Defense

Its going to take allot more than this game to figure out how to play defense.

Probably the better part of this season to even become servicable.

Allot of individually disinterested defenders componded double by the lack of familiarity with eachother.

They need to start fouling instead of giving up uncontested layups for much of the final 10 minutes. I can see not fouling earlier in the game but they have to make opponents earn it from the line at crunch time. Over and over they just stood there and gave up the bunny. Seton Hall is a good team and our potential is evident. I think we have an NCAA team barring injury.

They will need to do a 180 on defense to make the NCAA tournament. Horrendous on the defensive side of the ball. If it wasn't for SH missing a lot of wide open bunnies in the first half they would have had over 110 pts.

We won't be tourney team with that D. Seton Hall is projected as a 10-11 seed, and they beat us on our floor. So right now, unless D improves, we're NIT

When this team learns to play defense, they are going to be very, very good. Most raw talent I have seen on a Iowa basketball team in decades. This loss should be a great learning tool.

This is correct. This will be a learning year and the future is very bright.

Reasons why the D looked crappy last night:

-- They definitely didn't do a good job of finding and stopping the ball in transition. Or stopping penetration in the half court.
-- Fran's system involves multiple defensive looks, that means more to learn and practice. And they are young, and the season is too.
-- Defense is about effort, it wasn't there last night. And PJ in particular was like a matador, holy jeez.
-- Seton Hall is a good, experienced team

That's what young teams do - play poor team defense. On the upside, it looks like we have guys that are aggressive and talented on the offensive side.

Give Fran time to teach these guys the finer technique points, and to learn to communicate on the court and put up better defense. They are going to be exciting to watch and could end up being very very good when they figure it out.

They don't have to play great defense to win, if they can continue with the offensive output. But, they do have to improve quite a bit to get to serviceable defense.
I thought they would be just on the outside of an NCAA tourney bid; still think that's most likely.
I, like many, also thought that the defense would not be good at the start of the year. And so it has been.
I much prefer offensive basketball with athletic players. They have that.
I'm on board with this team. They'll struggle. They'll lose plenty. There's talent there that can be built on. They are capable of playing better D. Again, it doesn't have to be stellar D. Just good enough to outscore their opponents.
