Could we see a true freshman crack the lineup?

This week the guys talk about the Iowa vs Oklahoma State at Kinnick Stadium, Junior Worlds, what Iowa Hawkeye freshman is making strides, college and high school rumors and the next big match up at Night of Conflict.

If we ever do see a true freshman in the lineup, I don't think it'll happen until January of that season. I see no way Brands pulling a shirt for the first dual of the season.

Can send the freshman to more opens that way to get more matches.

id guess Maranelli will be the best chance next year at 165. 165 is turning into the old 149.

None of you agree with the guys saying it will be Turk? That weight makes the most sense. I think Andy Hamilton has said he thinks a true freshman could go at 141 this year. I think he was talking about Kemerer at the time, but still.

As opposed to the newer 157

lol good point but I think 165 is a bigger issue given the flock of 157 type recruits we just hauled in. I could easily see Sorenson or Grothus maybe cooper be a good 157. Im not wanting Sorny at 157 but saying for argument sake. However 165 has a lot riding on Padduck until Maranelli or maybe a Kaleb Young gets here. I guess im saying 157 is more fixable in a season?

But what I was kinda of hinting at is our last 165 AA was Morningstar. At least 157 had DSJ running the 4x AA guantlett at that weight. How long did it take for a 149 AA after Metcalf? 165 is even longer now and don't see it ending this year. Good news is I think in 2 years both could be fixed.

Sorny/Kem 157 could AA
A true FR Maranelli could AA 165.

Beating out Carton wont be easy for Turk. Carton might be the best conditioned kid on the team and Vince is getting used to wrestling in D1 let alone 7 min of Cartons motor.

But id like to see it. It would mean we got something special because even though I don't see Carton AA'ing, he certainly is good enough to be in that 9-14 range of ranked guys.

Coming into this season, Iowa's longest AA droughts were at 149 and 165. Sorensen ended the 149 drought going back to 2010

Sorensen has said he was going at 149 this year at the Kinnick press conference, so cross him off the 157 list. Hoping Brody is handling his weight well for a 141 run.

Well that's what I am saying. Tony says on the podcast it would surprise you who Turk is able to take down in the room which suggests this kid can really go on his feet. Carton can have a great motor, but if Turk can take him down and control him it neutralizes that ability.

Stop it, just stop it. Your getting me all antsy now. I'm trying to be glass half empty here!

I thought the biggest news of this podcast was everyone thought that Lee was OURS to lose and Suriano was a lean towards the Hawks. Damn I really hope that's the case. Let's just make Xmas come in October and have Hall join the recruiting class as well!

Also with Turk performing that well I wonder how much influence that has on recruiting Happel. Good to hear Happel is leaning Iowa/UNI too.

I would guess that their inside info on this is about as accurate as yours and mine. Well at least mine lol. Or maybe a accurate as Tognettis.

Haha. I just felt like a big thing from the podcast is being missed. If Turk is taking down guys like Clark or Sorensen (for example) we may have something!

After it is all said and done this class may be a great one. They have 4 very promising guys in Turk, Kemerer, Wilcke & Woodard and a BOATLOAD of sleeper types. If Brands is able to stagger this type of class with say next year a small class of high profile guys I like where he is going.

I don't think I'd throw Woodard in with those guys.. he's more of a sleeper. Plus I think Holloway > Wilcke

If Turk improves so much in the room that he is clearly the best 141 in the room, I'd like to throw him out there. Although I'm sure some actual college competition will need to take place to judge that.

But what I don't want to happen is Grothus and Sorensen battling for 149 early on, Turk wins the 141 spot early on, burns the redshirt and wrestles. Then Grothus loses to Sorensen and moves down to 141 and bumps turk out, thus wasting a year of his eligibility. So if we start him as a true freshman i'd hope that TnT are pretty darn sure that he'll be the starter in Iowa City for the B1G's.

Or, Brody can start cutting and give Vince his redshirt. I don't like the idea of a Freshman not shirting unless they are A)Extremely good B)Have their shit together scholastically

If Brody can make 141 and still have the energy for a three day tournament then I think we are the favorite next year to win the title. If not PSU/OSU our the favorites.

I don't see any way this is a plausible scenario.

I think in all likelihood the decision to start Turk would come after the Midlands. To start the year Iowa has Okie State, Cornell College, Iowa Central, Maryland, Grand Canyon, ISU, South Dakota State, and Rutgers. That's plenty of time to send Turk to 2-3 opens with the only big duals he is missing is Okie State, ISU, and SDSU.

The second half of the season is a grind anyway. I don't think Brands would pull a redshirt for the first dual, like Greg/andegre said up top, it probably won't be until January, but it still could be a big deal.

If Iowa want to compete for team title, they can't have holes - especially since there's not going to be dominating type scorer.

Here is how I'd rank them:

Slim to none:
Vince Turk 141: ***Only if he can beat Carton by good margin.
Mike Kemerer 157 ***Only if Sorensen and Grothus both stay at 149(or Grothus goes 141), and he beats Cooper by good margin.

None:
Steven Holloway 197
Cash Wilcke 184
Paul Glynn (IA), 133lbs
Keegan Shaw (IA), 141lbs
Jeren Glosser (IA), 141/149lbs
Aaron Meyer (IA), 149lbs
Danny Murphy (CO), 149/157lbs
Matt Wempen (IA), 149/157lbs
Joey Gunther (IL), 157/165lbs
Jacob Woodard (IA), 157/165lbs
Cole Erickson (IA), 165lbs
Jeremiah Moody (WI), 165lbs

I hadn't seen Turk until this thread. There's video of him out there wrestling Kolodzik and Max Thompson. He's explosive. If Kolodzik is a top 10 recruit...Turk is right there. After watching their match...I think Turk may have more upside.

Bottom line win a wrestle off and open tourneys then we'll see.

With that in mind when is wrestle offs?!

I don't know the dates but they really don't matter unless its a lopsided beating. If Carton and Turk are close they will keep the redshirt on and see how the Midlands shake out. Midlands unattached is where you will win that spot.

I will say this knowing Brands, he will favor the more active guy to start even if hes barely losing to a lesser active guy. . You can build on that. Like Ramos over Ty Clark for example.

Not saying Carton isn't active. More or less that if they are close and both active it will be Carton. If Carton is playing D for 7 min and waiting then the door will be wide open. I haven't seen a lot of Carton but he isn't the stall type.

I am almost expecting to see Sorenson and Grothus both at 49 which will make me cuss as I shake my head! Its none of my business though how it all pans out! Im going to just hope for the best for all involved and be happy when wrestling is upon us once again.

I agree that's just nonsense but I also see NO WAY Brody makes 141. The kid wrestled 145 I believe senior year in high school.

FWIW, McDonough wrestled 130 in HS and then held down 125 for 4 years, sort of 5 years actually, in college. So the 145 to 141 drop, all by itself, is not enough info for us fans on "the outside" of the room to say for sure...either way.

It remains to be seen whether or not Brody can hold 141 for his final season in college...but if he can, it isn't as if something too strange, that has never been done before, would be taking place.

didnt a well respected poster on this board say about a month or two ago that He talked to Brody personally and asked him what he was doing next year? and his answer was 149 and if he doesn't win the spot he will go 141? If that's the case Turk takes the shirt because I don't believe he beats Brody.
