He did. After traveling along the baseline, he stayed in.I wish he'd let Joe play through a mistake once or twice.

Which experiment is over again? This. Give Ulis his minutes. The experiment is over.
They have one who starts...he just doesn't play the point enough.
Who is this Joe T everyone keeps mentioning? Maybe he only plays when I go to the kitchen to grab a cold one? I don't know, I've never seen him. Would be nice if Fran had given scholarships to other point guards besides JBo. If he had recruited any over the last four years Fran could finally play JBo at his natural shooting guard position for at least part of the game.
I wish this mythical Joe T existed because Iowa would really benefit from having an athletic point guard, especially come tourney time. Ah well, maybe Fran will find one after the season.
In all seriousness though, this is a final 4 roster that Fran is putting an unnecessary ceiling on.
Its pretty frustrating because Iowa will never have this many pieces again.
.......Im thinking Fran didn't want Michigan to be prepared for strictly man defense and thought he could buy some time against a garbage psu and give them something else to look at.
Almost cost him. Thats how bad that zone is.
Should have been a layup if it was a good pass. It wasn't …Also threw a pass to Patrick in transition that should have been a layup if he caught it clean.
Jordan Bohannon is 8th in the country in assist to turnover rate for the number 1 ranked offense in the country, yet this thread actually exists. Mind-blowing.LOL at this thread.

Iowa should have probably lost that game if psu was a decent opponent.
The last five minutes were bad as a team, PSU was frantic on defense. However, why just use the last five minutes to justify overall PG play? Joe did have some nice passes, and his one to Pat should have been a layup.Go watch the last 5 minutes of that game again and really pay attention to how inept Iowa is at the pg spot.
Then watch the last 5 of Michigan vs OSU.

The next highest ranked big ten player is Trice at 46th.

Further, right before the last five minutes, in that 4 minute span, we had some really nice PG minutes from Jbo.
We were tied, and Jbo had that really nice pass to Luka for the record.
The following play, a really nice pass from Jbo to JoeW, who got the ball stripped out of bounds.
Two plays later another really nice pass to Joe, who AGAIN got the ball stripped out of bounds. Ensuing play passed into Luke who hit a baby hook.
Then Jbo drove the lane, drew the defenders, and dished to Joe for the wide open 3, and he missed it. T on PSU on the rebound.
Next time down, PSU double teamed and he had that nice pass to Joe to Luka for the layup to go up by 8.
Finally, the next play, he came down and drilled that 3 to go up by 11.
Also, Jbo stopped that PSU fast break by getting back and making a great defensive stop.
PG is NOT the strength of this team, no matter who we have at that position, it isn't going to be. Our strength is our front-court, then our wings. Our PG play just need to be good to make a nice little run in march. But let's be honest, we aren't going to win the national championship, it's not going to happen. We won't be able to match up with the Baylor's or Gonzaga's of the world. We are elite 8 good, but it will take some serious luck/perfect play to make the final 4. This team has the ability to make a good run, let's just enjoy it, rather than throw our players under the bus after every win.

It seems you are insinuating that development only happens on the court during games? You know they practice still, right? Perkins, Ulis, and Joe all got plenty of PT earlier this year to be able to come into games and make an impact if needed later in the season. They've played against top teams, and I firmly believe they will all be ready if given the opportunity. Personally, I believe, the rise of Keegan is the single biggest factor in the guards on the bench not playing more. The pieces in the back court were there to compete with the Michigans, Baylors and Gonzagas given what Iowa has in the front court and the shooters but they needed to be developed throughout the season.
Probably would have had to sacrifice some wins and some feelings along the way for the sake of learning though.
This team could have had a far more diverse set of skills to use at the end but now its too late.
I don't see the current version getting past the 3rd game.
The one ace in the hole could be lack of time to scout Iowa. In a short turnaround all the focus will be on Luka and they may not account for the shooters.
That's what we have to hope for now.

Sacrificing wins for development? So we sacrifice some wins, drop to a 5 seed, and play Gonzaga or Baylor in the sweet 16, and because we got some of our 3rd string PG's more minutes, our chances would have been better than if we won how we did, finish as a 2/3 seed playing Nova, Bama, or Houston in the sweet 16? Is this really what you believe?
And that's why you are posting here instead of coaching. The assumption is that 2nd/3rd string pg become the 1st and 2nd pg and having better ball handling and defense the second half of the season you increase odds of beating Illinois, OSU and Indiana. Possibly even UM.
That is what I believe.
I used to think our fanbase had a pretty high collective b-ball IQ, but it's simply astounding to me that there are fans thinking Toussaint and Ulis should be playing ahead of Bohannon. My only theory is that to casual observers, point guards stand out as being the quickest players out there so they think that's all that matters for the position.
When we're talking about "fundamental aspects of success", are we still referring to the starting pg for the number 1 ranked offense in the country? Just making sure we're on the same page here.My theory is the majority of Iowas fans don't watch any other basketball besides the Hawkeyes and that combined with their fandom and a lack of experience with the game in general results in a limited and skewed perception of reality.
The need to be able to counter pressure on ball defense is a basic fundamental aspect of success that when not present will be a severely limiting factor.
If an opponent can get in your space and take everything away from you , you will not beat that opponent very often.
And that's why you are posting here instead of coaching.
Don't quit your day job!

Evidently winning basketball games and closing them out.
He’s our village idiot. I didn’t even have to read what you posted in this thread. You're posting here too dumbass.
That response has never made any sense any of the tens of thousands of times its been tried.

This! Is Jbo a great player.... of course he is. And he had several nice assists yesterday. Great trait for a pg to have. But handling ball pressure and playing defense are not his skills. I'm not sure how anyone can disagree with that.Yes, the insinuation that Iowas effecincy is due to pg play is foolish.
Its due primarily to Garza.
Iowa is still obviously a very talented team that does allot of things better than most everone else, but what they can't do is handle ball pressure against high level opponents.
Let's continue this discussion after the Michigan game.
If my point isn't proven I will eat crow.
Iowa is gonna win the national championship?I have some bad news for you......
i agree with most, it is of little value to have a player that can blow by his guy, only to squander the advantage with consistently poor offensive outcomes (TO, poor FG%, missed FT).Then the only option is Ulis.
The combo of JBO Connor is not an option for getting anywhere past the second weekend of the tournament.
You cannot play 5 guys together on the court where no one can beat a defender off the dribble and hope to win against a good team in a close game.
Absolutely can't do it.

After Michigan I'll eat crow as well. But look to the indiana and Illinois games as an example about pg play
Agree, A faster ball handler with consistent positive outcomes...No one would benefit more from having a faster ballhandler on the floor than JBO.

Not playing Joe enough is probably why his defensive rating has been worse than Jbo's the last 4 games. The assumption is that 2nd/3rd string pg become the 1st and 2nd pg and having better ball handling and defense the second half of the season you increase odds of beating Illinois, OSU and Indiana.
