C.J. Fredrick...Question?

Here's where I think the difference lies. There is a ton of video of CJ. Watch that video and think back to what we saw with Ogles, who was a decent college player but not the great shooter reputed to be, or Ellingson who was obviously a below average Big Ten player.

CJ is obviously quicker and a better ball handler than either Ogles or Brady. CJ has an obviously quicker release than either Ogles or Brady. No one knows for sure how a kid will turn out but I think its a mistake to conflate those three players.
Well, you know why they are being compared.

I like your optimism but you got a lot of people who are skeptical because Fran always over hypes his guys and fear could be another oglesby/Ellingson player. Greatest practice 3 pt shooters (again listening to Fran praise them on this) but never lived up to hype as 3 pt specialist. However hearing mike gatens and not Fran saying that has me more encouraged.

Yeah that's basically just it.

I'm not writing him off, but how many recruits come into this league and average double digit scoring as a true freshman? Not many - At least not at Iowa. So I think the OP is being somewhat foolishly optimistic to think CJF can average double digits all year - unless there's some reason to think he is different than Oglesby/Ellingson. If he averages double-digits, then that could be potential B10 freshman of the year territory, IMO. Not sure I see that, but maybe could be a double digit scorer down the road.

Time will tell, though. Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised.

who are our other scorers? I’m just thinking back to last year? Connor, pemsl, etc..? Not saying they won’t be good, but Joe just seems to have that it factor. With all the players leaving/moving on. I don’t know whole lot about our new guys.

that’s why I think Joe will be a vital piece to this years team. I think as he does, so does Iowa. I think Garza, Nunge have huge years. But we need another wing scorer like moss was (I know he was Jekyll and Hyde at times).
I won’t pretend to have any idea who is going to score how much, and agree with most of what you are saying. I just have a feeling that the Hawks will have a lot of nights with different people scoring double digits. Bohannon, Kriener, Pemsl, Fredrick, Nunge, Evelyn, Garza, and Wieskamp are all guys who, based on what we have seen and what we have heard, seem like they could go for double digits on a given night. Of course Wieskamp will be the “go-to” guy, but I don’t think that he will necessarily have to take over that often

I thought if you red shirt your 1st year then you aren’t a “true” freshmen in year 2.

I think this year will be an interesting year compared to last year. First we will have a couple of "driving to the basket" point guards and we will have a shooting guard/guards that can drive to the basket. This will create more opportunity for easy baskets for the big's or open shots from the 3 pt line. Second, with Pemsl and Nunge, and our driving guards, I expect us to get more offensive rebounds...especially like Pemsl's hussle. Third, I think we will have a better defensive team. Our guards will defend better and if Patrick plays at the top of the zone on defense, it could create some defensive opportunities.

CJ will be better than most think. He plays with extreme confidence and has a total game. Those that compare him to other " white shooters from Iowa" very wrong on his game. CJ is much more than a shooter, he defends, decks it and makes those around him better. Would not surprise me at all if he averages 6-10 but if he was not so unselfish he could average double figs.

I know people are doubting CJ.

but why then did Moss leave?

I think this team is going to be sneaky good.

I think I read somewhere or heard an interview where Fran said he would of played a lot last year ...Hes just that good....

CJ's redshirt was mostly injury related. Now remember, he's a kind of in your face kid I'm told. So he took a charge from TC at full gallop. A bad concussion and multiple broken ribs later CJ was going to miss so many games that the redshirt made sense.

That would be like getting hit by a bull bison, without the horns of course. More balls than brains maybe but tough too.

Always the sentiment before the season starts. I can recall 2 years ago, that was going to be an excellent season too. I don’t want to drink massive quantities of koolaid, then go berserk when I find out Jim Jones made it.

Moss is already hurt at KS. Hamstring issues per Self.

Ouch. That's a bad break for him. Apparently this injury could impact his playing time even when he's healthy again, since he won't be able to get on the court and get acclimated.

“He needs to play this week, I mean at least be out there some … have three or four practices strung together so that way he can at least be confident going into Tuesday,” Self said. “If he can’t do that, his chances of playing very much aren’t very real even if he does feel better.”

Ya know.....this season two years ago really hurt....it has left a lasting negative mark on most of us. The reality is that year appears to be an anomaly....I say APPEARS because there is that fear that two years ago could happen again....and yet when you look at the history it is an anomaly. That said, I have the anxiety that it could happen again. MAYBE a couple more years of good results will reduce the anxiety.

I get your sentiment but in reality it can happen as there’s roster turnover and there are X factors like injuries & performance slumps. By the same token college sports has become so fluid in terms of transfers when combined with young players playing right away fortunes can turn quickly too.

Saw some of IU's exhibition on BTN .
They are young, athletic but seem undersized.
They have at least a dozen quick guys so they will run and press.

For those of you that have seen practice or even pickup games, it sounds like CJ has a similar skill set to Joe W. Both smart players that do everything well. I know Joe was ranked higher and is a couple of inches taller but is CJ a smaller, quicker version of Joe? So many unknown pieces on this team but I think it should be a fun year especially with the tough non conference slate. Good depth inside, athletic wings, bucket makers, and quick defenders on the perimeter. The only thing I worry about is experience and rebounding.

I would say he could be a shorter slightly less athletic version of Joe.

You are insane.

Believe it or not Legend, I'm kind of with you on this one. Not that Wieskamp and Luka couldn't average 34 to 38 points between them but because the minutes are going to be so spread out between 10/11 players that I don't think you're going to see extended minutes by anyone until later in the year.
By then players averages will be pretty established with probably one player averaging near 15 points a game and 4 or 5 others hovering at or just near double digits. That sounds typical of Fran's MO.

If Fran has an 11 man rotation that means we don’t have a top 8 players that are significantly better than the next 3 in.

Some might look at that is having great depth but typically it means you don’t have a strong enough top 5-8. Plus playing and finding time for 10-11 makes it difficult to develop chemistry and rhythm within a game. We’ve been down this path before and my hope is Fran works that 11 man rotation down to 8-9 by mid-December.

Agree — the 11 man rotation is a disaster waiting to happen. Identity the top 8-9 and give the bulk of the minutes to the best 5.

Some of these guys have yet to play in actual games for Iowa or have been sitting out but are being trumpeted for monster contributions. Looking at highlight videos and hearing about practices is a dangerous narrative escalator. Great ‘lock down defender’, ‘never misses’, etc.. We’ve seen that movie play out quite a few times. I prefer to wait and see how guys pan out when the competition gets real.

The comical part of all of this is there was an actual thread coming into last season downplaying Joe W (questioning if he should start) who was one of the best recruits we’ve had in a long time yet there’s always this koolaid fodder predicting excellence from unheralded guys. I don’t get it.

I agree with the highlighted part above....BUT I would say a lot of the commentary is what people have heard or seen...and others are dying for information. I think most get that those are practice or HS highlights that don't necessarily transfer to college, but it does create some hope....and for others unfair expectations.

I know everyone is just jones’ing for b-ball and is speculating. I’ve just seen too many times where the narrative escalates to a frenzied level that I feel like we have guys that should be starting at Duke from practice reports, highlights, (used to) prime time league, etc. and then the real games start and it’s filled with frustration over all of the inadequacies that are then apparent. I just want to see some real action first as there’s nothing like real games to tell the story.

I agree. Drives me nuts after the first few games vs nobody opponents when we play 10 or more. Plenty of times with his rotation like 2 years ago we are 8 minutes into the game and we have all bench or 1 starter and 4 bench and the other team has 3 or more starters in and running our subs off the floor.
