Defense got gashed

Leidner couldn't have felt more comfortable back there. We didn't have a single tackle short of the 1st down marker that entire last scoring drive by them, when they are out of timeouts.

That was a pathetic defensive effort. Offensive Lines around the league are licking their chops right now.

I don't blame the LBs for being on the field that last drive. It was a clear nickel/dime situation. Leave Jewell to spy Leidner.

But 10-0!

They were really bad tonight. Wonder what was up? Minny is even having to deal with new coaching right now!

Has Leidner become that good or did our defense just implode. Need a better performance to win out. We could ready use a speed pass rusher at DE Hesse spot. Hesse hurt?

Yeah, Jesus. Especially after Daniels put them up by 12, it was incredibly irritating to watch the defense offer near zero resistance. Reminded me of Nebraska's porous pass defense. I've seen this time and time again against the Huskers, didn't expect it against the Hawks.

Iowa's d will be fine--just a bad matchup with the Gophers right now, for whatever reason. They've figured out something about Iowa's scheme on film and have exploited it the past couple years--it's inexplicable, but it's isolated. Hawks will be back to their shutdown ways next weekend.

If Minnesota figured it out then Nebraska will eat this D up, not to mention if we're fortunate enough to meet up with OSU.

Fisher and Mabin are the weak link on this defense. Fisher is not good in pass coverage and I'm surprised we don't have anyone else that can take his spot on passing downs.

Minnys offense reminds me of northwestern offense that really gives us trouble. Dink and dunk until a midrange pass opens. Solid running game. When the qb doesn't make mistakes its very frustrating.

THis is the dark side of bend but don't break. Fortunately we still came out on top. Also doesn't help that we are thin at de with no pass rush.

I hope Kirk rips them a new one for this performance.

Id like to say next week will be a breeze, but I can't. No game is a gimme.

Enjoy the win for about 24 hours, then start dissecting all the numerous mistakes on D. I'm actually thinking this is an appropriate time for one of Kirk's patented coach speak phrases that have been so maddening in the past, "Need to get a few things cleaned up."

What...we blitzed 2 times the whole game? The D was the worse I've seen it this year. Guys running rampid out there....wide freaking open!!
Glad to get the win but this Minny team couldn't have been the best offense we have went against this year...

Im pretty sure they ran the same pass play all the way down the field for that last TD. Frustrating to watch NO pressure and to see our LBs giving up huge gains to TE. That trick play was just plain stupid on Mabin and safety's behalf. How stupid can you be?

Shave it down to 18 hrs for the D. Gotta earn that 24!

JJ was stout all year and invisible today. No pressure from Meyer. Guys aren't getting many pick me ups from subs.

The problem with our defense tonight pressure. Absolutely NO pass rush kills us. The read option hurt us at times. Unfortunately, our defensive line is undersized and our linebackers get caught up. Mabin is a total liability out there. CJB is a hell of a leader but without solid defense, we cant beat the upper ranks.....
Pass rush has absolutely nothing to do with being 5 to 10 yards away from any receiver. That's either players being stupid or defensive play calling.

The issue was mainly on 3rd downs. The D had trouble getting off the field on 3rd downs.

Minnesota has been playing better on O as of late. They seriously gashed Michigan too. Improved play by Leidner has been a contributor there. Furthermore, the young RBs are pretty talented.

Lastly, they gashed us on some tough plays to cover. Cole Fisher got burned on plenty of occasions tonight ... but the first big one that went for a TD was awfully tough to pick up. That TE slipped out brilliantly ... the play developed to perfection.

Also, the pass-play by the RB on the toss-sweep was a tough one to defend too. The DBs cheated up to help against the run ... and then got burned. Also, a good call by Minnesota.

It's hard to win by trick plays alone ... but they helped keep Minnesota in the game.

Bend and bend and then break was just barely enough to run out the clock tonight. Wow.

Jewell played well. Fisher was poor and Mabin had some bad moments.

Minnesota did a really good job of keeping Iowa off-balance. Iowa's DL was so intent on maintaining gaps that they couldn't create any pressure on play action. In hindsight, it would have been better to man up and blitz.

Iowa was playing their base 4-3 personnel on Minnesota entire last drive. That's on the staff.

But almost every 10-0 team has a game or two like this. Survive it, correct mistakes, and play on.

Lots of offensive plays work when a defensive line is getting no penetration or QB pressure. That's pretty much what I saw from our D-line the whole game.

Iowa d has been skating a fine line most of the year, since they get almost zero pass rush. When you don't get timely turnovers this is the result. The offense has really helped them out by having miraculously few fumbles/ints as well.

Perfect storm, we are not great against the run (at least tonight), and we provide virtually no pass rush. Meier was only speed rusher it appeared we had after Hesse got hurt (he may have come back in, not sure). We are going to have to execute some timely blitzes against good teams.
