Per our friends at IAwrestle and Takedown it looks like Schriever won a Tulsa National title. I am not exactly big into the youth scene, but I do know Schriever is highly rated for a middle school wrestler and that Tulsa Nationals are pretty big as far as accomplishments go. My question is does anyone know much about him? Like what high school is he going to go to? I know he works out with TJ Sebolt, but I know some kids will travel a long way for club practice.

Who is offering the best deals these days? IC West seems to have lost their touch. Waverly is still active but not like they once were. Bettendorf, SEP or Davenport Assumption would seem to be the leaders. But with the Portillos moving on after this season it frees some things up so Clarion-Goldfield might be a dark horse.

More questions:

Who in their right mind enters an 8 year old in a national wrestling tournament?

Why is Flo running a 15 and under national tournament in the middle of wrestling season?

I wasn't trying to open a can of worms on high schools recruiting, I was just curious what part of the state he is from.

That isn't anywhere near as amusing. And you asked what high school he's going to attend, not where he's from. In his state those two questions are only loosely related when it comes to wrestlers.

But he's apparently from Mason City.

More this way :

They have taken over the TITLE sponsorship of this event, and it's called GREED. The Tulsa Nationals has taken place during this time for a long time now, and appears to be a permanent time frame moving forward.

Okay see I didn't know if he traveled to Mason City for the club, or if that was just where he worked out.

To your point won't he want to be able to work out with Sebolt? Hard time believing he would pick somewhere far away from that area if he does happen to move in the next year.

He is an 8th grader weighing around 85lbs and very talented. My guess is he and his twin brother will wrestle for Mason City, but not the 2016-17 year. (Just a guess) His Sebolt teammate Eric Faught went the same route.

A talented 8th grader that is 85 pounds is a lot of times an 8th grader two years in a row these days. Not saying that will be the case with this kid.

Or he will compete as an underweight freshman, i.e. Andrew Long. I believe Long on full feed weighed low-mid 90s and placed 8th at state. He was the 2005 Freestyle and Greco Cadet national champion at 84 lbs.

Hopefully,...some positive information for this thread.

I want to say he's won the triple crown last year, winning folkstyle, freestyle and greco national championships. The kids legit

Youth tournaments are very big. I was director at a large on in Texas way back and had Sebolt, Anson, and David Taylor as entries. The Tulsa Nationals attracts about 2500 kids.

Two things - SPOONER, you must mean Davenport Assumption (Pete Bush). Central hasn't been a factor in state wrestling for 40+ years (Class of '68, here). fleming24 - I don't know if it's greed on FLO's part, but I can tell you from first hand experience, every wrestling entity in America is begging for corporate sponsorships. Mine included.

I did mean Assumption so thank you for the correction.

As for Flo Nationals, I think I figured out why they are doing a 15U--for those "redshirts" who are already 15 but in 8th grade currently.

It covers them too. 15 and under also covers 13/14 year olds as well as the undersized 15/unders that don't compete for a high school team.

Tulsa (Flo Nationals) has been a big deal for many years in youth wrestling. I'm not sure if its changed but they had the brilliant idea of providing a lot of pomp/circumstance and huge trophies to winners of their Roller series. They had a point system to assign to placers of various tournaments which resulted in 2000+ entries in tournaments chasing points. I knew of guys dropping serious dough to drag 6yr olds (don't know if they still do but they had a 6/under division) across the country to be in brackets they knew would only have a handful of kids so that they could win the series. I know there have been gripes in the past about Flo covering more youth and high school tournaments than college and senior level events but they knew the money was wherever the most crazy parents were. I assume Flo pays a fee to the Roller series organizers to broadcast which in turn earns them subscribers looking to watch their nephews/cousins/sons/grandchildren (remember 2000+ participants).
Back to the reason there is a 15/under division. When you're trying to make money you wanna be as inclusive as possible.

