Very few coaches have the technical knowledge of wrestling that either Tom, or[/I] Terry (or Tom and[/I] Terry) possess. Anyone who has been in the Iowa wrestling room or a TnT clinic should be aware of the level of expertise these guys have acquired over the years. Moreover they both have the ability to communicate technique/skills/strategy with the young men in the program. The University of Iowa wrestling program certainly faces a number of constraints when recruiting, as do all intercollegiate sports. The Iowa coaches are looking for kids who have demonstrated talent, and who are committed to doing the extremely hard work in the room that develops competitive wrestlers. That is the Iowa recruiting and coaching philosophy.
Anyone who watched the Iowa kids at the recently completed Big Ten wrestling tournament (or the recently completed Big Ten season) must certainly be mindful that these kids have paid their dues in the wrestling room. It is well understood that the expectations of Iowa wrestling are great, and that the outcome of some matches may have been a letdown. Nonetheless the Hawkeyes left it all on the mat. And they did so albeit some athletes had troublesome injuries to deal with.
Critics on this board who disparage the Iowa coaching staff or the Iowa wrestlers simply don't know that of which they speak, or their ability to observe and dissect individual wrestling performance is severely limited. Opponents who defeated Iowa wrestlers will unquestionably be in the 'hunt' during the NCAA finals, as will the University of Iowa wrestling team. GO HAWKS.
A short personal observation: Isaiah Martinez's performance against Dylan Ness was stunning. That match was probably the most exciting final bout of the tournament. I have believed for some time that Martinez was the most talented young wrestler in college. He proved it Sunday.
