Ohio State blew $20M on a Roster that Finished 4th in the B1G

$9.6 million

Oh, almost forgot........to Fran "Blew"

The article you linked highlights the fundamental flaw with all these numbers that get thrown around: they aren't official or verified. They are speculative and mostly fantasy. The numbers any player allegedly received usually increase each time someone stated them.
And I don't care what other people do with their money. If they choose to give it to an 18-year-old WR, so be it. It is totally legal today

And one COSTLY offseason move turned out to be with what they did at the QB position.

In the offseason, Ryan Day showed starting QB Kyle McCord the door in the favor of a transfer portal option that turned out to be Kansas State QB Will Howard.

McCord landed at Syracuse.

Yesterday, as Will Howard struggled in a loss to Michigan, throwing two costly interceptions, McCord was up in Syracuse out-dueling the nation's best quarterback, Cam Ward, in a thrilling comeback 42-38 win over #6 Miami.

Down 21-0 early in the second quarter, McCord erupted for 380 yards and three touchdowns on 26 of 36 passes.

When asked after the game about beating Miami while his former school Ohio State lost to Michigan yet again, McCord had the perfect response.

"Everything comes full circle," McCord said.

This season McCord passed for 4,326 yards, completed 66% of his passes, and had 29 TDs and 12 INTs for the Orange (9-3).

The OP needs to remember the immortal words of Yogi Berra,”It ain’t over ‘til it’s over”. It is “over” now and tOSU is the National Champion and that QB the Day took a chance on was in fact the team’s QB all season long. Looks like (this time) Day knew what he was doing. Football, like life is indeed fickle. Listening to others accomplishes NOTHING. Having a plan and persuing that plan sometimes leads to great success. And those who have the courage to make a plan and persue that plan and not change course are the real heroes in the world today. In this case, I congratulate Ryan Day for having the balls to stand up to his critics and follow his plan. A lot of coaches have a National Championship as their season’s goal…Day and his Bucks accomplished their goal. (Even though they finished 4th in the conference.)

From the Gazette in August 2024:

As the Swarm Collective looks to raise funds to compensate Hawkeye athletes via name, image and likeness, Heinrichs said “the price tags keep going up.” It’s at the point now that the men’s basketball price tag is “north of $1 million, closer to $1.5 million,” and football is “around $4 million.”

No wonder Kim is cutting Iowa income taxes!

There were behind the scenes conflicts that pushed Knowles to PSU.

Knowles didn't see eye to eye with DL coach Larry Johnson and how his DL was being used during the 1st half of the season and Day sided with Johnson. OSU offered Knowles a hefty raise but he was dead set on leaving for either OK or PSU.....both offered over $3 million with the rumor that he signed with PSU for almost $3.5 million making him the highest paid asst. in CF history

It's amazing how me using the word "blew" instead of "spent" 54 days ago in the thread title caused clowns like you so much angst.

Ohio State blew $20M on a Roster that Finished 4th in the B1G

vs

Ohio State spent $20M on a Roster that Finished 4th in the B1G

Hopefully you clowns are ok with this statement: Oregon blew $23M on a roster that only resulted in an Elite 8 (quarterfinal) finish in the College Football Playoff.
You know what you meant back in December; here's the CBS story you linked: "Ryan Day blew it with Kyle McCord ousting, offensive overhaul that came up short yet again versus Michigan"

We knew it, too.

You "blew" it. Own it.

We knew it, too.

You "blew" it. Own it.

Again, I own the fact that on Dec 1 (57 days ago), I simply stated that Ohio State blew/spent $20M on a roster that:

(1) finished 4th in the B1G;
(2) didn't beat Michigan at home as a heavy favorite;
(3) didn't qualify for the B1G Conference Championship game; and
(4) only received an 8 seed in the CFP
.

Ryan Day needed 24/7 police protection because of all of these failures. What I wrote on Dec 1 was all true and you know it.

It is simply stupid of you to come back now and say "I told you so" when everything I wrote on Dec 1st was true.

I also own the fact that I acknowledged on Dec 14 that Ohio State could go on a 4 game winning streak and who they'd have to likely beat to do that. I own the fact that I got Georgia wrong!!!

On Dec 14:

And yet, still could walk away with the Natty.
True; they could. And if they do, they will earn it. ;)

With the expanded playoff, #6 ranked Ohio State likely would have to beat these 4 teams in order to win the National Championship:

#7 ranked Tennessee (at home)
#1 ranked Oregon (who got a bye) in the Quarterfinals
#3 ranked Texas in the Semifinals
#2 ranked Georgia in the National Championship

I then commended Ohio State for circling the wagons and going on that 4 game winning streak to win the CFP.

So, you have obviously blown it with your "I told you so's;" we all know it.

Yep, you hit the nail on the head. In fact, their entire OL has been subpar for the last 2 to 3 years and it's cost them bigtime. In the past, OSU has had the depth to fix it........for whatever reason, not the case anymore

You wrote this on Dec 1st, too, dumb ass.

Ohio State's OL cost them big time, huh? They are National Champions, dumb ass.

You BLEW it with this post.

Fran…your grace under fire is admirable. You are to be congratulated for standing up and taking it like a man.
However, as heroic your courage might be, it is a distant second to Roberto DiVicenzo’s “I am such a stupid!” After he signed an incorrect scorecard at The Masters, allowing Bob Goalby to win the championship in 1968.
(Without looking, who was the player that was keeping DiVicenzo’s score that day?)

I mean why not be a head coach somewhere?

Buy? They only brought in 6 Portal Transfers ...... the rest of the OSU NC lineup (90%) was made up of their annual top 3 or 4 recruiting classes. Give them credit. They've been an annual B1G-NC contender for several decades and it's not like NIL money suddenly put them in this position. They've only had 2 losing seasons going back to the early 1960s
You don't believe that they paid players to stay? THey spent 20 million, that wasn't on 6 portals.

Lots of money being blown to win championships.

On Dec 1 Ohio State was in the news for blowing $20M on a roster that finished 4th in the B1G.

Oregon blew $23M on a roster that only made the Elite 8 (quarterfinals) of the CFP.

I wonder how much Iowa blew for that 8-5 record. Anyone know?
You omitted that OSU "blew" 20million on being national champions along with placing 4th in the BIG. Also, Oregon "blew" 23m on placing 1st in the BIG and bowing out of the CFP in the 2nd round (all but one underdog won during the playoff and that was INdiana).

On Dec 1st, when this thread was started, Ohio State had not yet won the National Championship. Their only "accomplishment" to that point was that 4th place finish in the B1G.

I have brought up several times that Oregon spent/blew $23M on a roster that only advanced to the quarterfinals of the CFP.

18 team conference

9 conference games

W-L standings in conference no longer matter or say anything about who is best in the league. It is who has the easiest schedule.

The only thing we can say for sure is the Big Ten is better than the SEC.

In fairness, tOSU defeated 6 of tge Top 8 rated teams in the nation to win their NC. Give the Devil its due.

A historic run for sure. I would say the best 4 teams were in the same part of the bracket which was a crime against Oregon. They should have gotten Penn St's draw.

I realize that everyone is slamming OSU right now....Their weakness - a bozo for a HC

You posted both of these gems on December 1st, dumb ass.

#4 ranked Penn State (the 6 seed) did get a very favorable draw. I would imagine that how they seed the selected teams will eventually get tweaked.

I’d rather spend money buying players than having to defend racial and sexual discrimination lawsuits. Ohio State is beating Iowa at basketball, football and in that department. Although they can’t touch us in wrestling!
