College Football Playoff Diminished by Allowing a 3 Loss Team

Yes. They should.

This bullshit from ESPN has warped your brain.
Oh my God. ISU would have gone about 6-6, to 5-7 with Bama’s schedule.

Stop.

I hate Bama too, but they probably played 6 teams better than the best team ISU played. I don’t watch ESPN outside of games.

Talk about a recipe for avoiding challenging matchups. We’ll never see a good noncon matchup ever again if your reasoning for playoff inclusion were to ever be used.

I don't really get the desperate need to determine the BEST team. Playoffs are about determining the WINNER. The best team doesn't always win, which is what makes it interesting and fun. Interesting and fun mean entertainment and money.

There will be 16 teams in the playoffs someday and may even include a 4 loss team.

Not to many people argue about which teams should get into the playoffs in the NFL because it's all simply math. I'm sure there are teams left out every year that could beat some of the one's that get in. The beauty of it is - the entire season is a tournament!

I don't want CF to become CBB where no one cares about conference champions or regular season games.

College football fans - "The 12 best teams need to be in the CFP"

Also college football fans - "The program that has dominated college football for the past 15 years, which is ranked 4th in Power Index, 9th in Massey composite, 10th in Strength of Record, and 11th in Committee/AP/Coaches, shouldn't be in the CFP"
The highlighted part is irrelevant (and exactly what some are decrying). What they did this season is relevant.

National Champion in college football should go to a team that wins during the regular season. Allowing a 3 loss Alabama team a chance to win reduces the playoff to just a holiday tournament
??
How so?
The play-off involves 12 teams..you don’t think ‘bama is one of the 12 best?
They are close if they aren’t. Picking 8-12 is more “art” than science.
I bet their SOS is one of the best in the nation. They play in easily the most competitive conference in the nation.

Iowa lost 2 MSU, UCLA, AND ISU.

Iowa on the road likely losses at KSU and ASU. Maybe at BYU and KU.

Big 12 gonna score. Iowa gonna struggle to score
And Nebraska rolled the team that tied for first.

All of those teams you listed are a little above average, just like Iowa. If you’re trying convince me that Iowa would lose on the road to some of them, that’s not exactly convincing. Of course they could. Iowa is not great. Just like the top of the Big XII.

If any team ISU was better than Iowa, it was by a hair. Like I said, Iowa MAY have been the best team they played, if not, damn close to it.

It took a one of the worst meltdowns in KF's career for ISU to beat us by a last second field goal. The rest of the year they struggled with bad teams and finally got burned by one later on. They are the fake ID of college football and will get steamrolled in the playoffs. At least Bama will put up a fight against anyone they play.

Steamrolled in the playoffs? They're going to get steamrolled in the Big12 championship game.

Alabama has not one, but two bad losses. Any other team with the same resume is off to the Music City Bowl.

You woke up so early to post this that you forgot that 'Bama has 7 wins over teams with >.500 records, and has 3 wins against the CFP top 20 and their "bad" losses were to .500 teams.

Nobody likes it, but 'Bama is gonna be in the expanded CFP and they'll deserve it. The only way they possibly don't is if Clemson wins today and the Committee takes SMU as an at-large instead.

so only the teams with the easiest schedules should get in?

If you are going to base it off record then there should be flex scheduling to ensure the playoff contenders in 18 team leagues have to play the other play other playoff contenders.
Teams are more than welcome to join other conferences for easier schedules. Does the admin and fanbase prioritize money or wins and culture?

I dont even know what this means. If you play in an 18 team conference and don't play the good teams ( Indiana ) that doesnt make you one of the 12 best teams. It makes you better than the bad teams and a beneficiary of an easy schedule. It doesn't make you one of the 12 best teams.

Indiana is #8 in Strength of Record, so although they didn’t have a gauntlet of a schedule, metrics show an 11-1 record is pretty impressive. They’re also #10 in Power Index and #8 in Massey Composite, so I’m not sure where you’re getting your opinion from other than your head and bias.

Please explain which team(s) will get left out of the CFP that are more deserving than Indiana. Since ‘Bama is probably in, Ole Miss is the only team I think has close to an argument, and they have 3 losses, all to teams currently unranked (1 with losing record) but do have 1 high-quality win (Georgia).

ok. we will see how it goes. the talent staked team they actually played in season they got dragged. at me when they make some noise in the playoffs. I won't be holding my breath. I've watched CFB for 40 years.

NC State won the 1983 Title as an 8 seed. 2007 Giants beat the undefeated Patriots as a five loss team. St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series in 2006 as an 87 win team. Los Angeles Kings win the Stanley Cup in 2012 as an 8 seed.

2011 Seahawks win a playoff game as a 7 win team. All those teams left memories.

I for one don't want to see a three loss Alabama in the field. But I'd rather have them in that way than having the committee screw a one loss Boise out of a spot or a very hot two loss ASU out of a spot entirely. Which would happen. Let Bama go play at Notre Dame , Ohio State or Penn State in December. Much rather see that than them in the Sugar or Peach.

I think the mindset of college football fans needs to change to refrain from being frustrated. Football has become basketball with its own version of March Madness. The championship is just to crown the champion of the tournament. It doesn’t mean that team was the best team throughout the year. Essentially, by having the tournament the NCAA is admitting there is no good way to crown a champion, so just have a little fun with the tournament. Coaches/AP naming a champion wasn’t satisfying. The BCS left people wanting something different. The four team tournament led to complaints. This next level tournament is for entertainment only and they’ll keep adding more teams to it. Some years the best team might win, but several years it will just be the team that got hot at the right time.

This is a great post. I think every conferences fans sit around and crap on teams in different conferences rather than appreciate the storylines and entertainment. But CFB is so tribal. Obv it’s the big 2 but there’s amazing talent and stories beyond that as well.

Fans of average BIG/SEC teams (this year) rooting for an Oregon or Texas with a 25-30 million dollar NIL budget over ASU with 1.5 million budget shows how deep the tribalism and passion is in CFB.

Oklahoma 6-6
oh yea Wisconsin

Killer schedule.
And they lost to Vandy and got totally piss pounded by 6-6 Oklahoma. Wisconsin was f'ing horrible. We all knew this would happen. A 3 loss Alabama team would somehow sneak in the playoffs. It will happen every year for any number of the Blue Blood programs. SMU basically plays a road game for their conference championship and loses a heartbreaker while smug ass Alabama is sitting on their hands at home because they couldn't beat the worst Oklahoma team in decades. And now, here comes the gift for Alabama. 12 team playoff really solves nothing. Just more controversy. How is this system much different? We still have a room full of gray haired old men deciding on more than half of the field who gets to play by a VOTE. College football was more interesting when National Titles were voted on. Alabama should be playing in the Music City Bowl, not the playoffs.
