Went to the game today. Wow.

Got home and was curious to see how Stanley's stats stand after today, and how they compare to previous Hawks QBs. Basically, with an 18-4 TD/INT ratio and 1721 yards through 8 games, he's on pace to have one of the most statistically awesome seasons any Iowa QB has ever had.

This we all know.

But while diving into College Football I spotted something curious. They break TD passes down by these points in the game:

Winning by 15+
Winning by 8-14
Winning by 1-7
Tied
Losing by 1-7
Losing by 8-14
Losing by 15+

10 of Stanley's 18 TD passes have come when Iowa is trailing by 1-7 points. Go back through Iowa's last 8-9 years and that is a disproportionately awesome amount of TDs thrown in this timeframe.

So what does it mean?

Maybe nothing. But... I say it means Stanley is throwing touchdowns at the MOST important times.

Sure, you can throw 10 TDs in a game like Lamar Jackson when your team is up three scores against a turd team, or you can throw some garbage time TDs when your team is getting smoked.... but to have an 18-4 TD/INT rating with 10 of those TDs coming when you're down one score? That says to me Stanley is earning every damn TD he's throwing this year as they're happening in critical points of the game. Then today he showed he knows how to pile it on when things are rolling.

tl;dr Nate Stanley is going to wreck the Iowa record books

He is so incredibly strong too. Reminds me of Big Ben how he can stand in there, take a hit and defenders kind of bounce off him.
He has the same size and strength. I think the line has finally gelled giving him time to throw, he now has the confidence to stand in the pocket, he makes great choices with the ball (at least 2/4 of his picks were the receivers fault), and when he pulls the trigger he has a big time arm to fit it in tight spaces not allowing defenders to make a play on it.

Funny how some were jumping all over this kid earlier in the season and refused to see his high upside. I will say it again now Stanley has the tools to become a top 3 all-time QB at Iowa.
i don't recall too many 'jumping all over' the kid, a lot were hoping he would clean up his deep ball misses and realized he was only playing in his first season and that would likely fix itself with experience.

i think the vast majority have been in the kid's corner all along.

I don't feel like going back and researching the comments from earlier this year but there were more than a few who suggested replacing him with Wiegers, even Mansell. These were your typical knee jerk fans posting after a loss though but I agree, a vast majority were able to see through the struggles.

I'm in this camp. For not knowing what the hell we were going to do for a passing game coming into the season, 22-2(+2) is damn impressive.

He left some points on the field by overthrowing some deep balls earlier in the season, but that back corner TD to Fant was a thing of beauty.

I think BF finally figured out that our TEs are a nightmare to cover and is going to shove that down opposing defenses until they show they can stop it.

We haven't had a QB this comfortable in the pocket in a long time. No frantic scrambles where you hope to god the balls gets launched into the stands rather than to a DB.

he is good. I've always said that. I have had an issue with his receivers and tight ends. they seemed to wake up yesterday and come alive suddenly. seems like hockensen and fant suddenly grew up and matured. I hope they can keep it up. I hope they dfon't go to wisky and have a let down after this much like osu did after penn st. these guys looked great, keep it up.

The TD where the Ohio State player was wrapped around his leg... Nate maintained composure and threw a bullet to Hockenson. That was sick and shows the type of player Iowa has at QB

On a day full of awesome plays, I think this one was my favorite. Looked like Nathan looked at him and did a little leg kick to kick the defender off and then rifled a pass right on target. It was a thing of beauty.
It reminded me of a little brother trying to tackle his bigger brother and the big brother not being fazed by it at all.

There was another defender coming at him from the left who was about to drill him and he got it away perfectly. That pass to Wadley, I believe in the 3rd was pretty amazing, too. How the hell did he know right where to throw it?

Stanley is a lot like Stanzi, when he makes a bad decision he forgets and moves on to the next play. another thing that Stanley does is he keeps throwing to the players that have either dropped or fumbled the ball away and this is another change we are seeing KF make letting these young players make mistakes and letting them continue getting the ball in critical phases of the game.

maybe this is the BF affect or maybe it is just KF changing his own philosophy.

Very impressed by Stanley's growth the last couple games, and not having drops by receivers helps that a lot. But his TD pass total is a bit skewed because we can't punch the ball in from inside the five by rushing. Rudock and Beathard recently, in addition to scrambling for several themselves, had Weisman and Daniels that were almost automatic down there. With Wadley not being a good short yardage back, we've had to rely on the short TD passes. I've never seen Iowa struggle like they have this year in goal line running. Still impressive for Stanley, but it's not a statistic that I expect to be duplicated in the future with Toren Young as the top back, he'll be able to run it in and we won't have to pass down there as often. That said, he'd also have one more TD pass had they not ruled Easley's TD a fumble at the goal line against North Texas.

I would go one step further and say Stanley has made very few bad decisions this season. It's almost entirely been physical mistakes (deep ball accuracy, high throws, behind WRs, drops).

The high step that got called back was also a screen pass but I think he threw it in from where they called it dead.
