DeVries NOT a candidate for Iowa job. Ben McCollum the next Iowa Head Coach?

I think the longer this goes on, the odds increase that it will be McCollum. (Because of Drake still playing). I also think that around 90% of the time when there is a coaching search, the hire is someone who was hardly or never mentioned.

Why do some of you think it would be a disaster if it is not DD or McCollum? Out of all the potential candidates, these are the only 2 acceptable ones?

Jesus, the complaint is usually "why not cast a wider net?"
Well hopefully BG has casted a wider net before narrowing it down, but she is driving this bus not fans.

Yep, think all this inside information from people close to the situation were not that close.
Supposedly it was a done deal yesterday with DD. Now it may still be but.... who really knows on this board.
The world is just going to shit. I don't want to live in a world where I can't trust anonymous internet message board poster's "insider" information :)

It looked like it was a done deal yesterday, but something happened over the last 24 hours that moved the needle away from DD. He still might end up at Iowa, but it looks like Beth pivoted to McCollum for whatever reason. I’m not sold on the idea DD ends up at Indiana. He may simply stay at WV.

will be interesting to see if WVU comes up with a better package (at least a good enough package)

True, but in previous coaching searches to replace Davis, Alford, or Lickliter, I'm not sure there were good options with Iowa Tues available. Agree with your sentiment that there more than two possible candidates, though.

Sometime in the last couple of days, I argued that if you're the AD, you can't get distracted by sticker-shock, and that it's more important to hire the right guy.

But at $7M a year? That is perhaps a bridge too far.

Just a guess, but it seems like Iowa and IU might have had a bidding war, and Iowa stepped away from the table.

It does give me some joy to think that Iowa might have run up the price Indiana would have to pay for DeVries, just so we could turn around and hire the guy many wanted more anyway, and at a bargain price. Beth Goetz might be a witch, lol.
Let’s give credit when credit is due……this saga still has to play itself out…..and it will be a year or two before the results can be accurately evaluated. I just hope 1) UIowa hires the right person for the job and 2) I will be around a few years to enjoy the “new hire”……

The IU job is a bit of a curse at the moment. It’s Nebraska football with mediocre results over the past 30 years but delusions of still being a top program. Don’t think Mark Cuban and NIL will change that.
IU basketball is more like UM football.

It's all about the right coach.

I don't think a right coach exists that can turn Nebraska back to what they were in the early 90s, running the option in the big8 with violent crimimals on track scholarships.

How many of those were at the D1 level again where recruiting matters a ton???? Not just bringing you guys with you from your prev school?
You didn’t answer my question? How the hell did he win 4 nattys and 13 conference titles without knowing how to recruit? You don’t just luck into a natty at any level…much less 4 of them. How did Bo Ryan know how to recruit winning titles at D-III schools before kicking ass at Wisc? How did Bruce Pearl know how to recruit doing the same thing? The list goes on. Winners know how to win….and part of that is knowing how to recruit.

any worries about his recruiting skills?

can he reel Pryce back in, too?
Recruiting is relative….you recruit for what your “needs” are and skill level demand….Obviously McCollom’s resume speaks volumes……No he didn’t have D-1 talent at NW Mizzery but he did win national championships as coach there…..One would have to assume that at a D-1 school he would recruit effectively….Always remember Lute’s story about recruiting Ronnie Lester…..he was one of the “easiest” recruits he ever made, as no other D1 schools knew who he was…..kind of ther Kirk Ferentz mindset…..

all we know for sure is that DD is looking around and listening to offers; otherwise, he'd make a statement saying the rumors are just that and he'll be returning to WVU next season. Sucks to be a WVU fan right now....

Yeah if we were going to snatch a guy from a program I’d much rather it be one I can’t stand. I have no feelings either way about WVU.

Indiana board saying it’s not 100% with DeVries and that they’re waiting to hear back from another candidate and adds if it’s DeVries you’ll know in the next 24-48 hours

Fran was a tireless recruiter. He had a good eye for talent in young prospects. He got on great guys like Tyler ulis early among many others.
In the end we were bridesmaids cuz he played clean and eschewed street agents.
Then NIL came in and he simply could not compete.
Can BM or anyone overcome that obstacle?
Coaching is important but still gotta have the Jimmys and Joes to compete in top tier.

One thing that has become apparent...the dirty recruiters in past are now flourishing as anything goes:
Pitino
Pearl
Cal
Wade
Sampson
Miller
All have been banished but are now back and are very comfortable in the new era.
We need to consider them.

Every once in a while Fran, you say something that makes me…….think…..
That would be very unfair to McCollom and Drake….and the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament. That needs to be the story…….it doesn’t need to turn into a Donald Trump press conference…….pardon the analogy. But then I am sure “the media” will go for the low hangin’ fruit…..because they are weak.

Yep, who really knows besides DD. He could be leaning to Indiana now and tomorrow WV. It is kind of entertaining. Whoever we get then the fun begins

What?? Fran couldn't compete bc his defense and rebounding philosophy was dog shit ...and he could never get good enough guard play
