Seems to be staffs top target at PG, was offered earlier today. Moore, Santos, and Rakocevic all play will be playing together for Mac Irvin Fire this summer. Would be nice if we could land all 3.
Appreciate the feedback, but truth is you weren't high on Ulis either.Originally posted by combes:
Good player. Not close to Ulis, though. He's no secret. Morgan Park is a high profile team in Illinois. He did not play the point for MP. Played the two. Lovett was the point.
who is bragging? the comment made ..was under the radar...Moore is hardly that.Originally posted by 4th & 9 inches:
Living in Missouri and hating the Tigers, I have to make this comment:
Mizzou is not an offer I would be bragging about.

Nice article:

Combes, you were pretty lukewarm on Ulis as I recall, until he blew up.Originally posted by combes:

I don't think he questioned his skill/ability. IIRC, his only concern was whether Ulis' size would be a hindrance at the high major level. Honestly, that's a valid concern for any player that size.Originally posted by HawkLogic:

It certainly would be for a Division One college player that happened to be a center. In fact, if folks will recall Brody Boyd had some difficulty with defense as taller guards would shoot over him.
I believe in the NBA there have been a total of thirteen players listed under 6". However, in college it is not all that uncommon for a point guard, and if one can get the right athletic ability and skills...sign the guy! You won't be sorry.
As to Combes, he is a knowledgeable poster but has also shown a remarkable knack for saying certain players haven't played point card, or don't play point guard. The article I linked above calls Moore point guard. ESPN calls Moore a point guard. Sure, LoVett happens to play point as well, and both he and Moore start...but that is the only reason to not say Moore plays point.
Would we say that about Clemmons if he started alongside Gesell? "He did not play the point"?

there is no way this is even close to being accurate
According to basketballreference.com, there have been 125 NBA players measuring 5'11" or shorter, including Iowa's own Dean Oliver and Murray Weir.Originally posted by BlueHawk23:

I completely agree with this as I generally do agree with your outlook on things Houston. Fran has recruited smaller as of late possibly due to getting the best available players in wings but I think we have to get more size especially with Woodbury graduating next season. I know many fans like playing small but I think we will get further as a tournament team with more size. As you mentioned earlier hopefully Fran puts all of his emphasis on post players and point guards in this next recruiting class.Originally posted by HoustonREDHawk:
Ulis has the luxury of having a front line of shot blockers behind him at UK. Great player, but he is in a very good place to minimize any problems guarding bigger players.
Moore looks like a really good prospect, but his size will be more of a concern if the Hawks don't have a big guy or two, like Gabe, who help protect the basket. For PGs, having the quickness to stay in front of the opposing PG is the most important defensive skill. Moore has plenty of quickness.
Edit to add: I LOVE the Wisconsin drive or pass to the free throw line and drawing the big away from the basket. Several times a game you can count on a cutter coming underneath for an open pass and lay up/dunk. It made our bigs look dumb, made bigs on several teams look dumb.Originally posted by hawkeyemark:

I think a quick defender, regardless of height, is less reliant on post players backing him up than is a taller, slower defender.
While a shorter player may struggle to defend outside shots, there are many successful point guards in college under 6'.
A huge key by the way is the complete unknown as to how the NCAA will decide to officiate games in the future. Are we going to start allowing hand checking and moving screens similar to a body check in hockey? Or are we going to call the fouls as promised two seasons ago? That kind of makes a difference as to whether we want the Flash or the Hulk defending guys on the exterior.
Size inside?
It seems to me about half the league has embraced bruisers over 250 lbs and as many as they can get, and the other half is signing stretch fours, even stretch fives, and forcing those bruisers out of their lairs under the basket. Very few teams trying to do both.
