Dake to NLWC

Happening while the Iowa RTC has basically been 100% stagnant. It was already hard enough for Iowa to catch PSU consistently, but this about ices it.

The impact this will have on recruiting, which is already ridiculously in their favor, is enormous. Hell, I wonder what this will do to the transfer portal. You simply can’t argue any other place having remotely the level of training partners from top to bottom.

Gilman-4x World Medalist
Retherford-World Silver Medalist
Dake- 4 World Golds and Olympic Bronze
Nolf, Gomez and Bekzod
David Taylor- 1 Olympic Gold, 2 world golds and 1 world silver
Kyle Snyder- 8(yes that is 100% medaling at every world level championship)3 golds, 3 silvers, 1 bronze and still waiting on either a gold or bronze tomorrow.

That doesn’t even account for Nick Lee, RBY, Starocci, Brooks and Dean. Or the coaches- The Sandersons, Cunningham, Varner, Kennedy and McKnight.

Unless a rule comes only to cause serious negative impact to the current RTC system, it will be a battle for 2nd for the foreseeable future…

Unfortunately I agree with everything you just said. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Yainni or even Spencer jump ship after this year.
They have a budget that nobody else can come close to matching and Ira is in the process of trying to open a casino in state college so the rich will only get richer.

While a shiny new building might help, the separation between the clubs is getting ridiculous. While Spencer having success after college will help we can’t put the club success on him. Hopefully the guys that just graduated will help with success but they have training partners from top to bottom at NLWC. They might have Cox and Burroughs too, if their Olympic weight competition wasn’t already there. What recruit wouldn’t want to be in a room like NLWC, with this generation’s wrestling hero’s. You also forgot Kerk for training partner.
Love Dan Dennis but we need a coach with name recognition outside Iowa. If not before the 2024 cycle definitely after we have to make a push for any of the next studs coming out of college that will be taking the place of Dake, Taylor, Snyder etc to train here and a new coach like Taylor, Dake, etc.

Yes - Iowa operates in its own cylo, we need to expand monies not just to former hawks but recruit top level guys from around the country to the HWC.

I mean if everyone is just going to train at the same place might as well just have them all go to Colorado Springs full time.

Rich get richer is right. Might as well call the NLWC the official U.S. Olympic Training Center and everyone else just a small club. And with that comes a huge advantage in pulling in top HS kids to PSU.

Unfortunately the rich get richer. As much as I dislike it, in today's sports you either pony up the money or fall behind and it is pretty clear who is willing to pony up.

This is like the lollipopkins trying to guess what’s behind the curtain. TNT work on many layers we don’t see. Relax. They are at work and we could just show some solidarity to them and continue to see the pieces , and the sport grow from their efforts. Easy does it.
Agree…!!!

NOTHING IS OVER, WE ARE JUST THE GUYS TO DO IT!
What’s crazy is that the HWC could get all the best wrestlers in the US that aren’t already part of NLWC, and still wouldn’t be as good as them. The club they’ve built is remarkable.

I’m sure this is a constant battle that HWC and people on the board go through, but there’s a huge disconnect between Iowa Wrestling and HWC amongst fans and donors. That new facility doesn’t get built without Iowa Wrestling involved. But the facility shows that we have the donors to raise more than enough money for HWC.

It’s not all on the fans and donors though. The Iowa staff needs to do their part to put quality athletes on the Senior level. Results matter and that’s the only way you’re going to draw more attention to HWC. I think Iowa has done a great job at the college level and attracting more talent. Recruiting has been way better than years past. But the HWC has been really bad.

It ain't about money.

from PSU's student newspaper in 2018:

<<
It's (the NLWC) a not-so-secret weapon for the Nittany Lions, but it's a weapon that's been honed, refined and has evolved over the years.

It's also a weapon that's given Penn State a distinct competitive advantage and makes a big difference in the eyes of some.

Now, so much money has been donated to the NLWC that they're able to keep elite guys, specifically David [Taylor], Zain [Retherford], Nico [Megaludis] and a few others," Chertow said. "They're paid to be there and they're actually paid to train and workout on the side with the athletes."

The NLWC has 8.1 times the net assets of the next closest wrestling club — the Hawkeye Wrestling Club>>

The article was from 2018, so to update... add Nolf, Nickal, Joseph, Cassar, Snyder, N Lee, Gilman, Dake.

