Dasonte Bowen has entered the Transfer Portal (Commits to St. Bonaventure). He was supposed to be "the" PG that Fran finally landed

If Bowen had played as much as PMAC, I don't think he'd be leaving. If Bowen had been Frans' kid, he would have played more. So yes it does come down to PMAC syndrome.

Fran has a hard time recruiting African american players in 1st place since our roster is only 30% African American vs college average of around 53%. Keeping African American players from portaling out is even harder for Fran. Seems like lack of PT is usually most of the issue along with Fran not being able to recruit highly rated African american players in first place with more ability to earn PT.

We have lost to transfer Recruited African American players C. Williams, Dailey, Hutton, Wagner, Pemsl, Moss, JoeT, Dickinson, Ogundule, Uhlis, Bowen while only losing caucasian Ellingson, Fredricks, Nunge. Our portal losses seem disproportionately African American, so maybe Fran is not as loved by All his players as is made out.
I think Perkins is the only black guard to make it four years in close to a decade and I only count 4 total in 14 years.

At this point I don't know why Fran even bothers to recruit black guards.

IMHO Fran has been on a downward spiral (of sorts) trying to recruit athletic guards since losing out to Tyler Ulis. Without having Bowen’s HS offers in front of me, I am guessing it was mainly low/mid tier programs. So essentially we were hoping to land a diamond in the rough. I get it that athletic guards don’t grow on trees and are chopping at the bit to play for Iowa, but Fran needs to figure it out - preferably via the portal. Maybe take a chance on a former highly recruited guard who is riding the pine for a blue blood? No shame in taking blue blood scraps!😎
No, He had plenty of high major offers from good programs.

One of the better sets of offers Fran had won against.

It is interesting to note that Connor McCaffery committed to Iowa in August of 2014. In the four recruiting classes that followed (2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018) we signed a grand total of one point guard — Jordan Bohannon.

FWIW, the total number of PGs who even received scholarship offers during this period was pretty low, relative to other positions.

The drought ended in 2019, we landed Joe Toussaint, after missing on DJ Carton. In 2020, we got Ahron Ulis. And then in 2022, we picked up Dasonte Bowen. And as we now know, all three of these guys left Iowa with eligibility remaining, or are about to.
One pg who was a shooting guard.

This is why Iowas never going anywhere with Fran.

Sorry, no loss for me. I thought he had potential, but Fran doghoused him & he lost his confidence. Same will happen to Brock when Fran recruits over him & brings in a pg from the portal.

Bad for you & your boy.
Brock will get 30+ minutes next year. Fran is always hard on freshman guards. I can't see why Fran would not play Brock next year. He does everything Fran likes. The only problem is his size on D but we all know what Fran thinks about D.

I agree and Brock is smart elite passer gets the team in the offensive he maybe undersized on defense but he is a willing defender

Note: willing defender is such a bad term these days when i played you defend or you sit!

Tyler made the right choice. I don't know why any HS PG would want to play in his system.

Sapp is the last one I remember and that was 2016

Meh.... Another PG failure by Fran. I'm excited for the next PG he can bring in to do nothing and leave a year later. Excellent work

Please. All but one of the black players left for more playing time, plain and simple, it’s not a color issue. Moss left to go to Kansas, hard to argue with that. The White guys left because (1) lack of talent (2) Kentucky and (3) his father’s death.

Bowen never showed a worthiness for more playing time, and he got plenty of opportunities. PMac had nothing to do with it, Dix and Harding were better players.

I don’t know the stats. But I’m guessing that Fran has far fewer transfer outs than most coaches.

No one is saying they didn't leave for more playing time.

The question is should they have gotten more pt at Iowa.

Some of them yes, some no, some we don't know.

But what we do know is Fran would rather play poor athletes that can shoot vs guys who can defend and drive the ball.

Well, exactly. The accusation was that they left for race related reasons. I have a hard time arguing any of those black players (or white) deserved more playing time. I just don’t see race being an issue. The only good player that left was Moss, who actually ended up playing less at Kansas.

Some of them definitely did and would have played for most other coaches with those rosters.

There’s not much, if any, money available for a good player out of the portal. It’s been mentioned most NIL goes to football and very little available for basketball. No good pg is transferring to Iowa for free.
Price tag for a top tier PG is North of $200K.

Bowen leaving is not a surprise. Whether or not he succeeds elsewhere, he can at least now look for an opportunity that gives him a better chance.

It’s the annual watch the March Madness tourney and see unbelievable guard play from teams lowly to highly ranked seeds and wonder why the hell can’t Iowa find guards like that?!!!
To be completely fair, there may be some admission differences between Iowa and some of those small schools. However, I do the same thing watching games. "How the hell does Mcneese St have 3 PG's all better than what we have?".

With out quality guards the program is in trouble. Other teams seem to be able to land them. Watch the tournaments and see that small schools seem to have pretty good guards.

I think Fran gravitates toward point guards that remind him of himself.

This in a nutshell, which gave us Cmac. Unfortunately its not 40+ years ago, and THAT guy doesn't have the athletisim to penetrate or defend at this level.....
I've said this for sometime now.
Take the names off the jersey and coach. If you looked at this roster, who left, who hasn't, it is a bit perplexing. You can be the nicest guy in the world but the relationship that carries the most weight is a kids ass with the seat. Kids don't stay when they don't understand what does and doesn't warrant playing time.
Who fran plays has been a serious ? from day one.

I've come to believe this wholeheartedly. I don't believe it's a "racism" issue - I'm pretty sure Fran would be happy to play a black PG if he was also a good shooter. It just seems like most of the ones he's recruited have turned out to NOT be good shooters, and they find themselves on the bench. Then they transfer.
