See he is visiting this weekend. Already offered by Illinois. Long, athletic with great hops are a few adjectives that describes this young man.

This young man plays above the rim and would be a great addition to our 2017 class along with Connor.

He has already unofficially visited Wiscy, they know good talent.

no question, a good talent

But our current ride open in 2017 is going to a big man

It's possible but Fran has said several times in the past, he'll take the best player available regardless of position

Alot of people say Connor deserves a scholarship, and I have no problem with that. If I was Fran and in his position, I would kinda have in the back of my mind that if 2 quality players wanted to come to Iowa in 2017 class, I would play with Connors scholarship. Give it to him if there was only one player who wanted to come. If 2 quality players wanted to join the team I would pay for my kids way to get the 2 other young men.

So is Negron a slasher/shooter or is his game closer to the basket?
Here is a video from a 10/20/2014: . In it you can see that he fits the prototypical long defender that McC likes. He looks to be still growing here as 15-16 year-old, but looks very strong for his age. Good shooter who has good to great hops and enormous looking hands. I think he is worth a serious look.

Thanks BBHawk. He definitely looks like Fran's type of long multi-skilled/positions player in the White/Uthoff/Uhl tradition but probably with more upside. He'd be a frosh when Uhl's a senior too, passing the baton.

Only thing that bothers me is that I think he plays for Mac Irvin Fire. o_O I really don't feel like going through anything like the Charlie Moore stuff again.

He could certainly do this for a year if it were a can't miss prospect. But, that assumes that the next year, you won't get someone better. I guess what I am saying is you would only do this for a can't miss prospect when you don't think you could get a guy of equal value a year later.

If Fran was certain this prospect could lead to more wins and performance bonuses in his contract, then he could pay his son $25 grand to be a walk-on for a year, and they would both be happy.

So did Moss.

Good point. That's the thing about Nick Irvin guys. Sometimes things can go well, sometimes they don't. They tend to decide much later than other recruits and I'd hate to get in a waiting game.

I hear what you're saying.

Let's just say it's highly unlikely that we'd be in a situation to turn down a blue-chipper with 13 scholarship players at Iowa in this day and age. Further, I'm sure Fran considered what he'd do in such a highly unlikely scenario long before it was a twinkle in anyone's eye here and I'll follow his judgement every time long before someone not nearly as close to the situation.

Nunge and Negron will be visiting along with Bohannon, Pemsl, and Connor
The offer list for Nunge and Negron both have Iowa as the top or a top offer. With Iowa only having 1 scholarship for sure and speculation on 2 with Connor paying his own way, seems to me there is a real chance at least one of the 2 may commit this weekend to have a guaranteed scholarship.

Agreed. If you were ever considering "playing" with some scholarships, this is the perfect opportunity.

And absolutely I believe both of Frans boys should be on scholarships, but we don't know how many guys who aren't seeing the court bail out to a mid-major or whatever. I don't think anybody wants to see ANYONE transfer, but the reality is it does happen, and this puts Fran in a position very few others in the profession can legally do. All-American Doug McDermott played without one his Senior year, if he can, anybody can (and it was the right thing for Creighton to do under the circumstances I believe).

My guess would be Nunge might commit, if anyone does. He is familiar with the city, the Iowa program and Fran is 100 times a better coach than Crean (and living in Indiana, I suspect he knows it).

There are certain things I believe one cannot take part in if they are a walk on versus scholarship player, I believe. Like training table meals? I think that is right. Maybe someone can clarify?

That just went away before this past year.

Connor will play a lot for the Hawks from the beginning, kid deserves a Schollie. I really like Negron's video. Look at the shoulders on this kid, he has great hops and will only get bigger when he gets older.

Actually it has everything to do with it. Iowa has only one scholarshio to give in 17 unless someone leaves.

Asking the coaches kid to walk on to add another recruit is not fair to Connor. Kid deserves a scholarship and we should honor that. I think Negron would be my choice for that one ship, others may want to wait. Fran can spot talent a mile away so I trust him to bring in the right kid.

In the event another schollie opens up, then recruit someone else.

In closing, wonder how the visits went last weekend.

I know what you meant but LOL

Deserving it has nothing to do with what we are talking about. Of course he does.

And what do you think I meant by "Deserving it has nothing to do with what we are talking about. Of course he does."? In case you are struggling with it (as it appears that you are), this means that YES, Connor deserves a scholarship.

And HE knows it. So if HE (Connor) says "Dad, we have more than enough money to pay for my education so why don't you use it for so-and-so so that they can still be part of this team?", do you think that McC should say no? Just checking...

The same discussions were happening when Brian and James Ferentz were playing for Iowa. Just because someone is able to pay for college doesn't mean that they should have to if they are good enough to be on scholarship.

If LeBron James' kid wanted to play at Iowa would you ask him to pay his own way just because his family has money? No.

According to the front-page headlines, "Iowa heavy contender for 2017 forward" Chirstian Negron.

Nice headline after playing Penn State;)
I can't recall Iowa keeping a full roster of 13 B-ball scholarship players for more than 1 season without somebody transferring. Iowa at most plays 10 guys...3 guys will always be deep bench and thinking about transferring. I would assume another scholly will open up next year from somebody in this Freshman class leaving early. I doubt Fran would have his own kid walkon...there is certain amount of prestige in getting a scholly.

First off, I would be very surprised if we did not see one of our many young wing players transfer, which would free up another scholarship. Secondly, not putting Conner on scholarship would probably not be advantageous b/c as we know only 5 can play at a time and a rotation above 10 (as we saw a few years ago) is just not effective. That would just mean that more scholarship players are not getting minutes and therefore would probably lead to some issues on and off the court including transfers.

be very surprised if 1 player doesn't transfer after this year. my guess is ellingson if the kid from nashville passes him up.

I see where Negron is rated the #6 player in Illinois in the 2017 class. That would be another huge commit for the Hawks. Sounds like he and his family had a great visit.

Well... If LaBron James was the Iowa basketball coach and his career would benefit from having another scholarship, then yes... duh. It's not like either of Fran's kids are going to pay their own way regardless, their dad is.
