Most of us, myself included were ho hum, ehhh on this guy, and then hearing Fran's hyperbolic comments on him or so we thought last season as he Red Shirted. Oh boy, insert some Crow this guy is freaking good, he is a good defender and he is so smooth from 3 and can get to the hoop as well. What a solid get by Fran, this guy is going to be a great piece for Iowa for 4 years.

He's a good player. The fact that Fran hasn't had a good track record with 2guards + this kid was a family friend made it look iffy.

Agree completely I was leaning toward that though process prior to seeing him play this season...

I can’t believe he was willing to play without a scholarship. Best player we didn’t expect to be this good since white. I love love his game. I hated when Fran kept him on the bench way too long in previous games. He had and deserved all his minutes tonight. LOVE when CJ, Wieskamp and Toussaint are playing together.

There is no doubt that CJF was assured that he would have a scholly. It was a function of timing & public announcement. Brady & Ahmad made some nice contributions but they weren't returning that next year.

Totally agree with the rest of your post. CJ deserves all of the minutes he can possibly garner. He's that good.

I was sitting above the tunnel and every time he went out he went back there. Was he riding a stationary bike to stay loose or what was going on?

I literally can not think of one weakness to his game. He is outstanding.

His one weakness is he's still a Freshman red-shirt and opts to give up scoring opportunities to others. That will change with more playing time and additional seasons.
If some of you were willing to view his high school youtube video's instead of comparing him to Josh Oglesby, or Brady Ellingston just because Fran has had issues in recruiting 2 guards your'd have seen the player we see today. Kids really good and you can see why Kentucky's coach regrets not giving him a look. That turned out to be a big plus for the Hawkeyes. Thank god Fran has connections, it really paid off at least this time.

it was a 4 for 5 deal initially but obviously stuff comes open every year for various reasons.

I was wondering where he went, I was thinking crap I hope he isn't hurt and in the locker room. Damn nice player for sure

One thing I noticed was a couple of times we had none of our scores in the game at one time. Seems like if we are going to take out our starters we should do a couple at a time. Can't have 4 of the top scores on the bench at one time!!!

Kid is just special sooo tough and efficient. Time we start running some plays for him vs burying him in the corner. Love his constant motion and ability to feed the post is so impressive. I would love to really know how Fran pulled off getting this kid away from the midwest schools Cincinnati, Ohio State, Xavier, Dayton, Indiana, UL, Kentucky. Give Fran credit he does a great job finding gems.

Fran is a friend of the family, and they must have great confidence in him since CJ initially committed as a walk on, without a scholarship...

Thats crazy...the thought of that kid walking on is nuts.....most complete all around guard we have had in years. I saw kid on bike trying to stay loose looked like his leg was bothering him pretty bad. Hope hes ready to go Thursday.

As mentioned above the kid is very consistent. He does defer to the other players but, is still able to execute at a high level.....he made a very tough lay up in traffic at high speed. Then he can work to get open and drill 3s at a high rate all while playing hard on defense.

Once the young man gets a comfort level with asserting himself into the flow of the offense I am guessing it will be more than Iowa fans that recognize how good he is.

I love CJ's approach to the game. Hard charging and no nonsense. Strong with the ball, and knows how to move without it. If he's open he pulls the trigger without hesitation and has been making them at a good clip. Seems to want to play good defense as well. He's a winner and fun to watch. I am really happy he's a Hawkeye.

I wish we had both Fredrick and Moss. Both would play plenty with maybe a three man rotation at the 2-3 spot with Weiskamp. Iowa would be a better team with all three getting 20-30 minutes per game between the two spots.

Everybody is right on this young man. What a terrific all-around guard. His shooting touch is Uthoff, Weiskamp, Bohannon good, and I think he'll be a guy Iowa can count on for those big threes late after JBo shuts it down in a few days.

Smooth is right. The kid has tremendous body control and a velvety shooting touch, and with Joe T. coming on, JBo really should have no problem waiting one more year for his senior go-round. And as good as this team looks to be this year, wait til next year when you add Bohannon back in there. Quality starters, quality depth, size, speed, athleticism.

I've been a critic of Fran, and I still am regarding Iowa's inability to consistently block out on the boards and play vicious defense, but give him credit for putting together what appears to be a much better team than most people--including me--expected. Now if they block out and get consistent on defense, this could be a really exciting season, and CJF will be one big reason why.

saw him play in hs multiple times. He was tough as nails. Has very high bball IQ and that "gym rat" mindset. Will do anything and everything to help his team. Had several epic battles with Jaxson Hayes and Moeller. CJ starred and single -handedly beat them his sr. year.

When people were dissing him when he committed, I kept saying on the boards just wait. Talked to his dad after their first visit. They were at the 2016 Iowa / Michigan football game the big upset....Great hard nosed kid.

Agree on CJ exceeding expectations thus far. Not playing like a freshman. Looking forward to his quad healing. Where did the poster/s go who claimed Evelyn gave Illinois State fits in the scrimmage? Not trying to be a jerk, but am genuinely curious if that was fact or rumor given what we have seen thus far. Was expecting something from a graduate transfer.

I agree. He makes every right decision and never hunts his own shot. He needs to start being more aggressive or coaching staff will need to run some plays for him. I saw him play in state tourney and just knew the kid was different than all these posters on here were saying. He just dominated. I think he is just getting started and with Connor Joey and CJ WE HAVE A HELL ON A BACKCOURT.

I fear he will be very limited on Thursday, if he were healthy I'd feel really good about beating ISU at the Power Plant.

That's true and that would be one of my biggest gripes with Fran this year. I know offense is not our issue compared to defense but Fran had Touissan, Evelyn, Connor, Pemsl, and Kreiner in at one point. That line-up is decent defensively but that is a line-up that likely will struggle to score. For an extended period, I would worry that group would struggle to put points on the board.

Fran doesn't have a good track record when it comes to praising low rated guards. This is why many including me doubted heavily the claims Fran was making about Frederick. I will happily eat crow.

He could go down as the best guard of the Fran era. He has that potential. As a redshirt frosh he is already a + outside shooter, + scorer from inside the arc, + on defense and a + ball handler and passer. I can't remember a guard under Fran that was this polished so early in his career. The big question for him will be can he be THE guy when he is a JR and SR when he will likely be the #1 or #2 target for opposing teams defensively? Right now he is playing comfortably behind guys like Garza, Weiskamp and Bohannon. Would love to see Patrick grow to become a reliable 12-15ppg kind of guy in a couple years to be the perfect wingman for a player like Frederick. Not to mention if one or both of the Murray's break through in a couple years. If Weiskamp, Garza and Bohannon come back next year look out for Iowa to be top 4 in the B1G.

Weird Fran stuff.

I think he does that because they were gassed

The problem is we don't have a bench that can score this year

I don't have any empirical evidence, but I don't remember us blowing a big lead after one of McCaffery's line changes. They seem to be able to at least hold their own until the starters return.

The second team doesn't have the offensive firepower of the first team but they ha e been as good or better on the defensive end.

Yeah, I can't say it has happened yet - at least not on a large scaled - and it might not. I just do get a little worried when I see that line-up in. I was just hoping for a little more balance but maybe it will be a non-issue.
