Only reason I care about this, is hopefully this means less money for PSU to spend on Suriano and Lee! Go Hawks!

Makes me wonder what's going on at Illinois...both Nikko and Jered are extremely close to Perry

I can infer good recruiting Karma from this news. Cortez is a stud, who will be at least as good for the Lions as Gulibon has been. No way is PSU going pick him up and continue the full court press on Suriano. They will both be 133 lbers. Doesn't make sense to me. I have to think it puts Iowa in the driver's seat for Suriano, if we weren't already.

Talk floating around is that Suriano is leaning PSU with us hanging around. That would mean he plans on being 125 for a good while as I don't see Cortez as a 141 ever at this point. That leaves us loading for Lee and hopefully we get him and J.Rent or Mejia grows to 141 to fit them all in. That would mean Hall, Lee and Happel are the biggest guys for us right now.

Talk in my neighborhood is that Suriano is an Iowa lean who took one more visit to PSU recently to insure he was making the right choice.

Cortez is a good get. Suriano down to Iowa and Nebraska?

Where is the good news that was supposed to be coming soon?

Obviously all speculation on my part, but Suriano looked huge last year at 126, and he doesn't look like he's any smaller this year. I find I hard to believe that between now and two years from now (when he's a college starter, he won't have outgrown the 125 weight class). At Iowa he'll be the guy (no doubt) at PSU he'll have to beat out Cortez (which I think he would) but why would PSU want that situation?

You have to wonder if PSU spent much money on Cortez. A kid leaves late in the summer and ends up somewhere where he has to sit a year. He may not have asked for much or he may not have had many options.

I am sure if Iowa could have gotten Cortez for cheap they would have taken him and then also went after Suriano and Lee etc. This does make Iowa seem like a better fit for Suriano though.

Hopefully for Lee too! He has black and gold written all over him!

I'm sure he had enough options to not have to settle for next to nothing. Out of state at PSU is not cheap.

The coaches at these schools obviously have more recruiting information than we posters (at a minimum, each coach knows his own recruiting preferences), but their overall information is still very imperfect. If you are Sanderson, and if you are unsure in your ability ultimately to land Suriano, maybe you offer a spot to Cortez simply because you are concerned about locking down 133 post-Gulibon with someone solid, and if you pass on Cortez and then lose out on Suriano, you are back to square one with options that are significantly inferior. Maybe the signing of Cortez says nothing about whether PSU is still interested in Suriano and has a chance of signing him, but I am skeptical and would bet that it bodes well for Iowa.

Hello?

Nick, this is Cael. How are you today?

Ah, fine. I guess….

Listen, we've been holding this spot for you but a new opportunity presented itself and I'm curious if we can count on you to join us next season?

I'm afraid not. But I'm really happy you guys have a plan that doesn't include me.

Hey, Willie, this is Cael. Just wanted to let you know Cortez decided to transfer over to PSU…

Ha that's pretty good. Here's hoping to the Hawks hearing good news on Lee and Suriano soon.

I'm with az do not believe cortez>guliban, although g seems a little weak and I am no authority on cortez.

I am also in the camp that says JG will never be wrestling in the winners' bracket on Friday nite @ Nationals. He
is good, no doubt, but not top 4, imo.

You are right. It seems like he would have options. It still seems odd that he left Illinois so late. I bet there is quite a story there, that we will probably never know about.

Guilbon is no superstar but he is progressing just fine. He has developed a good motor and is putting on muscle for 141 potentially. I do see Guilbon finishing Top 4 if he can keep consistency, which has been his problem. Going into his senior year, Cortez was a certified stud but dropped a couple of matches in free and folk his senior year, most notably to Alber. Took some of the shine off of him. That said, I'd take him...but would rather have some version of Lee/Suriano or Lee/Meija. Let's face it, would have been very happy with Cortez to Iowa today but maybe that's my instant gratification speaking.

EDIT: Let's face it, Guilbon's issues are definitely first world for Cael. Having potential AA's for the first four weights is pretty sweet.

Jimmy Gulibon will never be Top 4 caliber with two years left, he was only able to finish 5th last year. Are you serious?
Hell yes, I'm serious. You do realize that's my opinion, right? You can disagree and in two years we will see who's right. And the disclaimer that I'll repeat is I said "winners' bracket" Fri. nite. That doesn't mean he can't come thru the backside and wrestle for 3/4th.

I have always been one to think a pennsilvania kid will always favor his home state team when the ship is sailing the right way! Factor in in-state tuition in a sport so limited with available money and there you have a leader to beat!

I have watched wrestling recruiting year after year with all of us drooling over kids who wear Iowa shirts and have grown up liking Iowa end up elsewhere when money started to get talked about. Im still optimistic as always but am also being realistic about the way we distribute money and how it sits with recruits in the end.

Im just hoping that when it comes to elite talents such as a couple of prospects that our coaches remember how two guys bonus points at tourney time propelled Penn St to a few titles!

The silliest things can change all that we have been hopefull for in recruiting. Iowa is certainly elite but coaches personalities, money, location and depth can change all in a heartbeat when it comes to a final decision. I will say we own the competing environment and light weight wrestling room! Hands down!

Why? Suriano is excellent. Not far at all behind Lee, if he is. No telling who will have the better career in college at this point. Same with Fix.
Agreed. All kinds of funny things happen on the way to becoming an NCAA Wrestling Legend...............................

I've found the best way is to see how it ends after 5 years of trying..................;)

Dude...Clark beat him...Dice, that was for Mitch.

Maybe Mitch meant Sat night...but I think he has the talent to get there so I'll disagree with him.

We could be worse off than having Suriano, Mejia and Renteria filling the first 2 weights. In fact if there was no Spencer Lee out there, a Mejia / Suriano 125/133 combo sounds awesome and even with him out there it does.

But here is the thing about Lee and why missing on him would hurt. It sounds like it is between Iowa and PSU and missing on him means he goes to PSU where they go from trying to fill a hole to having an almost can't miss 4 time All American type that Iowa will have their work cut out getting someone that can beat him, no matter how much better we are at coaching lightweights.

Now if he goes to Iowa, with their superior lightweight coaching, PSU will never find anyone to beat him that is for sure.

You give Mitch too much credit. In a later post he said he thinks he could lose early and wrestle back for 3/4. But before he says not Top 4 talent.

He's clueless. Fairly sure that he had no clue that Gulibon has already wrestled in the semis...and the funniest thing it was against Clark.

Maybe he can modify this to Saturday night and Top 2 talent if we give him a chance. But agree with you also - he's got enough talent. Anyone who watched his 2 matches with Clark last year knows that. Great matches, unfortunate they will not continue this rivalry. Maybe when seniors...
