The D needs to pick it up.......I'm guessing they are staying pretty vanilla this game but they allowing the run AND not getting much pressure on the QB........Against Miami of Ohio........Not in a panic but it would be nice to see a dominant defensive series here pretty soon.......

The defense will improve week to week. Very basic game plan today. Not sure they have even blitzed more than a couple of times. Mabin looks like Mabin - inconsistent as usual.....

Lost Josey Jewell in the first 5 minutes, and Parker Hesse. That is probably why Iowa is only rushing 4 every play.

In my opinion the D looks good and hard hitting. 2 sacks almost 3rd negated from a penalty and FF from Nelson so far. First game what more can you expect.

That was a piss poor defensive effort. They really picked on Bower and at times Synder. Bower did not fill the hole and is a weak tackler. I had major concerns about Bower being a surprise starter and unfortunately they were confirmed. Synder needs to learn how to wrap. Mabin got picked on as well but there was ZERO pass rush outside of A Nelson.

Play like this and it's a 6-6 or 7-5 like we saw for 5 years.

Defense got worked! As far as the new guys in today I thought the DEs played well. LBs really struggled, they were soft up the middle and late in coverage. Mabin with a rough day, Snyder out of position in passing situations (but did well in run support). Overall team defense was pretty dang pathetic though

Genuinely dislike the defensive game plan from Vanilla Phil -- zero blitzes doesn't work when they lack a front four that can't get consistent pressure on the opposing QB

You guys need to relax. It's something to build on and they got a w. Our D wasn't as good as I thought it would be but our O was actually a little better. Don't forget we have shit the bed often in the ooc and this team looks like they will be able to take care of buisness even on an off day.

We still won by 20. Why put on film our preferred blitzes?
Problem with that is every opponent already knows Iowa's blitz packages.

Outside of Anthony Nelson, Iowa generated no pressure at all on the Miami QB. When that is the case, a D-Coordinator needs to make some adjustments by blitzing.

I doubt Iowa is going to do much new blitz wise vs past year's under Parker. Getting Jewel back will help as he is effective when the send him on blitz and is strong against the run.

Yeah, I didn't expect a super pass rush, but a more stout run defense is definitely needed.

Look at all you couch defensive coordinator's crying already. It's just the first game and Iowa looked like they were playing a vanilla defense all game after Kirk told them to tone it down after the hard hitting 1st qtr imo. Nelson looks like a real stud. And Miami hardly tested King at all. Mabin better buckle up because every team will be gunnin for him.

If we pounded them 45-0, the complainers would say it didn't matter because they suck.

Iowa won by 24 to move to 1-0. There are things to clean up, but that is always the case.

Beat State! Drop them to 0-2.

Alot of you naysayers get off the couch and suit up to see if you would do better. Oh wait....most of you washed out and never made it past high school ball. Now your trying to mold your kids to be something you never could become.

The good old "vanilla defense" argument. You can always count on that one being used when they perform as poorly as they did today. And they were not good. From the porous front four to the absence of a pass rush to out of position linebackers to Mabin getting thrown on up and down the field. Just a piss poor showing all around.
One bad game does not a season make. But, that kind of performance can't happen again.

What's with all the "couch" BS ? Everyone has the right to speak their mind without some genius stud like youself telling them to quit being objective. I totally agree with their post, def. needs to improve in the pass rush or teams with good QB's are going to march down the field just as Miami did.

As I said on another thread. What more can you expect when your playing a base D and inexperienced Safety in Snyder and LB's such as Hockaday???

Defense played very vanilla today. I wouldn't worry touch about it. No line stunts, blitzing, just basic defensive football. Jewell and Hesse were out for most of the game. Mabin needs to pick it up...he will be targeted all year as teams will avoid King. I never put too much weight into the first game. You think ISU will throw a pick or fumble next week?

All this talk about Hesse being out but his replacement was probably defensive player of the game? Not saying Hesse is bad but I am not sure he delivers what A Nelson did.

Need to find a replacement for Bower fast. I know Jewell will be back but teams are going to run at Bower based on his inability to fill the hole and weak tackling. That's trouble.

Lack of pass rush is a perennial problem for the Hawks...it's nothing new. We had a nice pass rusher in Ott last year for about 4 games. Other than that, it's been slim pickins for several years.

I called Mabin "adequate at best" maybe 6 weeks ago, and got blasted.
I stand by that.

Biggest disappointment for me was the interior DL. The MiaOH guards and center were getting up to the second level very quickly all game. Even with Jewell in there it wouldn't have been a whole lot better when a guard is in his face instantly every run play.

That being said, Bo Bower also unfortunately played very poorly, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him at #2 on the two deeps next week.

Positives for me was the ability to take the ball away, and bring it when coming up to make a tackle. We will see a lot of improvements over the course of the season, and hopefully getting Jewell and a heathy Hesse back will help out a lot.

Agree, the biggest problem to me is the run defense and the DT's, especially JJ were invisible all day. The safeties I thought also struggled, Snyder invisible and Taylor missing at least 2 tackles that come to mind. This was the most surprising aspect of the poor performance because we've been able to count on a stout run defense year after year.

Re-watched the game and it just seemed like the defense was going through the motions. No intensity or urgency.
