His best win is over #18 Renda

Brooks is ranked #11 by Intermat and #9 by flow

Losses to #6 zillmer and #10 Dudley

Best win #6 Zillmer #20 Gravina #18 Renda

Thoughts?

I think it's huge for Sammy if he can get the 5,6, or 7 seed. He's a possible finalist. If he's 8 or 9 he's fighting for AA.

I think Sammy makes a big run at Big Tens in Carver and lands a good seed at Nationals. And I agree -- that seed is crucial to his AA prospects. He could effectively erase the brain-fart in Lincoln with a win over Dudley or higher placement than Dudley at Big Tens. I think he gets it done.

Sammy seems to be getting smarter. tonight he locked up the bear hug - and sometimes used that to hit a single. he also did not try the loose suicide roll when the clear/safe move was something easier for the tf.

hope that brody can be as smart - glad brody got a fall tonight - but .... just wished he took the easy take down, rode the guy for 35-40 seconds before going all out for the fall. ride the dude again for a few more and then wear him down - and then in the 3rd drop the hammer. i just don't think brody knows how to win - he just knows how to punish inferior wrestlers - can he be AA?

Brooks wins BIG and he is a top 4 seed. Places second still probably top 8. He will be fine I believe. 184 is so balanced just get away from Dean and everyone else is a non issue. There are so many tough guys at 184, but Brooks has beat most of them at some point.

I think Brody has proven he knows how to win. You don't beat all 4 top place winners in your weight class without knowing how to win. I do agree, though, that he needs to keep his thinking cap on out there and keep the risk/reward ratio of his moves in line. He has great ability -- he just needs to harness it and apply it wisely. He's looking more confident every time out, and he's only wrestled 3 varsity-level matches in the last year. I wish he had another month to build more momentum, but I like where he's headed. Hoping he turns some heads in March. I know he can.

My thoughts-
Sammy's seed is important and his ranking unimportant.

I think the computerized seeding is going to hurt Avery, Dechow & Stuaffer. None of these guys have any big wins yet. I am not sure they will see any before the end of the year either.

Avery is 3-0 and not sure he is going to be facing any top 10 guys before nationals.
Dechow, see above
Stauffer, has a loss to Zavatsky - missed a lot of the season - best win this year is Koepke from ill.

If Brooks wins B1G, I have a hard time seeing him seeded behind any of these guys.
Avery, Dechow, Stauffer, McC, Dudley, Aboundader

and he would have a decent case for being ahead of
Milkus, Brown & Zilmer

..and the musical chairs at 184 continue. Seeding probably means less for NCAA here than other weights. I'm not sure who to even hope to avoid. Could Boyd have really improved this quickly? I chalked up the win over Miklus to the fact Willie was hurt, but now Dean too?

I think Brooks will be fine as long as he doesn't get the 8, 9, or 16 seed, who meet up with the 1 seed early who will likely still be Dean. Brooks can beat Dean, but i'd still favor Dean and I don't really want to see him in the backside early, because one mistake can cost you and with a loaded weight like this the R12 is going to definitely be a blood round. If he can get into one of the other 3 Quarters of the bracket I think he has a good shot of making the semi's, then who knows what can happen from there.

He really hasn't. He hasn't beat Stauffer, Miklus, Dechow, Thomas, Dean or Avery. The only highly ranked guy he's beaten is Zillmer.

184 is key for Iowa. We both need big points from Brooks and not very many points from McC to have a chance to win.

He's beaten Dudley, but I you might not be considering him highly ranked. And some of those guys you list he hasn't wrestled, and I'd like his chances.

No doubt it's a tough, balanced, and deep weight class, and no doubt a deep run by Sammy will be pretty critical to our chances at a team title.

I wasn't considering Dudley but he's darn good now and I think will aa.

I'm not saying he can't beat them. I'm just saying he hasn't.

He hasn't wrestler most of them. Last year he lost to Stauffer and Dean.

Yep -- I figured that was what you meant. Didn't mean to contradict you -- just wanted to point out that he hasn't wrestled a good chunk of that group and that I'd like his chances against them. And I agree about Dudley -- he looks really good this year. Still like Sammy's chances against him in a rematch, but he's looking tough, and I do think he AA's this year. That said, at 184, it's a bit of a crap shoot even for the studs.
