Ok so new question I think I have settled on a vehicle. A 2022 Honda HR-V with like 13k miles on it.

Not what I expected but it gets 31 hwy which you could do better but isn't bad. But my wife has bad knees and has a hard time getting in and out of low cars. Plus it has all wheel drive for the winter and is a good price for the year and mileage.

They list it at 21k but I was hoping they might come down to 19,500 or 20k even. Is this realistic? Any negotiating tips?

I have others in mind if I can't get that one.

BTW I am paying cash if that affects anything.


Cash is king. You can start with an offer see what they want.

I love cargurus.com , they give great baseline analysis on prices, what a good deal is, etc. Lowest price they have a 2023 listed for (with AWD) is $21.9k

Remember they don't like cash - they make money off financing so don't share your paying cash until you negotiate the price.

Go in for a test drive, look it over well - always get on the ground and look under the engine area. Just a good practice and it lets them know your not just some rube that knows nothing about cars. Ask them their bottom dollar and say you'll give them 19,250 - I'd bet they'd meet you around 19500-19750.

They'll ask you early if you'll need financing - just tell them you have your own banking option but could entertain other options.

That's a 1970's line. Cash is king..... for the buyer only though.

They want you financed up the whazzoo - cash pisses dealers off - big dealers anyway - Mom and pop places that are dealing in auction cars still appreciate and like cash

Yeah, I thought about adding in as I typed, tell them you are willing to finance it if they go to 19k and then just pay it off in a month. But the math becomes a pain to eval up front costs, etc, etc.

Negotiate the price, then the method of payment. But cash offer makes life easy if they are just trying to move units.

Paying cash won’t help as dealers make money financing deals.

Well I screwed that because I delt with this dealer already and did some test drives and told them I would be paying in cash.

I doubt I will be getting that one if they can't at least come down to 20.

There are some less expensive HR-V's I might consider.

If they'll do 20, they'll probably do 19500 - they aren't in that thing for more than 17000-17500 I would guess.

What trim level is it? If it's a more loaded up model like the EX-L you're getting a great deal at 21.

If they'll do 20, they'll probably do 19500 - they aren't in that thing for more than 17000-17500 I would guess.

What trim level is it? If it's a more loaded up model like the EX-L you're getting a great deal at 21.

It is the base LX trim. I am mostly interest in year and mileage. I don't care much about features.

I am at dealer now while she is trying to find keys. I test drove a corolla which I like but my wife would have a hard time getting in and put of so HRV is preferable. Plus AWD would be nice in the winter.
Weird thing is this dealer has like a dozen used HRV's while most others have one or 2 max.

Nah, tell them you’ve decided to use the money elsewhere and finance. Then just make sure there’s no prepayment penalty (there shouldn’t be but I don’t know Indiana law for sure) and pay it off when you get the opportunity. Tell them you want it at $19,500 and you’ll come in today and sign the paperwork. They’ll give you bullshit how they can’t go there. Tell them fine, you have my number. Give me a call if you want to make a deal and I’ll be in that day to close. Wait it out and see if they call you in the next couple days. If not, text/call them one more time and tell them you have another dealer that’s willing to meet your terms but it’s out of state. Tell them that for $20K you’d go with them because they’re closer and you talked to them first. Don’t budge from there. They’ll either call your bluff and you’ll need to look elsewhere or you’ll get a car at the max you wanted to spend.

If it were me though, I’d lowball the shit out of them and start around 17k and go from there. But I’m patient as all get out, rarely fall in love with a specific car, and will take months to find the deal I want (and enjoy the process the entire time).

You should be able to get that under 20.

Tell the dealer that the HROT experts told you so, they'll be immediately impressed and give you the best deal ever

So they had one with 36k miles on it. Test drove it got the car fax. Got them to 22k including all the taxes and fees. They tried to add in a ton of fees for shit I didn't want including some reconditioning fee. I don't care about all that stuff. I will take as is. Told them I need them to get down to 22k after everything.

So that is what I got. Waiting to fill out paperwork. They said something about cleaning it so IDK if I will roll off lot today with it or just get it tomorrow. It is getting late and my house is an hour ahead of the dealership time zone wise.

