CJ FREDRICK

I don't have any empirical evidence, but I don't remember us blowing a big lead after one of McCaffery's line changes. They seem to be able to at least hold their own until the starters return.

The second team doesn't have the offensive firepower of the first team but they ha e been as good or better on the defensive end.

I didn't rewatch to confirm, but I think at one point we had our defensive lineup in and actually increased the lead by 4 against Minnesota in a several minute stretch. Not that it was because they scored a lot, but because they got stop after stop and did get a few run outs and free throws.

CJ is really impressive. I don’t recall seeing a freshman playing that composed since Ray Thompson. No weakness in his game and tough as nails on 3 point shooting. Could be a great before he is done.

Actually, that is really a good comparison now that you mention it. Ray Thompson was really, really good and had so much potential as a Hawk.

The thing is; so does CJ Fredrick. He's outstanding.

At the game today at Carver kid is special.... at half 2-2 5 points , 3 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 assist ...can does it all.....He has to get more than 2 shots....he should be in the 10-14 range every game

Yeah, he's going to be a great player. barring casualties, physical or academic, our backcourt is going to be strong for the next three seasons.

What makes him special is that he can score 8 points but make the team so much better.

He will finish his career with a lot of respect in the state. Very similar to Jordan Bohannon in the end

?
Nothing like JoBo other than he can shoot it. Otherwise a much more complete player on both ends. Maybe if JoBo were a few inches taller and quicker...

Ahhh, but that’s just it. JBo is mentally tough and so is this kid. Respect.

Hes got to get more shots cant have a kid shooting 57 % from fg and 52% from 3 shooting 5 balls thats freaking crazy. Today was my second game at Carver. Crowd sucked. This team is top 25 and place is empty. I also notice how CJ makes the extra pass to his team mates but they do not do it back to him. I hope their is not any freshmen jealousy going on.

Your writing is as good as your powers of observation. Your SECOND game at Carver? Get OUTTA here! You have no effing idea. The only missing seats were students and some of the season ticket holders who aren't back from San Diego yet.

Rookie!

You are lying, it was an official sell out.

First time at Carver as well and left unimpressed with the crowd. I realize the students make a difference and lots of folks brought their young kids (us included). Would still like to get to a BIG game to see the difference. Is there this much distance between the court and crowd at other BIG arenas?

I’d peg the empty seats at 15-20%

Where in the ell were you seated? obviously not in Carver. I got there an hour and fifteen minutes before game time and by the start of the game was amazed how many fans showed up for this meaningless game that was by all means a practice scrimmage. That may have been the most fans to attend a non conference game at Carver since the Iowa State game last year! It was outstanding considering the students were not in school...and they mostly don't come to the games anyway....
No one got hurt, thankfully and we'll see how this team can proceeds without JBO starting this Saturday against an improved Penn St. game in their own back yard!
Go Hawks!!!!

wtf? The game was a sellout despite no students or bowl travelers, it was a great crowd for a buy game.

We were up by 40, of course it wasn’t really loud.

There is a lot wrong in this post. Considering it was a game against an overmatched non-conference opponent during winter break, Carver was rocking. I have been to 4-5 games this year and it was by far the most filled the arena has been this year. I was actually shocked how many people were there considering what I mentioned above.

And Frederick has received many passes from his teammates. This whole team is amazingly unselfish. I think they had like 27 assists on 36 made baskets. It’s also completely likely that Frederick doesn’t see the need to hunt shots against a team they crushed by 40. In big games this year, Frederick has taken more shots and come up big. But he’s not the type of player to just throw up shots in games that aren’t even close just so he can get his stats.

Yes it was my second game this year you clown. I dont care what they announced as attendance my eyes do not lie place was not full and the crowd was weak as far as loudness and cheering. And my observation is correct we might have a ton of assists by dumping it in to Luka and Ryan but guards still dribble too much and do not make extra pass especially to CJ.

I think Wieskamp is in a bit of a funk. He in particular seemed to dribble a bit too much on a few occasions, missing some open perimeter teammates. He might be over thinking things this year. Last year he had upper classmen - guys like Bohannon - taking the lead so he could just fit in and take the shots that were given to him in the flow of the offense. This year it seems like he's trying to force some things and it has him predetermining his actions before he catches the ball I think. Hopefully he'll find the right middle ground between being a leader/catalyst this year while still letting his instincts determine what the best thing to do with the ball is.

I think he looks a lot better the past 5-6 games compared to how how he looked the first 8 or so games when he was obviously pressing.

The biggest problem is overcoming the "its just a" kind of game mentality.

Every game should be an event people attend. The student tickets should be free until we start selling out. The first few rows behind the visitor bench should be all students. Award events for the best costume, like the Raiders. Have lotteries for lunch with the coach or admission to a practice. If we're going to use a student band instead of blaring loud hard rock we make certain that the band is close to the visitors bench (maybe march a lap of the court during time outs) and get as loud as drums and brass can get when they're by the visitor bench.

Make it a raucous, nasty snake pit where people go for the shenanigans and not just some kind of subdued cerebral basketball analysts or an Iowa-nice church service. You get a better home court advantage if the officials think they might get lynched after a dirty call. Not saying actually lynch them

Carver should become Thunderdome in black and gold.

There is always LOTS of room in the student sections. Just who tf would they be reseating?
Maybe they would come if they had good seats. If i'm 20 years old, paying to get in and have options, I'm not going to carver with binoculars

Nope. Even the students with great seats don't always show up. Pretty bad look when everything but the student section is almost full.

Let's see what happens when the students get back. So far they have been pitiful. Like most years, they show up for a handful of games. Can't waste good seats on that.

Thats crazy...the thought of that kid walking on is nuts.....most complete all around guard we have had in years. I saw kid on bike trying to stay loose looked like his leg was bothering him pretty bad. Hope hes ready to go Thursday.
As was explained he wasn't really walking on. Fran most likely knew that some players were leaving and he no doubt told CJF he would get one of those as soon as he could announce the departures.