Back in my day the Oklahoma High School kids could wrestle in it. You would see kids that were Freshman and Sophomores in your brackets. Also, the way they do age groups is funny. Essentially, kids could be like 15.5 and still wrestle in it. I remember drawing Justin Porter like 2nd or 3rd round my 8th grade year and he was already a HS state champion.

I personally don't see anything wrong w Flow sponsoring or promoting this tournament. Besides Fargo, it's probably the most interesting youth national tournament in the country.

How else are they to know about incoming freshmen without sponsoring and "tracking" these large youth tournaments?

Yea, I don't know if the rule changed but they used to allow hs kids in the tournament. Illinois like most states didn't allow hs school kids to compete at Tulsa because it wasn't sanctioned by the national hs association.
But again the event organizers didn't care what state you were from because inclusiveness and profits went hand and hand.

I know Cullan and Max Magayna from Iowa both won the triple crown last year. My six y/o won a nation championship last year. What's wrong with wrestling national tournaments? I know Cullan had a shoulder injury already. If their is a way to get burned out, it's wrestling for TJ Sebolt.

Cullan will probably repeat 8th grade next year which I think is a complete joke. This holding back kids for wrestling is getting ridiculous. As for where he'll go to school, he won't be leaving Sebolt's side I can almost guarantee that. Cullan is TJ's "golden boy". He's the kid that got him on the map as a coach and now has a good lineup of young kids. However, these kids (mostly 3rd, 4th, 5th graders) practice and compete WAY too much.

Now, as far as a wrestler, young Schriever is legit. Nowadays you can seriously find a "National" tournament almost every weekend and parent's love saying "my kid's a National Champ", but it really doesn't mean much. Cullan has gone to some of the toughest tournaments in the country and he comes out on top. Tulsa doesn't draw a lot of East coast kids but he's faced them at other tournaments.

Tj himself was the first one I can remember staying back a year so that he could be big enough for 103. He was home schooled so I doubt it was to tough to hold him back a year. I wrestled on some dual teams with him when we were younger and he was always a very nice kid but just a little odd.

No matter what he's doing he has a hell of a youth team. He's going to make some hs coach very happy someday.

Yeah, I read on the flyer you get wrestle in the 8U division as long as you didn't turn 9 by September 15th.

So your 6 year old drove himself to the national tournament? If so, I'm finally impressed.

My wife took him. I wasn't there. She takes him to all the big tourneys. She is a wrestling freak, hasn't missed the NCAAs for twenty years. He was on the Iowa Nuway team in Indiana...I was at home.

Hawkster is correct there is nationial tourney every week, he was bound to win one of them. Cullan can win them all though. That wasn't the case a couple years ago.

It's always fun to have him in my oldest's bracket even though my kid is a year younger. You have to go to national tourneys if you want competition. These mom and pops in Iowa don't do anything for my kids. You're lucky to have them wrestle over 30 seconds a match. Waste of time and money. It's just trophy hunting.

My son's best friend Evan Yant of Waverly is gaining on Cullan, but he'll outgrow him probably. He doesn't cut yet so he is actually GROWING. If not he WILL beat him. He knows anything you do now doesn't matter until high school.

Oh so you're wife took him. And you have nothing to say about it and nothing to do with it. Gotcha.

Nothing to say about it except when he posts on seemingly every third thread or so here. At least that is the way it feels. Generally followed by some comment bashing the always less than competitive level of wrestling to be found in Iowa. That is just how I see it. I could be wrong though.

My son is friends with Cullan. No talk of repeating 8th grade. Probably wrestle for Dusty at MC, but you never know with wrestlers. Strong ties to Sebolt. Kid has done all the big national tourneys (the actual invite ones) and hasn't lost in at least a couple years. We will see how much he grows. There are some 17 year old 115lb kids droppibg to 103. That's a big size and age difference, but Cullan is as good as Iowa 8th grader in a long time. Big Iowa Fan.
