampant.
  • War involving US interests and troops but playing out abroad. Again, blame game.
  • Deep Impact / Armageddon style asteroid. We'd kill ourselves exacting revenge on the neighbor you hate for his political sign in an end game scenario.
Things I think would move the needle:
  • Mainland invasion by an opposing force. Like a real one. Then we might actually come together to save our collective skin.
That's all I've got. Basically, IMHO it has to be catastrophic and has to hit us where it hurts. What's on your list that gets us all back around the fire toasting marshmallows?

9/11 was the last real time I remember the United States coming together. It lasted for a "cup of coffee" and then we argued about who did what, when, where, why.

The sad part is I don't think anything can bring us together at this point. I think a wedge was divided between 2008-2020 (and even into present day). It started with the teeth gnashing about Obama by none other than Trump (birth certificate). 2016 we just poured fuel on the fire

In 2001 we already had a pretty consolidated media landscape and no big social media capabilities yet. I think if social media had been fully formed in 2001 you would have seen a contingent of people who processed 9/11/01 as a “chickens coming home to roost” moment.

It would never happen but something to the tune of all the billionaires giving away money to people who need it and eventually only being multimillionaires.
Not saying that some or most of these billionaires should have to do this but I think the gesture would really make a difference.
Too many people in this world struggle to get by which no doubt causes hate and divide.

I don't know that anything will unless we suspend 24/7 news coverage for about 6 months and shut down twitter to detox folks. I imagine another 9/11 wouldn't unite us, people would be too busy point fingers and cursing out the other team.

I think another 9/11 type plot that works and does damage would definitely bring people together not only because of the attack but because there are so many racist, straight up muslim hating people in this country. I am not sure trump would care that much as he wouldnt want to go after his butt buddies the Saudis

The 9/11 coming together unraveled when it was obvious the Bush cheney rumsfeld wolfowitz were lying and pressuring people to invent WMD evidence in Iraq. Scooter Libby who worked for Cheney outed CIA agent V Plame, reporters/media were getting hassled

A Russian invasion would bring out the Vichy sauce mères in the GOP.

I’ve debated this as an option. But it would have to be something big. Like a nuke in a very populated area that killed blues and reds. Maybe somewhere in Florida (sorry noles). We absolutely phucking hate each other right now. Somebody gets serious and we could unite our hatred in a common enemy. It sure ain’t gonna be a positive emotion that brings us together.

Look within. I don’t think an event, a politician, an activist, etc will bring us together. I’m far from perfect, but look at how most of these threads end up. Posters treating other posters like garbage because of political differences. A grassroots campaign seems like the best solution. I know this will fall on deaf ears, but maybe instead of resorting to mudslinging, we can treat each other with respect. Just a thought.

If everyone thought like you the world would be a lot better off.

i wish this were true. imo in real life people are still quite decent to each other as individuals regardless of politics. problem is they are easily mobilized into groups as well by various forces. once they are in groups whether virtual or irl unfortunately decency takes a hike.

A valiant goal, but completely against human nature unfortunately. We’re all self interested assholes if we’re honest with ourselves.

Well it’s how I live my life, or try to anyway. The party I was at Saturday had some Trump apparel and I would assume many Trump voters. I couldn’t be more different but ya know, we all got along just great. I know it’s idealistic, but living the way I try to live, I would have no one to blame but myself if things got fvcky.

An interesting post from an OP that has openly stated on multiple occasions that he's pretty much here to troll and yank people's chains. :)

With Leonard Hamilton stepping down at the end of the year…Fran to FSU would definitely bring a great amount of respect and joy to Iowa fans toward Nole’s fans. Not sure they would reciprocate though.

Bastards. Ah, screw it, nuke Tally.

No clue how passionate Nole fans are about hoops, but FSU hiring Franny would for damn sure NOT bring us together, unless they love poor defense, awful rebounding, and fan apathy.
