CJ Jones, see you later...

I was there. Troy Polamolu and Huggie Bear's boy is what I remember most. That, and all the other pasty white people walking around on Ocean Drive. Almost forgot, all the ****hole SC fans.

I think we would have beaten USC if we played a week after the Minny game!

Then the rest of the game started.

Would have been ok except for the false start at the goal line that lead to a FG instead of a touchdown and then the other missed FG inside the 5. It probably should have been Iowa 17-10 at half, maybe even 21-10. Then we aren't forced to throw as much in the 2nd half although not sure if Lewis still would have fumbled or not.

Just like Stanford in the Rose Bowl, Iowa wasn't as far away from USC as it appeared from the score alone. I know, "ifs and buts"...

The Rose Bowl against Stanford wasn't as close as the score imho.

That may be true, I was headed to the beer tent by the end of the first quarter and still haven't watched the TV broadcast.

That said, and I should have been more clear if Iowa and Stanford play ten times, that's the worst game we have.

Uhhhmmm...I was pretty trashed during the Orange Bowl in 2003 and don't remember a single play after the opening kickoff. However, I was 100% sober for this year's Rose Bowl, and I don't know if there is enough booze in the state of Iowa to disillusion me about the ass kicking Stanford gave Iowa.

Yeah, I worded it poorly. See post above yours. Maybe people disagree... But I think Stanford was on that day and Iowa was off. Not indicative of the true matchup. But I was at the game and decided to get hammered with buddies once it was 28-0. If it was never 28-0 please just let me go on thinking it was, ok?

Wasn't it 10-10 @ half? Maybe I'm wrong but people act like Iowa got blown out after that kick return. The Rose Bowl was an immediate blow out. A tied game @ half isn't.

My Dad rented a limo to go to the game. As we were rolling down the highway in a rented limo with Hawkeye magnets plastered all over it, a bus pulls up beside us. A USC frat bus. All of us being slightly inebriated, we start flipping them off and making obscene gestures referring to Carson Palmer and his sexual orientation. Then......we pull into the parking lot and the attendant parks the bus RIGHT beside us. We are about 5 strong, (pretty big guys) and this bus is about 50 strong. We kind of all look at each other, and through all the jeers and name calling, we get out brimming with swagger and confidence. Amazingly, they were all cool and we kidded around with them and drank a few beers....It's great to be a Hawkeye.

This. So many people forgot we should have had another TD having ball first and goal inside the 2 and then getting a short FG blocked before half with play before banks just barely over throwing a sure TD. Remember at half thinking no way we should be tied and then the 2nd half happened. Unlike Rose Bowl least it was a game for 3 qtrs instead of 3 plays. And least we had the CJ Jones play to remember from that game where as Rose Bowl no great play to remember back fondly on.

This whole thread is some of the most amusing football talk ever. Bravo.

When's last time Nebraska played in a major bowl game? Since that time Iowa's played in 3. Time to go back to your board where you can defend Coach "OWI" your WR coach.

Only hawk fan would reminisce about a past bowl game loss. Hilarious. What's your favorite memory of the Rose Bowl last season?

Sadly the image that sticks in my head from that game is Banks sitting on the sideline late in the game looking like someone just kidnapped his dog.

Classic case of the prepared team beating the party-ed out team. USC was professional, we were not.

But, that said, it wasn't comparable to the Rose Bowl. In both cases, I think the result doesn't reflect the quality team we had that season. But at least in the Orange Bowl we were in it. It really should have been at least 17-10 and probably 21-10 at halftime, then who knows. Not an excuse, as USC beat us straight up. It's just that a couple plays in the first half change the tone of the whole game.

I dunno, man, bowl games are just weird.

And I have no problem with a random retro-review type thread. It's mid August for crying out loud, what are people supposed to talk about?

I suppose we are within a week or so of these thread titles:

First offensive play call against Miami?

Who scores the first TD?

YES / NO Miami, OH

*****OFFICIAL GAME THREAD*****

I wonder if it's as simple as teams like Stanford/USC are used to playing in coastal cities, being on the beach, and are used to the atmosphere, whereas a lot of these Iowa players are going to the coast for the first (or one of their first) time. I can imagine myself in the players' shoes and it being pretty hard to treat the game as a business trip, as a college kid from Iowa, going to California or Florida.

Really, it's no excuse, and maybe I'm not giving the team enough credit, but I can imagine going out there and just getting caught up in everything going on.

Lol. Okay. And yeah, I agree Stanford played great and Iowa played shell-shocked. After that first McCaffery play, Iowa just seemed completely out of their element. I do think Stanford is better, but the game should have been more competitive, you're right.

Will never forget that moment. I was there with my dad and we were in the upper tier behind CJ ... I remember the stands just shaking. It was deafening. Iowa fans took over that stadium. We know how the game ended ... But the entire trip will always go down as one of my most memorable Hawkeye experiences.

I didn't read the whole thread because ... it would have been too depressing for me. So, I apologize in advance if this has been said, but what I remember about the game was that Iowa was still in it in the 3rd quarter and on back-to-back possessions, Jermelle Lewis fumbled after running for huge gains behind huge holes. I'm not sure if Iowa would have been able to win, anyway, but if Lewis had not fumbled twice in the 3rd that would have been a really competitive game going into the fourth quarter.
