Carver Hawkeye Arena ranked #1

No, it really isn't.

There are a lot of factors involved, that I'm not going to go into.

But it doesn't really make sense to say it's just a product issue. The women are only .500 in conference play. And in no way is women's basketball ever a better product than men's basketball
You serious? The women’s team has played for the national the last 2 years. They just beat the third ranked team. Big difference in product and fan perception.

I guess the last couple seasons for the women increased season ticket sales. But that does not account for the difference in attendance between the two teams.

Neither team is very good this season. One sells out their games. Not even close for the other team.

And again, women's basketball is not a better product than men's.

The men have had way better teams than this season's women's team and weren't selling out.

It's not the product

Perfect example of the quote "It is better to keep your mouth shut & be thought of as a fool, than to open one's mouth & remove all doubt".

I would suggest it's not the arena, not the facility, but the great Hawkeye fans who fill it up every game that has earned this ranking. What is it--a nation's best 41 home sellouts in a row?
It's not the arena, it's the WBB fan base compared to other WBB fan bases in the B1G.

Eyes of Hawk has outdone himself again...hard as that is to believe.

No shit. I'm aware of what the rankings pertain to.

Guess I may have misinterpreted Dek's point. Thought he was comparing women's attendance to men's.

Even if he's saying the product is the reason for better attendance than other women's teams, that only goes so far when you're .500 in conference

Iowa women always supported basketball and they make up the majority of the crowd for the Iowa women's games. Back in the day they sold out the Vet for the girls HS tournament, mostly women attending the games too. 5 on 5 kind of changed the landscape and attendance declined...

You’re fighting a losing battle on this board.

Three things are to blame for the downfall of the men’s program: the coaches, the administration, and the fair weather fans.

From what I can tell, none of those three groups want to take any accountability for their share in the problem.
  • The coaches refuse to change and prioritize defense,
  • the administration refuses to change and fire Fran/invest in the gameday experience, and
  • the fans refuse to change and actually support the program more than they have for the past decade

Women's games are fun! Men's games not so much.

It's a circular argument, but fans go the games because fans go to the games. Sellouts are contagious. Fans want to be part of it. Cheering, yelling, screaming in a full arena is so much more fun than in one that's 1/3 full.

A friend of mine went to the USC game when they retired CC's jersey. He said it was incredible! The crowd, the energy, the noise - you can feel the excitement and it makes you want to go to the next game.

The fans simply love the women's team. That's what makes an arena great.

Any arena that doesn't have the student seating courtside, preferably behind the benches, hurts itself. Big aisles, down low, takes up valuable crowd space and is also a bad look. Those two changes could be a great improvement for the environment and crowd noise.

wonder if #3 has anything to do with the first 2

Chicken and egg.

“You have to win for us to show up. Which means you have to win with no home court advantage, piss poor facilities, and one of the worst NIL funds in the conference.”
