Cook is not NBA material

Exactly. Cook is the teams best player and after a tough win to move to 6-0, we have a thread bashing him. Predictable but sad.
You reap what you sow.

He gave me extreme stress by missing BOTH FTs, so I’m going to call him out on an open message board as pay-back. Fair is fair.

Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to start a thread adulating him when he actually does something clutch in order to seal a victory.

Definitely nothing wrong with having aspirations, he has been pretty up front about that. There is also nothing wrong in pointing out the areas where he isn’t cutting it. Unfortunately, last night, there were many including lack of composure. He appears to me to still be inconsistent in getting his game figured out. They are trying to showcase him bringing the ball up and creating more. Results have been suspect at best.

As for Bohannon, I’m not sure why you’re bringing him up. He gets CRUSHED on this board regularly, far more than Cook. Case in point, "Bohannon can't guard anyone" thread.
Just using Bohannon as a random example. Could have been Baer or Nunge or anyone else. Point being, most kids aren't NBA material and we don't need to throw that in their face as a criticism just because they have voiced a dream. I just think it is a cheap shot when there are other more legitimate things to criticize, as you point out.

Pitt knew Tyler Cook was the Player they needed to stop most on this team, he was triple teamed when he touched the ball! Lol & that game plan almost worked.. those freshman for Pitt Outplayed Iowa after they were triple teaming Tyler Cook.. what does that say about the whole team.. quick, atheletic teams will give Iowa fits..

Very good point.

This shouldn't surprise anyone as it's always been the case....

I think it should be noted that while this has certainly been the case, our results are much better this year. I would argue that UMKC, Green Bay, UConn and Pitt all could have been games that were lost last season. I think we have proven in the UConn and Pitt (2nd half) games specifically, when these guys want to and need to toughen up the D, they can. That is a far cry from last year. 6-0 tastes a hell of a lot better than 4-2 or whatever. We came out soft and sloppy last night. I am glad we got the W.

Tyler Cook almost seems too muscle bound. Also, he's going to have to develop a much thicker skin and mentality. Besides basketball deficiencies like free throw shooting and poor ball handling, it just seems like he's lead laden in movement.

My problem with Cook when he went down was just laying there. Unless something is broken, you get your butt up and get down to the other end and help your teammates who are battling 4 on 5 . Laying there the whole time when you obviously weren’t too hurt was not a good look .

He was embarrassed. He knew he was out of control. He was acting hurt. All of us "know" this whether we admit it or not.

Cook's not a very good shooter outside of 3 feet. Needs to have a jump shot to play in the NBA. Layups and dunks won't cut it unless you're Shaq. Especially now when you have to beat teams like Golden State.

His offense is fine, its everything else he doesn't get.

Hes always semi lost on the court other than one on one offensive situations.

3 defensive rebounds for the game. Thank heavens Joe W understands what needs to happen to win. Dumb turnovers and bad shots from our “experienced” players.

I told people, Joe will either be the best or second best player on the team sooner than later. Depends on which is the real Cook.

Once the older players accept that Joes the guy things will be smoother.

My biggest concern was our staff’s inability to get the ball inside to Cook on the block. Some many of our fans assume TC just gets to freelance. If true, that’s on Fran. We should have been hammering the ball inside and did not. The constant railing of TC is ridiculous. He’s not perfect, but I’m having a tough time finding a player that is on this roster.

Part of that is on him. He doesn't want to post up all the time.

If he put forth a determined effort to post up every time down court he would get it most times.

Maybe you’d be doing her a favor if you did.
You think she isn't aware of it? I mean what would be the end goal? What is the end goal of this OP? Does it make you feel better about yourself disparaging others- especially young men playing a basketball game? I just do not understand why people feel the need to express their opinions (especially negative) publicly......many times those people are the least secure people bc they have to feel as though they are valued

Should we start a thread titled “Bohannon is not an NBA player”? Kid has NBA aspirations and for some reason half the people want to use that as a slam at every opportunity. Nothing wrong with having aspirations.
If he actually wastes someone time this coming offseason to evaluate his game for the NBA I will definitely be starting a thread...and especially if he misses two FTs at the end of the game like TC did.

I said “maybe” cuz sometimes people are surrounded by minions who are too scared to tell them the reality of their situation.

I think when it comes to physical appearance people are pretty aware, stupid and crazy people are generally the last to know....in either case what is the point? Who am I to point out others flaws? What is a flaw to me may not be to others, I have been humbled personally enough in my life to know that I am in no place to disparage others. Especially young men who happen to be busting their butts to represent my favorite team.

...and never will be.

That is all.

What's the point of this thread? A lot of really good college player never play in the NBA, yet can have big impacts on everything from conference championships to national championships. Pretty likely that nobody on this team will ever log significant NBA minutes. So why do we even bother to field a team?

What’s the point of message boards in general?

To discuss things relevant to Iowa sports. While Cook fixing holes in his game could make Iowa better this year, whether Cook plays in the NBA has little bearing on Iowa's hoops success this year or next.

Cook has a better chance of making the NBA than 100% of the people complaining about him. Moss on the other hand, while it is good to have aspirations, a man does need to be realistic.

.

"To discuss things relevant to Iowa sports." That answers your own question.

Waaaahhh, buncha whinyass babies.

I am not the most positive guy and was frustrated many times during the game for sure, but my takeaway is that the boys fought through a lot of adversity and pulled out a win despite not playing well, and in a game they would have lost by 15-20 last year. Not to mention there were actual adjustments at half, and they were defensive adjustments, allowing less than half the points in the second half as they did in the first. Teams don't put forth their best showings every game, it doesn't happen. Point in case is Michigan - NC tonight. Michigan is pretty good. Is NC absolute trash? Nope, one of those games. The team didn't play well last night, and several of the players we would expect to put up good numbers didn't.............and they still won.

Thread is "Cook is not NBA material". Neither were Jess Settles, Kenyon Murray or Aaron White, but those guys all helped Iowa win a bunch of basketball games.
It's relevant because this basketball player tested the NBA "waters" and has clear NBA aspirations. Who are you to dictate whether or not this is discussed? It's relevant like it was for several months within the Hawkeye media community. Check yourself a little. Let the conversations roll. Because that's all they are - conversations.

He really does need to stay next year to have any sort of chance. Dude has to learn to dribble and shoot better because he's a three in the league.

Not so sure about that either, What exactly is his offense? dunking?

The nba would play him at the 5. Setting screens and catching lobs is all the offense a 5 needs in the nba.

However, his only shot of making the nba is if he can switch screens on defense. Anybody who can half way guard the rim, rebound and still be able to switch onto a pg will make the nba right now.

Hes a 5 or nothing. They told him that. Nba is quickly trending towards having no actual post players.

Clint Capela is the prototype nba 5 now.

Cook has been playing significantly better on the defensive end most of the time this year. Our defense is the main improvement from last year, not the offense.
