Corby

Good announcing! He sees moves coming before they come
Well heck he tries to call them all, when he’s wrong he just says the wrestler missed it. He should calm down and call it when it happens. He’s not bad by any means. I’m hoping he pulls out “an illegal fist to the back” call for this next dual.

He's good. And Fretwell is fully caffeinated. Hilarious. "Tape his face up and put him back out there." Love how both of them talk through positions.

I liked this guy! He really knew the Wrestlers well and sure was prophetic in Young’s 2nd match. He was a bit more technical than I like, I felt like I was back in the wrestling room. I almost took a knee a few times out of habit.

Ironside will always be my favorite.

Really knew the wrestlers go to moves. Seemed to be pulling for the Hawks in alot of the matches, that didnt hurt him any with me even though I know that he knows it was like 95% Hawk fans tuned in vs the 5% lehigh/CMU fans. Also, like someone else said, the message board comment after Murins loss was funny but goes to show they do watch our forums.

A little annoying, but not as bad as some on here were making him out to be.
This has to be a joke thread right? I went to take a dump in the middle of a match and when I got back he was still on the same sentence.

Non stop, fill every second with his voice, you all have to be joking about liking his call.

I am sure he is a nice guy and he certainly knows a ton about wrestling, he just needs to realize he is doing pbp with video, not on the radio. Not sure I need the second by second detail of each guys hand movements and a running count on how much time is left in the period. "27 seconds left, now 25, quickly approaching 20...."

I’m all Neo. He needs to do like anyone that wants to be good at their job and learn from critiques. Slow er down and quit talking about yourself man.. and for god sake silence isn’t always bad…. and (last and) quit focusing on riding time! You’d think listening it determined the winner completely. I do like how he did seem to be a hawk homer. I am really pulling for others to do well in broadcasting wrestling so hopefully rokfin continues coverage.

This 100%...

He grew on me the more I listened.

The “see I told you so” stuff got a little old when he did predict something right. Like predicting a HWT match to be a 1 takedown match. Lol.

I feel ya. I am probably being a little bit of a dick but it was just a lot. Like previously stated, needs some polish.

Concur. The HWT prediction stuff was a bit silly. Made himself out to be Nostradamus-like. LOL. But still liked the job he did.

Yep, especially talking about how many meets/matches he'd covered throughout the day. That said, it sure is nice having someone with that kind of knowledge covering the meets. He's not Jim Gibbons, Tim Johnson and Sparks, but I was still impressed.

No shit!

There are parts of his call I liked, and parts I did not. I would agree he needs to let there be a little more silent time but he certainly knows his stuff. I could do without the constant reminders that this was his 6th match for the day too. Solid B from me.

I thought he did fine. Too chatty at times and seemed to rather keep repeating himself vs having there be any silence at all. Appreciated his knowledge of positions, moves, wrestlers, etc. Wish he would've stopped trying to guess what was going to happen and instead focus on what was actually happening. Overall I think he did well, just needs to refine and polish a little bit.

I will say that my wife, who doesn't follow/understand wrestling all that much (though she does enjoy coming to meets with me), was laughing the whole time wishing he would just shut the hell up. She found him incredibly annoying

This is hilarious. I had the exact same situation happen with my gf. She thought it was a joke listening to him. But she also thought he said "shit wizard" when he actually said shin wizzer so that got it off to a rough start.

i thought he was solid. it’s not an easy thing to do and he’s a beginner. his knowledge is a big plus. if i had some constructive criticism, it would be to cut down the talking about 25%. it’s not a podcast, so you don’t need to fill every second. you can let the action dictate when you need to speak. overall solid. it’s always a matter of personal taste and you can’t please everybody.

I called dozens of HS meets in the Eastern Iowa region for a few years there. It was a pretty fun experience once I was able to keep my nerves and emotions under control. Would love to do more of them. Maybe someday if I can grow The Pin Doctors to where I’d like it to be.

When I first started doing those, there was a temptation to over-elaborate some of the details of the match in terms of the technique that was being used… I don’t know why, I think it was my subconscious need to try and “prove” to the wrestling community that I was some sort of “wrestling expert” that knew what I was talking about. In time, though, it became clear that the majority of listeners couldn’t care less about the fine technical details of what you are calling and they are more concerned with the time, the match score, the team score, the wrestler’s background info leading into the match, etc…

This guy is doing a fine job and will get better as time goes on and as he gets the chance to more accurately “know” his audience. Sometimes it’s a tough thing to realize that your audience isn’t as die-hard about the sport as you may be… so for some, it may take some self-reminders to call the action as if they are talking to the common spectator, not a die-hard.

Just my 2 cents.

The commentators should not distract from the action on the mat. Corby's incessant talking is a distraction. Take a breath and stop trying to impress with your technical knowledge - which wasn't always correct. Many of us understand the technique and what the wrestlers "should" do in certain positions and do not need every situation explained to us. I would think for a watcher who is not a coach or super fan Corby's constant chatter about technique would be off-putting.

It was difficult for me to enjoy the matches with his blabber.

Appreciate all the feedback guys. Was my first time ever calling a college dual. I have commentated a handful of times and enjoy it. Doing it by yourself you feel like dead air isn't good. I needed to talk less no doubt and call it like TV not radio. I reached out to a few broadcasters that I respect and they gave me some good feedback. Your never gonna make everyone happy . I like announcers who tell me things to look for and what could happen. So naturally that's how I deliver. Its not for everyone but overall the feedback was positive. Yesterday I felt I did a better job at not predicting things as much. Also I was watching a monitor and calling the action and it didn't have the score on it all the time so I wasn't aware if you had it on the screen at home so I kept saying it for you guys at home. I know that was annoying to most sorry about that just didn't want you at home not to know the score. Was told later that they were up for you guys all the time.

Wow good for you coming on here that takes a ton of guts man. Watched everything the last few days with my dad. Flipped between mats a lot. I agree with a lot of the feedback you have been provided here. I think it really added something when you were working with someone. I think you improved day 1 to day 2. The production was overall not up to the standards of broadcast BTN or ESPN but I still really liked getting to watch everything and having some commentary. Keep it up and keep growing.

A two man booth is always a good idea. Last night I thought both of you did a great job. Thanks for visiting the cesspool and calling the matches.

First time? Then you did fine. When I first read this thread all I could think of is how bad some of the guys complaining about you would do if they were calling the action.

And if you offered these complainers $10 to listen to you call a match..............they'd complain that you didn't offer them $20. 💰

Yes was my first time calling college. About my 6th or 7th time I have commentated. I did both Stalemates as well as Night of Conflict and MO Border Brawl all new to me since October. I will tell you its not as easy as many think. Appreciate everyone and the feedback

Thank you. Listening to any 1 voice for 2 hours will annoy many. I felt like Cliff and I worked well together last night. We have never called a match together before. Cliff has been calling matches for many years he was a Flo original

I'd take Corby calling the Hawkeye Open if he can convince Nate Carr to tag along. Odd coming from an Iowa guy, but I really enjoyed him on the mic similar to how I enjoy John Smith in the same capacity.