For that money and what you need/want, you can get a couple years old Camry with relative low miles. It’s a no brainer. Get the Toyota. Here’s a ‘21 with 14K.


Or a ‘22 with 23K.


Tons of Toyotas in that range. And shipping a car isn’t scary and very easy to do so don’t feel locked into your local market.

Here is what i would encourage you to think about. That 2023 corolla is bullet proof, no doubt, it will go for years and cost little. But, you are going to put many miles on this thing, it may be worth getting yourself a slightly more comfortable vehicle to eat the miles in.



If you want to make a safe financial bet and pay the price a little with your back, nothing wrong with that 'rolla.

I'm tellin ya, 2013-2018 Avalon limited is the way to go - hybrid in particular.

One of my favorite pranks I ever played was on a new vehicle day. I bought a new Toyota Sienna in 2012. At the time our kids ranged in age from 11 to 14. They knew we had been looking for a new vehicle but they were at school when we finalized the deal, so they didn’t know yet.

Instead of bringing it home, I decided to park it at our local Kroger and left the driver’s door unlocked. When they got home from school we told then we were going to do a Redbox night. So we took them to Kroger and let them choose a couple movies out of the kiosk.

As we were leaving, I drove toward the new van. I slowed down and pointed to it. “That’s one of those new Siennas. I’ve been thinking about getting one.”

Then I pulled into an empty space next to it and said “Everyone just wait here for a minute. I want to take a look at it.”

I got out and walked around it as if I was inspecting it. I could sense my oldest daughter getting really uncomfortable. “Mom, what is he doing?”

Then I put my face right up against the driver’s window and looked inside. She got even more upset. “Mom, make him stop!”

Then I pulled on the door handle and acted surprised that it was unlocked. So I opened the door and climbed into the driver’s seat and grabbed the steering wheel like I was driving a big rig. She completely lost her shit.

“MOM, GET HIM OUT OF THERE!”

She’s probably still traumatized to this day but it was totally worth it.

So home now with the car. My bank suggested that I could just give them an account and routing number but I found out they couldn't do that. So I had to sign a promissory note that I would be back tomorrow with a check.

I have to go back anyways to pick up my old car.
 
It's funny how people will do all sorts of crazy shit to avoid paying an extra $500 for car.

And I'm guilty of that, too.
 
I'm looking at getting an upgrade at car since I'm currently driving a '09 focus with 160,000 miles to work, 50 miles each way. Plus I'll be making a bit more money. Looking at small or mid-sized sedans that get good gas milage on the highway. Looking to spend in the range of $15k +/- 5k.

Here is the question, is the "reliability" reputation of Toyota and Honda's worth it. Looking online I can get a 2023 or 2024 Kia Forte or Hyundai Elantra or Sonata with about 30k miles on it for about 18k. If I want to get a Camry, Corolla, Civic, Accord, Fit or Fit for the same price point I'm looking at something that is 3 to 6 years older with about 50k+ more miles on it.

Is like a 2019 Toyota/Honda with like 80k miles on it really going to last me longer and have less problems than a 2023 Kia/Hyundai?
Toyota Camry or the Hybrid version. Go Corolla if you want to go a little smaller or RAV4 for small SUV. My wife will only buy Toyotas. It’s true that nothing drives like a Toyota (in that price range). I Have a 22 Nissan Pro4X pickup that’s really nice but it doesn’t compare when I drive my wife’s 4 runner. Hell we have kept her 2001 Camry with 125,000 miles for our boys and it still runs great. We’ve had to put very little into it.

You should have started it up and driven over quickly to the family like you stole it, popped open the side door, and yelled “Everybody in, let’s go!” Your 14 year old daughter would have been even more freaked out but one of your kids (especially if it’s a young boy) would have been all “Whoa! Dad! Legend.”

Hell, if it was a push button to start, just pretend to hot wire, start it up and take it home. Never mention that you purchased it, just drive it for years. My eldest daughter would be besides herself with worry, but my youngest would think it's great we have a stolen car. I know which one is going to stress me out the most in 7 years.
