Haven't seen anything on this. Cops appear pretty aggressive approaching the guy, not sure if they can tell if he had the knife at that point. Probably still be alive if he had stayed on the ground after the first shots instead of going after the cops again.

Surprised the first protest over the shooting wasn't until yesterday. Family cancelled another protest after they were granted access to the body cam footage.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Cedar Rapids Police have released body-worn camera footage of the officer-involved shooting on August 30th that killed William Rich.

Cedar Rapids Police officers were dispatched to the 5500 block of 6th St SW following calls for service regarding violent domestic issues.

Video shows officers encountering Rich who is holding a knife before a struggle ensues. The officers yell at Rich to get back and fire shots him after he moves at them with a knife. Then, Rich gets back up and moves towards the officers again with the knife still in hand. Officers yell at Rich to get back down before the second round of shots are fired.

According to Chief Jerman, the officers shot at Rich following protocol after he refused to obey orders.

I usually am one of the first to side against the cops, but it sounds like this Rich guy had multiple times to comply and didn't.

Aggressive? Did you listen to what the police chief said about the 911 call?

The guy had been arrested previously multiple times for domestic assault against the same woman in the video.

What exactly would the family be protesting in this case?
They wanted the body cam footage released. Now?

This case will be real easy to close.

The dead guy had it coming.

Good riddance. And race has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with the response.

just a bad, bad situation. Everyone talks about the dead criminal, but it is hard as hell for the policemen to go through that. I wonder if or when the officers will be able to be able to resume past duties or if they will have to take a role that does not require potentially dealing with these situations

I guess I look at it like going to war as a soldier.

You hope you won't ever have to use your service weapon, but expect that someday you will.