..... so yeah, obviously money has nothing to do with it

It’s all about the production though. Not the money. Parents are beating down psu’s door to take their kids for free. The NLWC isn’t even paying dake because he’s great friends with David Taylor. Gilman even said it’s not about the money. It’s clearly not about the money. Psu fans know it’s not about the money at all. I know it’s not about the money too. It’s clearly about the damn money. Who are we kidding here? They do produce as well though (some had already done their share of winning before joining, I get it). Having said all of this, shouldn’t the HWC have maybe 2 title contenders? At least 2 who are threats to win final x. Penn state has multiple guys who are winning gold and silver at worlds/Olympics. If we have 1/8 of the budget, we should have a couple of guys who at least challenge 2 weights. Currently, there are zero. Next year will bring in one in Spencer (hopefully) and then who? Eeirman? I’m not sold on his chances (forgive me). Clearly, depending on in-house product doesn’t work against big $. If psu had only the guys they brought up through college competing for the NLWC they’d have DT and just now zain. They brought in Snyder, Gilman and now dake. How many golds, silvers and bronzes is that? Talk about a monopoly. It’s going to take years to even have a shot at sniffing relevancy in free with that club having those guys. And they have replacements waiting in the wings, who are of course, waiting for their shot unpaid. It’s never about $.

The reason Gable had so much more money back in the day was because he produced results better than anyone and people want to be a part of a winner. The money came after his success. The same is true with Cael. He produced winners and the people with money jumped on board.

The cycle just repeats itself. Success leads to more money, which leads to more success, which leads to more money, which leads to more success.........

The question is, when, if ever, will the people from PSU and NLWC be hated as much as the people hate Iowa and who will be the next big dog?

One would have to say that the second best RTC was at Cornell. That is what would concern me, if I was a die hard Hawk fan. How are they getting world medalist and Iowa isn't?

The money was there long before Carl ever stepped onto campus in Happy Valley. Don't kid yourself. That's one of the main reasons he bolted from ISU.

As for medalists from the HWC, that will be changing soon. The HWC will look quite different by 2023. We aren't going anywhere.

Quite different by 2023? Adding Spencer is massive, obviously, but are you eluding to other changes? Short of bringing in a Cox/Yianni/Gross(lol) I don't see drastic changes to the HWC. New buildings are nice and will help but we need personnel.

Even if we don't add anyone, we should have a decent representation at the 2023 trials. All health pending of course. I agree we should have multiple guys in the HWC being top 3 on the ladder. It's very possible we have 3 or 4 guys be top 3 in 2023 world team trials. 57kg Spencer Lee, 61kg Desanto, 65kg Eierman, 70kg Lugo, 74kg Marinelli, Young, (future Kennedy) 79kg Wish we had Kemerer here,Nelson Brands 86kg Myles Wilson/Abe Assad, 92kg Warner, 97kg Future Kueter/Franklin, 125kg Big Cass. Bring in J'Den Cox for 97kg and we would have the 2nd or 3rd best RTC in the country. I know it's not in the realm of what the nlwc has going on but at least its competitive.

Not a huge fan of girl Wrestling, but it seems to be growing very quickly and IOWA looks to have a dynasty in the works.

Someone should be working to build on that and make the HWC a combined force. Get one female executive with a bunch of $$$$ on board. Keep bringing in the very best ladies. Let them wrestle in a side by side dual or an opening dual in front of a sold out Carver!

Promote it with current and former HAWKS signing autographs, give out some free stickers, offer 1/2 price Carver cones during the opening match etc....

Then the HWC could easily have as many world and olympic CHAMPIONS in a few years! Build off of this by using the money to bring in all who are interested. The new facility should also help. Hopefully the ladies team is being considered in the design and planning!

I get the thought but I don't see how a ladies program will help the men's program. I am not a fan of most female sports, I'm just not interested and as a PSU fan if they started a ladies team I doubt I'd watch but I won't miss a men's match.

I'm a PSU fan and I love the women's wrestling. Their skill levels are unreal and they let it fly more than the men on average.
I think what they have going in IC with women's wrestling is great and I'm quite frankly a bit jealous.

I get why some like it but I can't watch women's sports unless it's a measurement sport like track and field, weightlifting for two examples.
