Fran deserved his suspension, he was asking for it. He called a ref a cheater after a game and you cant do that. What he doesn't deserve is the unbelievable backlash on social media. People act like coaches don't curse at referees. They do. ALL. THE. TIME.
Heres a few choice examples:

First off from our "morally superior" brethren to the West. Coach Rhoads can be seen visibly yelling "**** YOU" to the official REPEATEDLY.

And the holy savior Matt Campbell dropping repeated F-Bombs at the Alamo Bowl,
at 54:48

Second, the GOAT of coaches Bill Belicheck chases a referee down after the game and physically grabs him at the end of the video

Finally, heres some Mount Rushmore of basketball coaches losing their lids.

Jim Boeheim with the F-Bombs

Roy Williams slamming a chair and yelling at his team

You can find clips like these from almost every coach out there. That doesn't make this behavior right. But Fran shouldn't be judged differently because he doesn't win as much as these folks. Either cursing at an official is okay or its not.

And before anyone says "well Fran chased the official down the hallway." True, and thats what warranted the suspension. But, thats also a slight mischaracterization. Fran didn't "chase" the ref down the hallway. Liestekow reported that Fran was yelling at the official as he was walking to the locker room and turned into the locker room once he got there. Few reactions on social media acknowledge this point. Still, shouldnt have done it, deserved the suspension, but not as heinous in hindsight.

The fact of the matter is Fran lost his cool. He shouldnt have said those things. He earned his suspension. Media blew this out of proportion when EVERY coach loses it from time to time. Lets not turn him into a martyr for this. Fran should stop yelling at refs after the game and try to be calmer in the future. Lesson learned. End of story.

Classic 'what about-ism' from Fran-Con.

If ive learned anything on this board is that people would rather have it happen on national tv for everyone to see rather then in the tunnel

Any examples of a coach calling an official a mother f’er to his face and not getting tossed?

That’s completely different than just general swearing.

See my youtube above...Collins calls the umpire a co@k sucker.

I would agree to a certain extent. However, a lot of those coaches you used as an example have win a crap ton of games and titles. By all accounts, Fran is an average at best head coach in the Big10.

Is he worth all of the crap that goes with his coaching style?

And he should have been tossed. IMO the line is calling the official names.

Maybe the pros toetate more. Maybe it depends on the coach/official relationship.

IMO it’s very poor behavior and those doing it should be embarrassed and not complain about the consequences.

So it does make a difference what you can get away with if you win! Wow! You must be one of high character. I bet you feel your character surpasses Fran.

The holier-than-thou attitudes on here are cute. Put anyone on here in a college basketball coach's shoes, and let's see how they react to the abysmal lack of fairness in a fast-paced, no appeal option, immediate reaction sport. Give me a break. Nobody on here would behave significantly differently than Fran. Even mild-manner Tom Davis went after officials often, but his small stature and "gentlemanly" perception made those incidents go virtually unnoticed.

Fran was wrong. His choice of words was horrible. But let's stop pretending it's more than what it is.

Don't you know the things that doctors, lawyers, judges, professors, politicians, and business people say when they get upset? Don't you know the language they use? People on here have no excuse for being so naive or so self-righteous.

Yup and also calling an official a Cheater and yelling at them in the tunnel is such an over reaction and makes the coach look like a lunatic.

Idc if it’s on tv or not all coaches yell at the officials. Just last night ole miss coach was assessed a T for throwing his sport coat off. Meanwhile in UNI game Loyola coach does the exact same thing and no T.

Coaches are going to over react and use profanity, it’s sadly acceptable in the college game.

But yelling at an official in the tunnel after shaking hands and game has ended is a MAJOR MAJOR NO NO! That should never even cross a coaches mind (especially after getting blown out). If it was a judgement call to end the fame, okay maybe a little upset, but still shouldn’t happen.

But what if the official is a cheater?.........

Your right he must have gotten paid off by Ohio State. And when calls go Iowa’s way at home, Barta is paying off the refs. It’s a full blown conspiracy. There is money changing hands everywhere, but mostly when Iowa gets beat. Do I have this right?

Why must it have been Ohio St? Could any person in the sports betting world approach McJunkins and monetarily compensate him for making sure OSU covered? Is it possible?

Do you know what a question mark means? Let’s start there.....

Officials are watched closely. Anyone who thinks an official goes into a game and wants to be noticed is a moron. No official wants to be noticed. They want to call the game and get out there. No official has an agenda against one team or another. They want to work a clean game and move on.

I worked with several referees over the years and I have yet to meet one that comes to a game and says “I’m gonna screw this team over”. Face it, it does not happen. Even if an official is being one sided, I always mention something to them about it and let them know that they need to even up or be prepared to get yelled at. Am I the perfect official? Hell no, I miss stuff here and there, I’m human. I tell the coaches before the game I will hustle and call the game. If you coach your players we will get along just fine.

Hasn’t failed me yet, only handed a few T’s this year and they were for minor stuff (swearing, wrong line up, etc..)

He doesn't spend it.). It’s a full blown conspiracy. (And yet it's true...) There is money changing hands everywhere (Especially at Kansas....), but mostly when Iowa gets beat. (Mostly.) Do I have this right? (Nope. :))
The f*** is your problem, feeding other Iowa fans false hope that officials would dare give them the benefit of their calls in a Big Ten Conference basketball game.

Have you no shame?..........

Also, it isn't the fouls that get called that are the biggest issue but often it is typically of the fouls that are not called or the type of game (see outside of the written rules) that is called. I get that some official may like a more physical game but quite frankly them interpreting the rules to what they prefer isn't really their call to make.

I completely disagree. What you say may well be true for most, but certainly not all referees. If what you say is true then explain why teams get more calls at home than on the road? This is almost universally true.

Especially those that may have a gambling or drug problem. They are people like anyone else are are suseptable to all the same ills as everyone else.

So, a coach should win a championship at any level before they can go apeshit and cuss and call a ref a dirty name? Mmmkay...

How far you gonna go?

The only reason that is true is because the road team always has a notion that they are being homered. I know some officials do get caught in the moment, but the good ones call a fair game.

Iowa had 11 fouls and PSU had 20? That was a home game for PSU, how does that work?

Purdue 18-11 vs Iowa at Purdue?

Fix games? Could NEVER Happen! Signed Tim Donaghy

you really think coaches have said worse than "mofo" and still stayed in? Seriously?

I could see arguing about the "cheater" part and questioning a persons character but kicking someone out/suspending them for profanity? That is some straight snowflake garbage man.......

Again most officials are pretty level headed people. They also go through drug testing during the season. Also even if a guy is corrupt, the other two would step in if they were trying to fix games.

Trust me if it’s happening then there would be some bigger upsets. I guess a 16 did beat a 1 last year maybe those officials were putting down heavy $$ on UMBC

Nope, but donors and fans will put up with that kind of embarrassing crap if they are winning. Fran is both an embarrassment and has been a below avg coach for most of his time at Iowa.

Based on your responses, it sounds like you want Fran gone. I dont blame you, but wont necessarily would go that far.
