Damn Spencer Lee

He was rolling along in the quarterfinals in the morning. Then landed awkwardly stretching out his leg. Wasn't the same the rest of that match. Wouldn't shock me if he's torn another ACL.

At least two Iowa athletics Twitter types have hinted at this as well.

Spencer’s mom is a former judo Olympic team member. That’s a pretty fiery woman there and probably who gave Spencer the behavior role model that got him to world class athlete.
I get that, and she’s a grown adult who should be able to handle this and all…I just didn’t love the decision to go back and show it and then repeat multiple times.

There’s no way he can do the Olympics right? I know very little about wrestling but the dude has no knees left.

Penn State is loaded. Sanderson is essentially the Coach Gable of today.
That and he has superior overall talent. I wonder which wrestler under performed (other than Lee) that that earlier poster was referencing?

Guess I'll be seeing that on forums for years to come.

Maybe I'm the minority but I thought them showing his mom was awesome. I really don't think it was at her expense, I think that clip encapsulates the intensity and passion of wrestling and that stuff can draw people in. It's not like she damaged property that wasn't hers or hurt anyone, I thought it was kinda cool

In my opinion collegiate wrestling has done not just a bad but abysmal job of marketing itself. I honestly don't get why it doesn't have better viewership and attendance numbers across the country, especially with how popular UFC is. I know they are different sports but I'd say it's a similar fan demographic or at least there's some overlap.

They showed a quick clip of her breaking glasses in the intro to sportscenter then they showed the pin and full clip of her during the broadcast. I can't remember them showing a college wrestling highlight ever other than acknowledging when a national championship is crowned which is usually a team shot with the trophy

Then on the AM sportscenter they showed her taking down Spencer with a judo move at the "Lee family Christmas". Very cool. It was great exposure as far as I'm concerned, even after a loss. I think wrestling could use more of this

Learning to lose is just as important as learning to win. Appears we have a bunch of full grown babies on this board that justify their bad behavior with people “not understanding”

*Learning to watch your child lose.

I’m a big college wrestling fan, and that’s how I came across this board.

Spencer Lee has never been anything but a gracious loser on the 7 or so times it’s ever happened.

Eh, it's wrestling....not golf or tennis. With what is tolerated from Fran I just don't think it's that big of a deal at all.

I saw an emotional breakdown. I'm sure that wasn't her proudest moment, but she shouldn't be ridiculed. They shouldn't have kept showing it.

Nothing wrong with the reaction by the mom. People who aren't ultra competitive just won't understand. I've done much, much worse things after losses in my life, thank God there weren't cameras around at the time.

Circa 1997-98. We uspet #3 Grinnell in basketball (HS), their best player proceeded to post game punching out lights, glass, etc. He ended up having to pay for all of it.

Side story, next game for us was Pella and Korver. Korver was classy. Didn't talk crap, etc,

I guess what I'm saying is you can be ultra competitive and not be an idiot

Ramos gave him quiete a match earlier in the year. So probably not. Maybe biggest upset in recent history.
Ramos threw him and got a near fall putting him up 8-2, and could have beat Lee if Lee hadn't tilted him and ultimately pinned him in that match.

That's why I said I might be in the minority but I just don't see it as ridicule at all, it's okay to disagree there. These networks show replays of outbursts on the sidelines and in dugouts of all kinds of sports, I just think it's capturing the raw emotion of the event and people want to see it. She knew there would be a lot of eyes on her, I doubt she's losing much sleep over that. Spencer's loss might be causing some insomnia though

Uh, yeah, the first situation you presented is psychotic and not anything close to breaking a pair of glasses.

What she did was nothing compared to stuff that happens in locker rooms and behind closed doors all the time, that's my very obvious point here.

Coming from the creep who says hanging out naked with a bunch of strangers in a male's locker room is how a man can be a man lol.

Yes that’s exactly what I said.

huge fan of letting it just hang out and start a convo with a random and occasionally scratch my hog.

It know it was jest but hasn’t PSU won the national title 10 of the past 12 seasons?
That post was for the fire Fran people, and the old guys at my gym who bitch about how soft the team is mentally, and how out of shape Lee is.

If you can’t bear to watch your kid lose, don’t go to their sporting events, or do what Ronaldo’s mom does and take a valium.

I think she looks a lot like Marcia Clark. I wish there had been a similar reaction by the prosecution at the O.J. Verdict reading.

Marcia could have ripped that damn glove to pieces. Seriously I'm an ISU fan but respect greatness. I was shocked Lee lost and don't know if his injuries affected this match but assume we will hear more about it. Followed college and high school wrestling since the early '70's. Injury or not it's hard to keep beating the same wrestler multiple times. Especially talented ones. Seems many times the matches keep getting closer.

Brent Metcalf in 2009? I think it was, was a huge upset. Most recent one I can remember.

As for the mom, meh. She broke a pair of glasses when she was upset. Emotions get the best of people. It's not like she tried to take someone out.
