CHA Atmosphere Sunday

I thought the Atmosphere was awesome on Sunday. Great home mat advantage.
Going strong at CHA for over 40 years! Home mat advantage so strong it became a verb.

It was electric when Spencer came out!

There is not a better atmosphere anywhere. I'm so glad Iowa hasn't fallen for the Hollywood, turn the lights off, spotlight on the mat mood. Can you imagine turning the lights off on the fans and keep them in the dark? Will never understand why schools do this. Leave that to Vision Quest, the movie theater and when I go to bed to sleep. Thank you Carver and Iowa Wrestling!

They tried this once during the Zalesky years…. The fans spoke out loudly against it, even during the dual it occurred…. Ourselves included. It was just awful. The next week the lights were back on and have been ever since.

Do you happen to remember what year that was?

A lot of eastern Iowa high schools do it. South Dakota State University does it. Terrible

Why didn't you guys like it? Hard to see the wrestling?

I remember that. People got almost as vocal as the NCAA where they kept bringing out the plants for the award stand ceremonies.
A few schools did this in H.S. in my day. The C.R. schools, I think Bettendorf did it my Senior year and a few others. I liked wrestling "in the spotlight". Not that I was ever aware of my surroundings when I was on the mat, but it focused you on the mat and took out distractions.
I can't really say I care one way or the other as a spectator, but if you're a cheerleader watcher it would suck.
With current out-of-bounds rules they'd need to widen the circle of light.

I still can't believe that a recruit that attends a big time meet at Carver does not commit on the spot. I know PSU has a good atmosphere, albeit a lot smaller, and they have had the national commercial for their program the last couple of years at Nationals, but the size and atmosphere at Carver is unrivaled.

Now that I think more about it…. You’re absolutely right. Chants did break out.. “Turn on the lights! Turn on the lights!” They actually may have turned them back on at intermission of that dual even.

It was a "chicken light". Made the gym darker but not blacked out.
You know, I do remember it wasn't near a complete blackout.
Of course that was in the 90s so I may not remember it clearly.
We didn't do it for, I believe, safety concerns.

AMEN, brother. When you have great crowd like we have at Carver-Hawkeye, why leave them out of the atmosphere? Bring in our big advantage.
