A great man. Great coach. As much as people complain, we could be Illinois, Minnesota. Indiana. It's not a huge stretch. Those states all have larger population bases with no other large in-state schools to compete with. Not to mention how impeccably KF represents our university.

True, but all three of those states have pro teams and not as much fan interest in the Illini, Gopher, and Hoosier football teams as people in the state of Iowa have for the Hawkeyes. I understand your point but not exactly an apples to apples comparison.

Pro teams are a non factor. Michigan, Penn State and O$U compete with several pro teams and still sell out 100 K every Saturday. Teams without interest are the ones who haven't won forever. Fans are fickle. Iowa was only drawing 45 K when Laterbauer and Commings were here.

I get it, we probably won't win a national championship under Kirk. But he has given us a consistently competitive team for 19 years in a less-than-ideal recruiting locale. He is a more positive representative of the university than so many of his arrogant peers. He is proud to be a Hawkeye and didn't just use us as a stepping stone when he had the chance. Let's give the guy some much deserved credit!

And he'd have a few more if he could beat Northern Illinois and North Dakota State et al. a little more often. KF hasn't exactly faced the likes of Oklahoma, USC, and UCLA in the noncon.

To be fair, he played the hell outta some tough non-cons early in his run:

He played #5 Nebraska (then non-con, obvi) in Yr 1.
#8 K St and #1 Nebraska Yr 2.
#16 Arizona St Yr 4

I get it, we haven’t played much non-con lately. But that’s the lay of the land of upper-tier but not elite programs today. But it’s a stretch to hold a “weak non-con” against his career mark, especially when comparing to Hayden, who knocked down plenty of tomato cans himself.

I guess I don't understand the premise of your argument. We don't get to overwhelm them on the field because we have more fan support. Those schools have better recruiting areas in their backyard and as much financial support available as Iowa does. The fact that Iowa has invested in facilities and coaches salaries, and maintained stability should be to their credit, at least in how they match up to these peer schools. Illinois and Minnesota are certainly capable of competing at a higher level. At least they should be.

It's honestly remarkable how much people forget that about Hayden.

OSU has 4 kids in their class this year from ohio, 2 of them are towards the bottom of the class.
So, its not just location.....

Northwestern actually has a better football program
than Illinois in the past 20 years. Fitzgerald is doing
a good job in the Chicago market. He puts a prepared
team on the field and they play with toughness.

Funny you say that...I've been on their board a number of times over the last five years & you'd be shocked how many of their fans have wanted PF fired for....interestingly enough similar complaints as KF… To predictable, too conservative, doesn't make adjustments, too loyal to his staff, etc, etc.... you honestly can't make this stuff up.

Proving it's never enough for a "those fans"

Lets look at the last 39 years.

For every 3 games Hayden Fry won, he lost 2.

For every 3 games Kirk Ferentz has won, he has lost 2.

Iowa claims one national championship in its entire history. Not sure we will EVER win a national championship under ANYONE.

From HawkCentral:

Hello, Hayden

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta presented a game ball to Kirk Ferentz after his seventh bowl win as the Hawkeyes’ coach. The milestone that the ball represented was a biggie — Ferentz has 143 wins, tied for most in school history with his predecessor, Hayden Fry.

“Probably one of the best decisions I’ve made, outside of asking my wife to marry me, was coming to Iowa in 1981 (as an assistant on Fry’s staff),” Ferentz said. “And like so many things in life, you have no idea what you’re about to walk into.”

Ferentz, who will receive a $500,000 bonus for getting an eight-win season, was apparently emotional in the locker room.

“How he cares about his players,” defensive end Parker Hesse said, “is what makes him such a treat to play for. A guy you’ll really follow anywhere.”

Don't you know that Iowa never lost to an "unacceptable" team under Hayden, hell we never punted. We went for it on every 4th down and never won with defense or playing smarter than the opponent. Iowa could easily be Purdue or Illinois or Minnesota with the wrong coach, and my guess is we'll get the chance to find that out at some point in my lifetime when the wrong hire is made. Here's hoping KF has one more great 2-3 year run in him.

With a lesser coach, we could easily have a program similar to Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, etc.

That's the point. Complain all you want about losing some games we should win-- I get it, that is being a fan-- but for a UNIVERSITY, we could not do much better between coaching and mentoring young men, consistency, and representing the school. I went there--maybe some of you b***** about it don't get it. It matters to have a winning program AND a clean one represented by a guy like Ferentz.

This is what's wrong with the Ferentz apologists. It's always that things could be worse, never better. I bet you guys dated/married the mediocre, homely girl because it could have been worse, she could have been ugly . Being the best or near the top doesn't interest you.

They also have pro teams people care about allot more than tbe college teams.

It would take allot for Iowa to be that bad.

To say pro teams aren't a factor is completely absurd.

You can have both, doesn't mean its not a factor.

There is nothing wrong with me. I respect integrity. This is my university. I don't think you understand much about the dynamics of college football frankly. There are far more programs that WISH they were us and God forbid the pedophile issue at a much better 'program' in the name of winning and saving face. Would you take Baylor's success for those few years in exchange for its current reputation?

Go b*tch about your favorite NFL team, because that is where your focus belongs.

Stepping stone to what?

Hes got damn near the best job in football.

Youd have to be insane to leave this job.
