Iowa should hire the Flexibility Maestro that AJ Ferrari has been working with to train the entire team. Flexibility training is great for injury prevention. Take some of the "250K" offered to Truax and put it toward a specialized 6 month program specifically tailored to each guy. AJ started back in January and he's at a full front splits and and I'd say 90-95% or more of the way to a full side splits. Need to try to find unique ways to gain an edge. Nutrition/Strength/Conditioning/Recovery/Flexibility/Training all need to be evaluated (and I'm not saying they already aren't constantly evaluated).
I'd also be interested in seeing the strength and conditioning program Yianni used in his comeback from his ACL repair. That guy was always putting his knees in precarious positions sitting the corner, shin whizzers, rubber knee defense and he still seemed just as gumby after his injury as before. Austin O'Connor too for that matter, looked better than ever after his ACL repair.
I don't want to feed into the stereotype that is clearly being used against Iowa - that we overtrain and grind our guys down. That being said, the optics of us always having high profile guys being injured the past handful of years has definitely negatively affected the perception of us, right or wrong, justified or not. Just read through wrestling social media on twitter/facebook/instagram and other forums. I can't help but feel like this played a small part in tipping the scales towards PSU in the portal sweepstakes so far this off season. Most of the freak injuries we've had have happened in matches (Eierman/Lee/Kemerer/Marinelli) but still it's worth looking at every angle.
To expand on this. Take a look at the Treigning Lab instagram page if you're so inclined. It's filled with PSU wrestlers and MMA fighters. The connection has long been known, but I'm guessing it plays a major factor in staying healthy and all of the things mentioned above. Aaron Pico, Helen Maroulis, Cassar, Brooks, Starocci, Nickal, Yianni D, Gilman, Dake, Snyder. Basically every NLWC athlete and PSU stud wrestler plus others.
We need to have our own "treigning lab". A true specialist who is an expert on weight management, bulking/cutting, and has it down to a science. When you take the guesswork out of making weight, I'm sure that's just one less stressor on the mind of PSU athletes.
Here is an example of their sales pitch - it's a picture of Cassar at 240 lbs and a pic of Cassar making weight at 206 lbs for MMA side by side.
"A solid 240 lbs of rock hard muscle down to a lean, mean fighting machine. @ant_thechamp_cassar made weight at 206 lbs for his pro MMA debut without missing a beat. Or a meal.
-Weight management is what we do!
-Bulk or cut - we run the numbers and take the guesswork out of weight management!
-You do your part; we'll do ours!
-We call it Success through Science!
-Because numbers don't lie!"
So get Mr. Flexibility Maestro, and Mr. Treigning Lab or someone like him both on the payroll. Please and thank you
