Ceasefire Agreement Reached in the Gaza War

Apparently Phase I of the deal could extend a truce for 42 days, if everybody lives up to the agreements.

Unfortunately, during that period, the details of Phase II are to be hammered out. Apparently among the sticky issues are arrangements to deliver a 2-state solution.

There's no way the Netanyahu government agrees to a 2-state solution.

We could have had this guy as POTY....
Thank you whiskey.

One special shout out. From my perspective, Anthony Blinken really worked his ass off on these matters for the last year-plus, and that should be noted even though we'll never really hear the real back story. While it's taken an awfully long time for this situation to stabilize, I have little doubt that through whatever personal invocations of hard and soft power he made (including during periods when the SecDef was effectively MIA), he helped successfully avoid outcomes along the way which could have been much, much worse.

Sooooo, does this make the “WW3 is imminent” thread obsolete or are we still doomed?

The Art of the Deal baby. Let them know what is going to happen to them if they don't come to the table Hamas caves. Viva La Trump! Winning again.

How or why would Israel manipulate itself into doing something that it hasn't wanted to do for months?... I think this is pressure from the US.
think about who is president-elect.

my hypothesis, which of course could be wildly wrong, is that the reality is that Israel has been in a position to dictate/accept terms for quite a while now, and that perhaps the reason they haven't is to continue to be a thorn in the side of teh incumbent's team.

My suspicion is that at this particular moment in time both Biden and Trump see value in closing this deal before 1/20,... Israel needs the US on it's side no matter who is in charge, and right now all the powers that matter want a deal...

I agree but it's biden's people... I doubt if he really understands it

the truth is: if peace breaks out anywhere it's great. I just don't trust it as far as I can throw it- the peace deal. not in the middle east.

absolutely. my point was simply that, say 3-4 months ago, the israeli's probably had some perception of who they'd rather work with going forward, and used timing in a way they thought might help achieve that.

Sure,.. I suspect that 3-4 months ago their plan was to just carry on until post US election,.. They knew what Biden wanted, but they weren't exactly sure how Trump might view things,.. Now it's all crystal clear.

A "tense" weekend meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and incoming Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff led to a breakthrough in the hostage negotiations, with the top aide to US President-elect Donald Trump doing more to sway the premier in a single sit-down than outgoing President Joe Biden did all year, two Arab officials told The Times of Israel on Tuesday.

Witkoff has been in Doha for the past week to take part in the hostage negotiations, as mediators try to secure a deal before Trump’s January 20 inauguration. On Saturday, Witkoff flew to Israel for a meeting with Netanyahu at the premier’s Jerusalem office.

During the meeting, Witkoff urged Netanyahu to accept key compromises necessary for an agreement, the two Arab officials on Monday told The Times of Israel on condition of anonymity. Neither Witkoff nor Netanyahu’s office responded to requests for comment.

How brainwashed were the people who believed it when staff said Biden was ‘sharp and focused’?

Are folks like Joe Scarborough in the brainwasher or brainwashed category?
Are you asking what level of brainwash someone has experienced?

I'm not qualified to answer that, patriot.

GTS.

No, I’m asking if you think Joe was fooled, or trying to fool others.

But you’re probably unqualified to answer that one too. Maybe next time, champ.

I think the discussions President Biden has held with middle east stakeholders has proved very significant to the ceasefire.

Not sure if he fooled or duped anyone in the process.

Oh yeah, when Reagan was in back channel negotiations with Iran to hold off the prisoner release until he was in office instead of while Carter was in office. Some call it treason.
So you are saying Reagan, who had just been elected a month earlier, was able to get in contact with Iran and orchestrate a deal vs a four year president?
