Dec 24 ESPN Bracketology: Iowa is on the bubble & the 4th team out

I think he’s a lot more squared up with most of his shots than you think. He’s got an extremely quick release.

And Fran has long preached that he wants his shooters to shoot when they have open looks, no matter the shot clock.

I mean it's not thinking it's fact. He does not defy the laws of physics nor shooting technique. He is not squared up nor set up. He's shooting 30% for the year. The stats don't lie. He pulled up for a bad shot on a 3v1 last week. Just smooth brained decisions. He's forcing things trying to be the guy.

Not being a jerk, but I understand the Quad system. My point was that road games have a higher likelihood of landing in the Q1 column due to the higher weighting. Just like home games have a higher likelihood of landing in Q2 or below. Just an observation.
No. I’m not being a jerk either. I understood your point. Your observation is fair. Somewhat obvious, but accurate and substantive.

Because the coach Fran doesn't value height, and will probably play Brauns over Mulvey, Saturdays game is going to be basically a throw away game. Without help from Traore or Koch, rebounding is going to get ugly against the 2 seven footers that Michigan plays and unless Freeman, Harding, Dix, and Payton go off and keeps it close, tomorrows game could be over by half time, similar to the Purdue/Penn St game.
Still can't figure out why coach Fran redshirted Riley last year if he didn't intend to use him this year. Coaching malpractice.....that's about the jest of it!!

We have to be missing something with Mulvey. At first I thought it had something to do with a lack of offense which seems to be Fran's sole focus more often than not. You can't convince me that Brauns brings more to the table than Mulvey on either end of the court and yet he's appeared in 7 games while Mulvey had only appeared in 4. It's not even close from a rebounding perspective. It's almost a self-fulfulling prophecy for Iowa at this point. Mulvey brings more rebounding potential than anyone on a team that absolutely sucks at rebounding and Fran refuses to play him.

Edit: On a per 40 basis Mulvey is tops on the team at 14.4 and Brauns is one of the worst at 4.3, barely above Thelwell.

You know he’s been playing hurt, right?

I know he’s been banged up but I sure thought Tadjo would be part of the rotation. On the other hand, in the one game he’s played in he got 4 fouls in 5 minutes, so maybe he needs more work than thought.

Kinda wish he’d redshirted after missing so much of of the early non conference, the rotation is likely to tighten up from here on outside a couple remaining cupcakes.

He just needs some minutes. He was way to revved up in the foul fest you referenced. Love his size, bounce and motor.

Literally nothing we’ve seen or heard about him the past 3 years says he’s a selfish player.
I agree. I think he's just doing what Fran has told him to do, even if it appears to make little sense sometimes. Otherwise Fran would sit him down.

Was Sandfort even on the floor at the end of the Northwestern game? If not that's really interesting.

Yes, he was.

And Fran has always told his shooters to keep shooting; it’s the only way to get out of slump. We saw Sandfort without those shoulder bandages - whatever they’re called for the first time in a couple weeks, so hopefully that’s a sign that he’s getting healthy.

8th team out isn’t the bubble. You are clearly out.
The bubble might go as far as the third team in very rare situations, but 8th and you’re closer to the NIT bubble.

Game against utah looms large relative to tourney bid chances.

The first two teams left from the conference don't go to the NIT. They go to that new Vegas tournament.

This can't be right. We just scored 100+ points in a win against New Orleans.

But seriously...Utah is looking like a must win kind of matchup. Beating New Hampshire (#360 out of 364 teams) by 50, is not going to move the needle.

Haslametrics says Iowa in a close one:

I think the next two games against Utah and at Wisconsin will tell us a lot about the team. Win those two and we’re in great shape for a nice run. Lose them and the whole season looks to be a struggle. I think Fran’s teams usually make a jump in play this time of year.

It’s not a must win matchup with so many Q1 games left against B1G competition. Step off the ledge.

If this team would take an interest in rebounding, I think they could make some noise

I know Ohio St has plot very tough schedule but they have been ridiculously bad in some games. They aren’t even close to a tournament team. 38 pt loss to Auburn, down 60-23 to Maryland, not very competitive against A & M, I mean cmon. Last team in? How?

Maybe not a must win. But a loss to utah puts more pressure on the conference schedule.
Probably 11 league wins at a minimum. Possibly 12.

That's cool. I can go visit my son then. See! It's a win-win for me. 😃
I go to Vegas during March Madness, and I'd considered pushing it back if Iowa makes that Vegas tournament. Not sure it's going to work on two weeks notice though with airfare, hotel, work.

I absolutely think it's a must win. My guess is a loss drops the NET to 65-70. Iowa really needed to go 1-1 against Michigan & ISU especially since they were so damn close. It stings.
