Dale Jones Granted 6th Year of Eligibility

This is good news! So how does this change our recruiting approach for the class of 2017?

And how about the posters that now start speculating on who will transfer.

Transfers happen everywhere. I don't have any statistical data on this, but it seems to me that under McCaffery there have been a relatively low number of kids transferring from Iowa in comparison to other schools. Besides this most recent year, who else has transferred besides Dickerson and Meyer? I'm sure I'm missing a couple I just don't remember.

How do we know this? Not saying it is not true, but why do we think it is?

I don't think anyone knows...but I think Dale flashed some solid potential in his limited minutes before going down with an injury (when he looked to be really finding his groove/place), and that's what I'm basing this news off of. Obviously, who knows how his knees will respond this/next year.

This impacts 2017's recruiting class because we're now full...but depending on how this year plays out, I wouldn't be shocked to see someone transfer out.

The scholarship players I remember leaving are Dickerson, Meyer, Payne and Ingram, in addition to Hutton and Fleming. It's possible I'm forgetting someone.

Oh yes, I forgot about Ingram. I don't really put Payne's transfer on McCaffery since he was a Lickliter guy.

Yeah, I really don't either. But he transferred after Fran's 1st season, so I counted him.

Fran averages one scholarship transfer per year. I'm sure the 2017 offers will stay open in the event a transfer does happen and if it doesn't, Connor may walk on a year (let the speculation begin).

There are some really terrific prospects out there for 2018, so I'm pretty excited we will get to have an extra scholarship for that year. 2017 has plenty of good recruits, but I feel like the only ones that are really worth getting excited over are O Connell and Williams and we feel like long shots there IMO.

I think you're underestimating that big kid from Indiana Jack Nunge, he looks to be very skilled and would be a great fit in this system. If there is one complaint with Fran (besides late game situations and refusals to use timeouts), it would have to be the inability to balance out the classes and having one scholarship for this year and next beyond Connor. No complaints at all about giving Baer a scholarship, he's earned it and is deserving, but its unfortunate we are so limited this year and next with available scholarships. We are coming off 3 straight NCAA tournaments, this isn't exactly the time to have next to no scholarships available as our profile and appeal continues to grow.

At least it's not 80% of the starting lineup transferring, the way it was with Lickliter. I actually thought he had a shot at a good team the year after he got fired, but when he lost everyone that mattered, that was it.

I don't think that's right, pretty sure Payne never played under Fran.

He did play a little but was injured most of that season. After Bryce Cartwright lead the B1G in assists he knew his starting spot was gone and he left.

He was there Fran's first year. Played in maybe the fist 7-8 games, then missed most of the rest of the year with an injury (foot/ankle?).

Payne had a sports hernia and then also an issue with an oblique muscle.

Cool, well not for him obviously. I remembered him being out a big chunk, but I couldn't remember the exact reason.

I do not remember Payne

He played 5 games for the Hawks during Fran's first season. He spent most of Lickliter's final season as the starting PG. IIRC, he played more minutes that season than everyone but Gatens.

He was the dude that hit a halfcourt buzzer beater right before halftime in a game vs. Texas in some pre-season holiday tournament.

Wasn't it like a 3/4 court shot? I want to say he was on or near the opposite FT line. Pretty sure it was his FR year.

IIRC he was also the only one who showed up vs. UM for Lick's final loss at BTT.

Everyone else went through the motions and Lick held his head in his hands.

Good for Jones. An unfortunate injury history has limited his court time. Here's to hoping he can stay healthy and make the most of getting another year.

So quick question. Just because Jones has gotten a 6th year, does that automatically mean, he will be on scholarship for that 6th year?

I'm sure it does. That would be kind of a dick move to yank his scholarship his senior year.

If Jones is healthy, he could help a lot on the boards and with his outside shooting. Having him available for two years makes it less critical to get a big in the 2017 class.

Happy for him. Just hope he can play 2 straight years without further injury. He's had 2 ACL injuries to same knee now in a span of what 3 years? I don't think it's all that realistic to expect him to be a huge contributor, at least this year. His game was never about movement or lateral quickness, and with the knee injuries that will be even more of the case. He's 6-8 and he can shoot, so there is value if he's a 40%+ 3-point shooter. Whatever Iowa can get out of him this year is a bonus. If he can make it through the season healthy, 2017-18 he will likely be in better position to make an impact.
