CJ Fredrick commits

Fran has had his share of whiffs. The Andrew Fleming commitment came out of nowhere like this. Hopefully this guy has better athleticism and shooting ability than Flemming and actually sticks.

Every program ever has "whiffs," if you are defining it by guys who don't play much. With 13 scholarships, there are guys on every roster who aren't good enough in their careers to crack the top 8-10 players in a program at a given time. The guys who aren't good enough to play that leave aren't a problem, it actually allows the coach to turn the roster over more quickly.

Fran hasn't had a rotation player transfer out of the program in 7 years. That is rather remarkable.

Aren't we as fans quite amazing? Iowa is getting some great players that won't play much and we are all concerned about it. If playing time is a problem it is a great problem to have for our Coach. Plus, he knows way more about who may leave or stay than all of us put together. Fran is doing a great job imo!!!

If every coach could predict player potential, injury likelihood, and development 100% he'd only need an 8-10 man roster.

Last year there was speculation that Bohannon and/or Kriener were recruiting reaches. Fran doesn't bat .1000, but he has built good depth at Iowa. With Wieskamp and a redshirt Top 120 McCaffery (Connor) he has no need to take a low potential recruit in the 2018 class.

I think Fredrick was unknown, as a recruit, because of the limited scholarships available for 2018. Should those that follow Iowa BBall recruiting, have foreseen a recruit that might be willing to walk-on a year before going on scholarship?

I have a couple thoughts on this. First, I didn't see anywhere that he accepted a scholarship offer. Someone mentioned Grayshirt as an option earlier. Maybe he just wants to be a Hawkeye, and will take whatever he can get as far as money goes? ----I misread this originally, I read it as Covenant Christian out of Indy. The following still stands for future reference, just not in this particular case........ Secondly, for those of you that are questioning the skill level. I can promise you that second, and even third tier basketball players in the state of Indiana can contribute to a good D1 program.

They are getting a good walk on. If he gets a scholarship at some point. Great. If not, then he likely wasn't good enough. I don't see the big deal. There is still the chance there are transfers and there is still a chance Connor decides he wants to dedicate himself to baseball.

I just don't see any reason why Fran would provide a scholarship to either one of his kids. There's really no reason to. Save the but the kid earned it bullshit. Of course he did. But Fran makes enough money that it's like $100 to most of you. Paying his kids tuition has 0 negative effect in any way and is only positive
This is exactly right. Any competitive advantage Fran can get by paying for his kid's schooling he is going to take advantage of. I would be very surprised to see either Connor or Patrick on scholarship while they are at Iowa.

Fella's it's not hard to figure out, 14 or 15 guys can't play during the course of the game. The coaches have said this first hand, so there is going to be some attrition. There has to be. Can't keep everyone happy, unless some redshirt but from what I've heard from inside locker room is Nunge and Garza will be immediate impact players if not starters!

So, you heard "inside the locker room" that 3-4 players will transfer? I expect one transfer after the season, and wouldn't be shocked if two guys transfer, but there is no reason to expect anything more. It will work itself out, but there isn't going to be some mass exodus of unhappy players.

Haha, the coaches thought 2 guys would leave this past season. Hence the offer to Joey Hauser and so on.

Considering I'm Wieskamp's AAU coach I hope I know or talk to someone. I'm not trying to be an Ass, I'm simply saying you can't please 12 kids, let alone The 17 this season including walk ons. Something has to give, I don't think it's going to be a creaning or anything negative like that, I just think the staff is very mindful of where there at. Like I said can't please everyone!

I'm not sure I completely agree, but times have definitely changed. Not that long ago coaches had 15 scholarships, most players stayed 4-5 years, and transfers were much lower. Even though 3-4 seems high to me, it wouldn't shock me. If some players don't see as much playing time, as they expect, and they get passed by freshmen, they may decide the playing time is with someone else.

I appreciate the contributions here, from some AAU coaches that work with players we recruit!

Didn't realize who you were, but I still think 3 or 4 guys leaving after this year is a high estimate. I agree that there are going to be some frustrated kids this year, and that a transfer or two would not be surprising. For example, I don't see how both Williams and Dailey would stay next year, especially the one getting fewer minutes this year. If those guys aren't playing this year, they almost certainly will play even less next year. If Uhl earns significant minutes this year, I think that would greatly increase the likelihood of an interior player transferring. It's too early to speculate who will be the odd man out. Having more quality players than you can play is a good problem, as long as it doesn't hurt team continuity and comaraderie. I think the coaching staff has always done a great job of managing the team, so I am not worried about that.

Curious, since I haven't seen Wieskamp play, do you see him as a 2/3 option next year or strictly a 2? Any prediction on whether he can earn a lot of Moss and Ellingson's minutes as a true frosh?

I dont think Fran or staff would tell anyone any specifics regarding the 'current' situation regarding his roster size and the possibility of transfers....other than principals... I don't know who the talk to someone is ... but it is really not a revelation that transfers are part of the college landscape.

The roster size is 13 not 17. Obviously the 3 walkons are not in the same boat as scholarship players...and of course we all know what the situation is with Connor.

I've never understood the "can't please everyone"...this isnt junior high where mommy & daddy might get upset if Johnny doesnt get to play....its about winning at the B1G level. If Player 12 or 13 or whatever doesnt get the PT they are looking for..they have the option to seek more PT elsewhere....that is perfectly normal.

So if you add walkons,,,sure there is a possibility that 3-4 guys could leave...course we all thought there would be transfers after last year.

I appreciate your work as JW's AAU coach...looking forward to JW joining the team next year.

lots of speculation in this thread, but i just assume it will all work out in the end. that being said, seems kind of odd that there wasn't a big announcement post on the HR homepage and really not much in the local press about it either.

It's been stated by multiple posters, some with UNI ties, that the Iowa Staff reached out to Green multiple times and Green has no interest in playing basketball for IA - wouldn't even return the IA staff's calls. It's also been mentioned that Green's dad, a UNI assistant coach, dislikes the IA program.

It is a two way street, the recruit has to show some interest before extending an offer. There is no way Green was coming to IA - not because IA wouldn't have taken him or they didn't have a scholly available. It was because Green wasn't interested.

Again, all second hand but it's been stated by multiple posters. Seems legit to me.
This. Not sure why Dean doesn't understand that.

AJ Green other offers- Minn, ISU, Virginia, Clemson
CJ Frederick other offers- Penn St, Xavier, prior Indiana creaning staff-no commitable offer.

Water under the bridge now, but you can't deny one scratching their head a bit with this verbal knowing Green was out, no scholly...which we know now isn't true and Green's still uncommitted. I hope CJ ends up better than most scouts think he is just like every Hawk fan.

It has been stated on here repeatedly, by people that supposedly know him, that Green has absolutely no interest in playing at Iowa. What do you expect the coaching staff to do, kidnap him? Time to move on.

And that was like 5 days ago I commented, the full story came out, I comprehended and moved on 5 days ago. You like finding old comments to correct so you can feel smart, smug or whatever? I even replied in this very thread 5 days ago acknowledging this. Have a nice day...

Kidnap him? Hmmmmm. Nah, I think that would have been an interesting idea during the Lickliter era considering everybody seemed to want to escape anyway.

Most knew this, more than a week ago. Also, sounds like he committed to UNI today.
