1. Why does Kirk Ferentz make more than Mark Dantonio? Ferentz certainly has more class, but outside of Dantonio's reluctance to hold players out for disciplinary issues, he's a straight forward, no-nonse type football coach with a knack for knowing how and when to roll the dice, and he's never, ever gotten lazy with recruiting.
He's done more in 10 years than Ferentz has done in 18 years. Please stop the bullies of the B1G references. We haven't been the bullies of the B1G since 2002-2005, and we had a few brief bully moments in 2009-2010. Dantonio is and has sustained the bullies of the B1G for quite some time.
Ferentz doesn't like Dantonio, but there's no argument that Dantonio is a much better college football coach.
2. The biggest fallacy in regards to Kirk Ferentz and Iowa Football is that we are a good running team. We aren't. We consistently rank outside of the top 40 in rushing yards. We've ranked in the top 25 maybe two times in Ferentz' 18 year tenure? Zone blocking isn't used at all anymore. The styles that run all over people in today's game are using pre-snap motion with TE and WR to create deception and advantages with an extra blocker. They force you to stay home to account for the QB. See how NDSU runs the football on offense. That's how you run the football. It's a lot harder to diagnose a pulling TE or presnap jet sweep motion type play than it is to diagnose I-Form with a full back and RB all slogging in one direction.
Iowa Football is like LSU Football with less talent annually. Ferentz is like Les Miles.
3. NDSU prepared for Iowa the entire off-season because this was going to be their coach's last season there anyways. He could have gone 7-5 and still landed a mid-major job, but beating Iowa opens up a new plethora of opportunities. He makes a deep playoff run this year with the Iowa win on his resume and he's going to be possibly considered FBS jobs, unlike his predecessor who is now at Wyoming.
4. Iowa didn't prepare for this game the same as it does for others, and Iowa doesn't prepare for all games the same. I think we've started to see more emphasis (man hours) spent on Iowa State than earlier in Ferent'z tenure, but don't let anyone tell you that Ferentz and his staff spends the same amount of time and effort on each team on their schedule because it's BS.
Iowa would beat NDSU and cover the 18.5 spread if it was a bowl game. Not because they players would play harder, although they probably would, but because the amount of time going into gameplanning and scouting would be tremendously different. I bet the NDSU staff spent 5 times more hours prepping for this game. There's no way they struggle like that in their first two games. They did what Iowa did for NDSU, and they were just fortunate enough to pull those games out with more talent.
