Car guys

You could probably get a used Tesla pretty cheap!

Just a heads up: This place sells what they refer to as "branded title" vehicles. This usually means that the vehicle has been designated as totaled by an insurance company due to an accident, hail damage, flooding, etc.

Will get the car fax but thanks for the heads up. The price does have me a bit suspicious.

Good questions.

I'm not a car genius but I have a few ideas:

1.) If you like your current car, I wouldn't immediately buy a new car just because you're making more money. God only knows what will happen with the economy over the next couple years. Save your wealth just in case.
One thing to consider, however, is what’s likely happen with new car tariffs driving the prices up drastically, the price of used vehicles rise as well.

And availability and choices get thinner.

Right now would be a wise time to update a used daily driver IMO.

The tariffs can get lifted as fast as they were imposed.

Trump is just using them as negotiating chips. Not a long-term solution for anything.

Yes, but that's just me - I like a larger, more luxury oriented vehicle. Nothing wrong with a Corolla, but it's apples and oranges in comparison

Corollas are "nicer" now, but they are very..... pedestrian. Its an entry level vehicle. If Im spending 100+ miles, Im going to want something that is nice. My commute to Denver years ago was always nicer in my better vehicle.

Not seeing a TON of Avalons that meet OPs ask, this tho. Flight and a drive home... :) Or, shipping for $500+ https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/inven...tedEntity=d291#listing=410720372/NONE/DEFAULT

Bro in law is a certified Toyota mechanic. He's a big fan of the the 08-15 era Toyotas.

That would include Lexus. (all Toyota parts + premium interior)

A used AWD Lexus could be good. Could be 10+ years old, but you can find them under 120k miles and under 15k. Get a good one owner copy and you could probably take it up 250k to 300k without much issue.

They can find your evap leak by using a smoke machine to fill the Evap system and see where the smoke is coming out.

I'd grab something like this one, probably get it closer to 17000 or so - from the dash pic looks to have around 75k miles - suckers good for another 200k easily

Sounds like your Focus has an evap leak and needs a thermostat. Minor problems. I'd fix it and keep rolling.

It isn't so much that the problem is untenable as it is when is the next problem going to come down on a 16 year old car with 160k miles on it and will that problem prevent me from making it to work or get me stranded an hour away from home??

My experience is that around 15 years old or so cars start having regular problems and you are doing repairs multiple times per year.

I have 2 vehicles with over 300k. I drove one with 347k on a 9 hour trip yesterday. You can't get to 350 if you give up at 160.

Glad you have cars that old you trust. I did trust my focus but 2weeks ago the brake started locking up, now this. Feels like it's on borrowed time. If I was working 20 min away from home at my old job, I might wait and see a little longer.

Do you have Uber on your phone, just in case your Focus breaks down?

There's almost 0 chance a 2009 Ford Focus will get to 350K miles.

What do you drive?
Ford f250 has near 350k and 4runner has a bit over 300k. I still consider both reliable but I fix any known problems.

I disagree with you about the almost zero chance of 350k on a Focus. They aren't bad cars. Most cars are killed by neglect and bad mechanics.

I thought older Ford Focuses were crap but I'm not an expert.

Check the insurance on the Kia/Hyundai. With the Kia Boys and the ease of theft of older models that has jumped the premiums on Kia and Hyundai models. Personally go with a a boring Camry and drive it into the ground.
Between my wife and I we had 3 Camrys and no problems. My wife drove a lot and put on >250,000 miles on each. I drove a little <110,000 in 14 years, again no problems.

After my wife passed, I wanted to get a new car, my daughter convinced me to get a Lexus, I got an ES300h ultra luxury, and I'm glad I did. It's an awesome car, quiet and smooth. A pleasure to drive.

Get a Toyota/Lexus, you will not regret it.

Ok so new question I think I have settled on a vehicle. A 2022 Honda HR-V with like 13k miles on it.

Not what I expected but it gets 31 hwy which you could do better but isn't bad. But my wife has bad knees and has a hard time getting in and out of low cars. Plus it has all wheel drive for the winter and is a good price for the year and mileage.

They list it at 21k but I was hoping they might come down to 19,500 or 20k even. Is this realistic? Any negotiating tips?

I have others in mind if I can't get that one.

BTW I am paying cash if that affects anything.

You could search for a similar vehicle and price and present to the dealer and ask if they can match it.

You could also offer the dealer $19K and try to meet in the middle at $20K.

That seems very realistic.

I couldn't find a similar one listed for that. I am just sort of wondering if the dealer would be likely to drop 1k off their price to move it.

Good choice,.. I'd be surprised if you could close the deal for less than 20K though,.. Low mileage late model Hondas are popular.
