Very few coaches have the technical knowledge of wrestling that either Tom, or[/I] Terry (or Tom and[/I] Terry) possess. Anyone who has been in the Iowa wrestling room or a TnT clinic should be aware of the level of expertise these guys have acquired over the years. Moreover they both have the ability to communicate technique/skills/strategy with the young men in the program. The University of Iowa wrestling program certainly faces a number of constraints when recruiting, as do all intercollegiate sports. The Iowa coaches are looking for kids who have demonstrated talent, and who are committed to doing the extremely hard work in the room that develops competitive wrestlers. That is the Iowa recruiting and coaching philosophy.

Anyone who watched the Iowa kids at the recently completed Big Ten wrestling tournament (or the recently completed Big Ten season) must certainly be mindful that these kids have paid their dues in the wrestling room. It is well understood that the expectations of Iowa wrestling are great, and that the outcome of some matches may have been a letdown. Nonetheless the Hawkeyes left it all on the mat. And they did so albeit some athletes had troublesome injuries to deal with.

Critics on this board who disparage the Iowa coaching staff or the Iowa wrestlers simply don't know that of which they speak, or their ability to observe and dissect individual wrestling performance is severely limited. Opponents who defeated Iowa wrestlers will unquestionably be in the 'hunt' during the NCAA finals, as will the University of Iowa wrestling team. GO HAWKS.

A short personal observation: Isaiah Martinez's performance against Dylan Ness was stunning. That match was probably the most exciting final bout of the tournament. I have believed for some time that Martinez was the most talented young wrestler in college. He proved it Sunday.

Great post. I agree that way too many on this board are quick to go negative and start dispensing their "expert" opinions on the faults in each of our wrestlers and coaches. It is bush league. I am not saying anyone is completely exempt from criticism. But, at least take the time to think through your arguments and consider the work these individuals put in before vomiting out your frustrations.

I mean think about how pathetic some of you are. You sit and listen or watch the wrestling while reclining on your lay-z-boy and dispense your word vomit of criticism directed at these guys who endure countless hours of pushing themselves to their absolute limits and beyond. I mean, REALLY? Do you not see the problem with that? You have done nothing and you criticize as if these athletes owe you something and have let you down. Why not just enjoy the incredible effort, talent, and determination of our guys? And if it doesn't go their way, give them a break - they don't owe any of us a damn thing.

Agreed that Tom and Terry know more about wrestling that anyone here ever will. Agreed that the kids wrestling know more about self-sacrifice than 99% of posters here. Disagree that either the coaching staff or the athletes are beyond reproach. SOME of the criticism on here is very valid and is echoed by Brands himself. I'm sorry, but the whole they know more than you do stuff so they are beyond reproach is a bit of a straw man argument. I big thing I don't like seeing is the personal attacks against student-athletes but you will get far worse on other boards. Go Hawks.

I would like to say that any criticism I may have posted is only to explain the reason the Hawks are a top team in the nation and not THE TOP TEAM year in and year out. I hope I have been clear that they have accomplished great things and I have a deep respect for the kids and the staff.

I would like to think my suggestions should be taken as tweaking the Hawks system. I do not think they need a total overhaul. There is a lot of good things that come out of that room and TnT do a lot for the sport and for those kids. I am in no way an expert and I hope it does not seem like I am trying to be an expert.

Great post Burk! Hawks are always battling hard regardless of anything and we need to get behind them 100%.

I also agree that Imar's performance was stunning; to turn some of those crazy scrambles his way and all of that against the master scrambler, Ness, was very impressive.

This is wonderful. After every major wrestling event, posters appear out of nowhere to trash the team and coaches. Now we're getting lectures from the same bunch.

There is a big difference between disparaging the efforts of individual wrestlers and voicing an opinion that the coaching staff is not recruiting top wrestlers and helping them meet their maximum potential.

You would do well to not group them all together.

Burk, I am going to cheer for the Hawkeyes regardless who the coach is or the who the wrestler is on the mat. While individual experience and understanding varies with each poster I would suggest that there is a collective observation that most fans hold - this team's offense has been and is lacking. The lack of offense has occurred at the same time other schools are displaying more success in that area. While individual talent does have something to do with that there does seem to be more. To say that the dedication displayed by coaches and wrestlers is so great that it is above reproach is a bit too much. It is fair to ask - what is the problem with Iowa not scoring and in the case of some - not at all?

I agree there are some people that are harsh and go off too hard. However, this site might be one of the last places on the rival forum that has not fallen off entirely into a never ending pissing contest. The majority of regular posters know their stuff pretty well I find that I respect their points even if they are making critical comments towards any part of the program.

The football board would not suit you well....

I try to never bash on the wrestlers as I know the sacrifices they make to get where they are. I have expressed my displeasure with the job being done to develop the middle of our line up. I may not know as much as TnT but I am surely not a noob by any stretch of the imagination. You won't stop me from voicing my opinion.

I agree with the OP to a certain point.

I wouldnt trade the Brands for anyone and not questiong them in the practice room but I certainly can voice my opinion over the recruting slump from Clarks class untill the recent Kemmerer sighning. IMO very lackluster and nothing other than Sorenson to show for 3 years. Ok maybe Grothus. But point being if this staff just lands one Isiah martinez or any real good 157/165 guy then Iowa walks away with the title next week. Not even close.

Instead that recruiting letdown has them starting Mike Kelly. Not the kids fault so i agree lets not rip him. Liek a QB problem, its the darn coach who is starting him.

Take Moore for example. The staff knew he had a shoulder problem back in HS. Sure it can go away but like a hamstring it never really does and can bite you later on. Like buying a car with a salvage title...you know it could break down on you at some point right?I say thise because its not Moores fault he is hurt and trying his arse off with one shoulder and one knee left. My issue is the staff put us ina situation where even the back ups couldnt replace him? I mean the lackluster recruiting produced Rhoads or Thomsen or even padduck. None of these guys can beat out a one legged, one armed Moore?

Sad deal with Nick really, but even more said is our oother recruits cant even step up and say Ill get us some points. Wheres our James English?

So you can think the coaches are perfect. I will still call it like it is.Fair or unfair, they are not above critisicm.

I dont have to be caoching this team to see some problems. You can see less than stellar product from the recliner!

Can you imagine this board without criticism? Wouldn't it just be appreciation threads and talking about the weather?

LOL, yep!

It would be worse to stomach than working in corporate america and being forced to clap and laugh at the CEO when they give a speech. Some folks are just born kiss ups. I dont drink with those folks.
