Takes some chances throwing into coverage, instead of standing in the pocket like a statue? Or can we get a dual threat QB that can atleast run if it isn’t there.

This has to be the easiest offense to scheme against, biltz and play man coverage... Stanley would rather take a sack than throw into coverage. I blame most of the offense’s woes on him.

No he isn't. He has a decent arm, but he has no pocket presence at all and it's not getting better after 10 games. The game is still too fast for him and his audibling sucks.

Not to mention he’s completed maybe two deep passes all season. He doesn’t take shots down field because he has zero deep ball accuracy.

The pass he threw to Smith Marsette was a little underthrown, but was dropped before any contact. What I can't figure out is why we don't throw to Hockensen at least 10 times per game.
he is going to be our qb for the next two years unles he gets hurt. it wont make any difference how poorly he plays the coaches will never admit that we need a qb that can move and even run the ball when the opportunity is thgete.

was wondering how long it would take to trash Stanley and call for the 2nd string QB, SURPRISED
it took this long

Maybe we should pull a surprise and put Weigers in next week after the first 3 and out (likely the second series). How much worse could it be?

I thought the kid from Dowling was supposed to transform our offense into a triple threat style offense? Been so long since I've heard his name that I can't even remember his name!

Where have you been. A certain poster posts about it weekly.

Its about 50/50 on Stanley and the coaching staff/game prep.

One thing that is for sure, Stanley's footwork leaves A LOT to be desired.

A young brett favre would have problems if the defense did not have to respect the running game.

I have to admit, he does seem to be wearing concrete shoes at times.
he's said, or the staff or media someone has said, that he has had no formal training or coaching when it comes to footwork. it's definitely a major work in progress. He's shown flashes of having the tools of a very good QB, just needs to work on his problem areas quite a bit this offseason. footwork and pocket awareness are the most glaring right now.

anyone who thinks he shouldn't be Iowas QB right now though either isn't very bright or knows something about the backup that no one else knows

Wow, I did not know that. It's too bad Iowa didn't have a decent QB to play while Stanley learns. He could have stepped in once he was more polished. It's obvious he has talent, a gun for an arm, but he is still raw.

I could be way off but if I'm remembering correctly his high school coaches did not have a lot of QB experience beyond the high school level and he didn't take part in a lot of QB specific camps.

And we both know Iowa isn't exactly known for developing its QBs into much more than they where before Iowa

wouldn't matter much if he was. the o-line has shown they cannot protect the QB so who that QB shouldn't make a difference

Well, if the backup had wheels and could throw on the run, maybe. I don't think Iowa has a true dual threat QB, though.

Yeah, it's the second to last game of his second year. Then again that O-Line hasn't done much to help get into any rhythm, either. And yet, when they played uptempo late he actually looked good. I just cannot figure out why they weren't playing uptempo earlier in the third and fourth quarter. Well, we know why, but there's nothing we can do. It's so frustrating when you can see how much better the O plays when they go with tempo. Kirk's gotta run out that clock, though ... even when his team is down 15 at the start of the 4th quarter. *sigh*

Receivers that can't get open or catch a ball when they have a chance, and a OLine that can't block... leads to a nervous qb. Six sacks today when they had 16 total coming in tells me what I need to know about this OL.

There's options to give Stanley, but apparently the staff is too stubborn. Running five consecutive plays to the short side of the field is inexcusable to me.

Unless he's the next Ben Rothlisberger or Peyton Manning and there's a massive receiving corps upgrade, I'd much rather have a mobile guy that is just as ready to make a play with his feet as a throw.

Nate can get better at some things like touch on throws and pocket presence. But he's slow; a relative statue. That seems unlikely to improve.

Bottomline: 6-5 record as the leader of this offense isn’t exceptable (an offense that has scored less than our defense the last two weeks). I agree the coaching and oline are equally as bad, but the playbook and play calling haven’t changed since Ohio State. He sets the tone for the offense and you can tell by his behavior and body language during the games that he’s lost out there; not taking control of this offense with his leadership. Time for something different.

A little early in his career too. Getting Ferentized usually doesn’t occur until your JR or SR season.

Can't imagine how bad Stanley would play if he didn't have the newly designated quarterback coach. Glad Kirk 9and his CEO) decided to spend the money to hired him quickly before anyone else hired him. His expertise and coaching experiences with developing quarterbacks .....is unequaled. Another great Kirk decision that's paying off big dividends for the team.

Stanley is the least of our problems. No other program runs such a ridiculous audible scheme where his only option is to audible into a run that the defense knows is coming. Never mind that we have no legitimate WR and an OL that might be the worst I’ve seen at Iowa. I also think you can look at Tates regression from his senior year to a guy afraid to make mistakes as a condemnation on the culture and coaching.

This loss is on everyone. The o-line played like crap, the receivers dropped balls, Stanley threw some terrible balls and the rb's missed a few blocks and holes. I think Stanley has the potential to be a very good Qb but as we have all seen Ferentz really puts the handcuffs on them and makes sure they don't take chances.

Our scheme doesn't really put our Qb's in a position to succeed either, the receivers all run very predictable route combos and they are not very good at getting separation.

Great post! And spot on with our receivers. When they do get open, they drop catchable balls.

Our offense is essentially throwing to TE’s and running, which isn’t going to work.

Won't be next week. When Ferentz feels like there's a decision to be made between two QBs, he waits for the Bowl Game to hold tryouts.

I can see not running uptempo in the 3rd quarter because of the wind. Of course we gave them the ball and the wind in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter we played with no sense of urgency even though we were down 2 touchdowns! I turned the game off after our 3 yard pass into traffic that was intercepted!

Stanley threw quite a few passes into very small windows Saturday. It seems obvious that with the right play calls, and the WR's actually CATCHING the ball, Stanley would be fine.

Ruddock left and flourished at Michigan and is backup NFL QB

Beathard got sacked as soon as he got the snap last year and now
he is NFL QB.

Stanley is true Sophomore and he's got no run game, his receivers drop a lot of his passes, and his pass protection lets in free rushers several times a game.

I do agree Stanley needs to learn how to put some air in the ball. That is why we hired a guy that never played the position to be our QB coach.

It’s the KF risk adverse system. Rarely do we ever give our players a chance to make a play downfield unless they are running free. We check the ball down. Stanley is just another qb under KF that is hamstrung by his conservative nature. I have seen this movie before.
