Inside The Virgin Island Daily News you can always find the ubiquitous political and economic squabbles, the cruise ship and tourist news, the constant pressure of the gun violence in the territory, but there is also always a mix of US, Caribbean and International reportage, op-eds and sports.
Today, I just got a big smile from the Barry Wilner Associated Press piece, 'Not easy to go from NCAA spread to NFL' and a full-page draft preview. He cited several NFL personnel people and wrote about how most college teams do not prepare players to make the leap to pro-style offenses: "There is a tremendous learning curve as far as technique and fundamentals...a sense of urgency to get them up to speed." He went on, "Tight ends either are blockers or quasi-wideouts; rarely handling both duties... Fullbacks are almost nonexistent. Linemen just back-pedal and block."
Here's the part that made me happy: "As for the Stanfords and Alabamas and Iowas that use pro-style schemes...that's an edge..."; "when you go to Iowa or Alabama or Stanford, when scouts are watching the tapes...the prospects that come out of these NFL-like programs are probably getting half a round of elevation of grade in the draft (because they come in already understanding their multi-dimensional roles and with developed skills)."
But we already knew that.
