College basketball is cooked

Tourney needs to be overhauled.
Let a few upper seeds have byes
Let more mid-majors in

SEC was vastly overrated, and letting a half dozen of their teams in w/ sub-.500 conference records was BS.
Expansion seems inevitable. I wish there were specific prerequisites to get an at large bid. Win x amount of games. Finish above .400 in league play. Would love mid majors get an automatic bid with. 25+ wins if it expands. But I fear it would wind up being 12-16 teams from the power conferences getting in.

I guess that is the question. Is it anomalous or a sign of the new times due to NIL and transfer portal rules. Sadly I think the later given the SEC….looks at notes….got 14 teams in while ACC got 4. BIG and SEC had 1/3 of the teams. Money matters.
The SEC teams still in it are 60+% upperclassmen that weren’t on their respective teams last year. That’s NIL. The only reason this might be somewhat anomalous is that a bunch are Covid 5th year players. High school recruiting was almost meaningless for any non-Duke team.

There’s also a big rise in foreign players playing here for more money than they’d make in Europe.

Yep. I also hate how emerging superstars from small and mid major schools will never finsish there and will now almost always be enticed to transfer and play for a bigger school for a ton of money. Gone are the days of Stephen Curry electrifying a tournament with a Davidson or a Ja Murant at Murray State.

Which is how you end up with this overall boring tournament with honestly one of the grossest looking sweet 16 brackets I have ever seen. Every time I look at it I yawn. Zero mid majors. Only one hish seed team made it and they are a SEC team.

It was a fantastic tournament if you are a hillbilly with three teeth who chants SEC every time one of their teams win.

Outside of the BIG teams, the only player I can name is Cooper Flagg. Just a bunch of unknowns to me, but you would be correct when you say stars from small schools are just going to get swallowed up by big schools.

Gone are the days of the small school loaded with seniors that make a run.

Even the upsets now are one power conference team beating another power conference team.

Never will it go back to the way it was. Too much money now. Somebody good at a mid major can likely be poached by a big school for minimal money.

I’ve said for years (since Covid killed that season) they should do away with conference tournaments and expand the field to add another weekend. Adding in power at large teams because of wins in November is dumb and if teams are going to get in with 6 league wins plus another W in their conference tournament is pointless. Just let them in and also open the door for some smaller conference teams that would otherwise have to win their tournament to get in the field. And kill the NIT.

Expansion will likely be the big conferences getting even more in which doesn’t interest me. I admit the little schools likely won’t deserve more spots because their good players will get paid to go elsewhere.

Expanding it won’t save the tournament for me. It’s likely already dead to me in terms of what it once was.
