D.J. Harvey headed to Vanderbilt

That is a serious gamble, going with a coach with zero college experience. But I suppose the mystic of playing for Stackhouse must be something... However it is a big risk on ones career.

Iowa on the other hand will be good, for certain. Hopefully very good-to-great!

I would have been shocked if Coach McCaffery had landed this guy. I figured Coach Stackhouse would win this recruiting battle; after all, Nashville or Iowa City.

Why would it have been shocking? We are competing for a recruit against a first-time coach and a program coming off 9-23. And the answer from the recruit is thanks but no thanks. Wow.

Which is why we don’t need to go with a mid-major replacement for Fran when that time comes! You have to give it up to both the Nebraska and Vandy AD’s. The former, not settling for a “seen one, seen them all” mid major coach. The latter, thinking outside the box on someone who can bring in some talent despite the high academic requirements. Iowa b-ball continues to be the 30 year train wreck.

You are quite the drama queen.

I am disappointed. I thought we could land this guy over a 9-23 Vanderbilt team. If the Hauser brothers pass us over, well, I don't even want to think about that.

Somewhat disappointing as it appeared he could have been a contributor down the road.
I'm more interested in the short term, meaning adding one or two players for the upcoming season. I don't expect it to happen, but I'll keep hoping until there's no chance.

That’s how I feel as well. We’ve lost some really good talent with the Cook and Moss departures. It would be nice to plug the holes with experienced talent.

This will add a bit of pressure to the 2020 recruiting cycle. If Fran can’t close the deal with His top 3 or 4 realistic guys while needing to fill up to 5 spots, things could get interesting. Hopefully we will not be in a position where we are scrambling to fill spots. I was hoping for at least one transfer to sit out to help balance the classes out a bit.

Fran is not a bad recruiter (certainly not a good one), but he will never be able to recruit enough talent to make it past the first weekend of the NCAA tourney.

Hasn't done it in nine years-he isn't gonna suddenly turn into a great recruiter now.

True enough. Iowa has had one great recruiter in the last 50 years - George Raveling. They've had two coaches with a track record of taking "good" talent to darned good success - Lute and Dr. Tom.

Someday, perhaps the Hawks will stumble across a guy that can do both.

I think you could argue that Lute could do both but we will never know since he didnt stick around. He was just coming into his own so you have to think recruiting would have picked up as well. Also, we had a new facility to sell along with going to a final 4 recently. You might have seen an Izzo type situation in IC if he would have stayed.

Notre Dame transfer D.J. Harvey picks Vanderbilt over Iowa after visiting both schools last week.

I have seen several comments questioning Fran's ability to recruit. From someone that has been on the receiving end of his pitch, I would disagree. Fran and staff provided us w/ a very compelling and convincing description of the program, vision and where DJ would fit and how he would contribute. The visit was great and the connection he and coach established was notable considering the limited amount of time in recruiting process.

I would say DJ struggled w/ this decision more than the decision out off high school to go to Notre Dame. He was really torn and had to do some real soul searching. Choosing a school is a huge decision for these young men that has to balance academics, the basketball program, family situation, culture, personal goals...it's not always just a basketball decision. I guess my message is, DJ has been lucky enough to have been recruited by many schools but the Iowa staff did a tremendous job in comparison. In other words, the decision was not based on anything the staff "didn't do" but on the value proposition criteria we set out as family. My hat's off to Coach Fran and staff...they presented an excellent program and vision.

Agree about Lute - he was the full package. He brought Iowa out of the darkness and into the light, kinda like Fran, but I think he would have continued to build. Fran, at Iowa, may have sort of peaked.
