Why such a drastic difference? Starters seemed not to anticipate state’s movement or be in the right spot on the floor but the subs did.
its called quickness and athleticism
Didn’t see the game and just listened on the radio to Dolph (worst announcer in the Big Ten). Turned it on at 79-70 when Sparty was making their late push. Sounds like the bench and Garza won the game. Not going to rehash old statements but 2-3 of our guys on the bench are better than our starters. Fran needs to have the quick hook the rest of the season when Weiskamp, Connor and JBO won’t play D. 20 offensive rebounds for Sparty. They scored 51 pts the other night and 78 tonight. Interesting.
The starters could not guard the wingsAs others have stated, it was nice to see Iowa defenders able to stay in front of their guy and actually play aggressive D vs. back pedaling 3 feet of a cushion d. Definitely slowed MSU's dribble drives down.
Also effort and wanting to play good defense. Why such a drastic difference? Starters seemed not to anticipate state’s movement or be in the right spot on the floor but the subs did.
It's definitely a factor. There was zero, zip sense of urgency with the starters tonight as well. Non-existent. Very impressed with the freshmen, Toussaint and Nunge. Iowa doesn't win without them.
Worse than their man to man defense is their ability to rotate in the zone. Way too many wide open threes that most D1 players are gonna hitThe starters could not guard the wings

Connor, Weiskamp, Bohannon, and CJ are all on short leashes now.
Way too many hungry, much more, athletic players who should be taking their minutes
Perkins, and Toussaint are just more active and quicker. Watch their hands compared to Jbo and Connor, they are up in the face and they are just quicker at rotating. Frans matchup zone is not suited for our starters, the quicker guys can recover faster. I think next year our offense is going to go backwards but our defense will improve. I would like to see us employ the 1-3-1 zone more than the 2-3 matchup, it allows us to use our length better and still get out on shooters.
After this year is over I hope we never play zone again.
I understand its necessary to keep Luka out of trouble this year but next years group should be very well suited to play switching man and playing man will make the defense that much better.
Three freshman, one sophomore and Garza played significant minutes down the stretch and made the plays they needed to.
Agreed, we need him healthy.I don't think I'd throw CJ in that group. I'm assuming he's still not right and he still brings it on defense in comparison to the others.

Rotating defenses is not a bad idea. I am not a huge fan of playing one defense 100% of the time. Whatever defense is being played, you have to give great effort and communicate and move as a team. Some opponents are much better at playing against a man defense or a zone defense, and sometimes an opponent is in a great rhythm against one type of defense.
But yes, the bench group as a whole is likely to be better on defense as they are just better defenders, period.
well, in short, because the bench is where all the best defenders on the team dwell.. 3 of 5 starters should probably not even be on the court at the same time from here on out, especially if they are gonna spot teams 10-12 points to start each half.. I do believe Luca & Joe W can play in any line up that’s on the court however..
I agree but CJ is easily the best defender of the starters and the best shooter.
Hes actually the only guy on the team who shoots well and defends well, Keegan can be in that category at times.
Connor doesn't do either.
I'm not sure our starters aren't giving top effort but agree w/some on here they just aren't athletic enough to recover in the zone, which leaves huge gaps all over the court for wide open 3's and drives. The energy and athleticism the 2nd unit brings is night and day better right now. If you're comparing Pat and Connor at the 4, 1 is 6-9 and can run and jump and the other is 6-5 and can't shoot or defend very well. If Joe W can't and won't bring it every night for 28-30 minutes at the 3 then we give Keegan his minutes. Same w/Bohannon and Touissant. Nunge earned more minutes last night, drew the key foul late when Sparty had cut the lead to 2 points I believe. He's actually our best rebounder right now. We have lots of options right now and Fran can't be loyal to his veterans just to be loyal. Throw in Perkins at the 2 in place of CJ as well. I get that he's trying to gut it out but at 70-80% he can't be in there.
Think you’re overestimating CJ’s defensive ability.
I guess I would probably rate him and Weiskamp about the same. Keegan, Patrick, Touissant, Perkins and Ulis are all better than any of our starters on defense. The way Nunge is playing he is our best interior defender and rebounder.By saying he's the best out of the starters?

Our starting defensive play is atrocious.By saying he's the best out of the starters?
He may be the best on-ball defender (barely), but Wieskamp is more opportunistic in terms of steals, and is much more valuable as a rebounder. I’d put Joe as 1, and CJ as 2, but given that neither are all that great at defense, it just goes to show what a sad state of affairs things are at the defensive end for our startersBy saying he's the best out of the starters?
